Authentic, delicious food
By Samer S. Sadek
Having grown up in Egypt, I had no idea what I took for granted. Delicious stuffed tomatoes, fresh lemony salads, vine leaves, meat stews. It's such a pleasure to find a book that allows me to recreate these meals I had back at home. It's easy to follow and the ingredients are readily available here in the States. I recommend this book for everyone.

Are we talking about the same cookbook?

When even rice pudding doesnt turn out right, after following the directions to the letter....you can safely say that a cookbook was poorly written.

Simply dissolve sugar in milk, then add rice and simmer on low for 15-20 minutes? Hardly. I started out with a low flame....and was still waiting for the rice to soften 45 minutes later. I made rice pudding out of the Good Housekeeping Cookbook, and I'd much sooner make rice pudding their way----you start out with a boil (to cook the inner core of the grain of rice), and THEN reduce to low and simmer. Works every time.

Ms. Abdennour should also mention to the novice, that it is necessary to stir the rice pudding continuously, or it will stick to the pan and BURN. However the word "stir" was not even mentioned in the recipe! This may seem like common sense to most, but cookbooks should be written at the level of a novice.

The rice in my pudding ended up having a hard, uncooked center. And when I went to taste it (aside from the bitterly hard rice) I felt there was way too much sugar.

In addition the cookbook has a strange format...the pages are numbered but the recipes are indexed not by page number but by recipe number (they are actually numbered from 1 on up) I much prefer good old fashioned page numbers---whats wrong with that?

Also, the author seems to be unfamiliar with the names of certain items in the West. When a recipe calls for "gullash" this corresponds to our "phyllo dough" however the author seems to not know that we have a word for this....so she describes it as "fresh, paper thin sheets of dough at your local bakery"....gee thanks, that would help the novice cook! I know that she is describing phyllo dough, but would a novice know?

In addition, I made kuftat ras al asfur. Again, following the instructions to the letter resulted in a bland tomato sauce.

Some recipe instructions amounted to no more than four sentences, when surely they are a bit more complex to make and worth describing in a bit more detail.

There are better Arabic cookbooks out there...I just haven't found them yet. This cookbook is suited to someone who is familiar with making these dishes....maybe then they can fill in the details which Abdennour fails to mention. But then one wonders, why would these people need a cookbook in the first place?

Don't think this is a second cookbook by the same author!

Well... first of all DO NOT click on the link to "buy these books together" (referriing to the amazon offer to buy this book and her other book "Egyptian Cooking, a practical guide") as this book contains ALL the recipes in the first edition, along with additional recipes. You will be WASTING your money as i did (I gave the first edition away, no need to keep it, for me I bought them years apart, for you it will be money down the drain or a headache with the return) Amazon should NOT be offering them together.

Being that this book basically consists of the other book and then some, I will go over in a nutshell the comments i made of the other as they also apply here.

Its good for the basics if you're already familiar with the cuisine. The arabic/english spice translations are helpful. Her instructions are thoroughly lacking, so if you are not an experienced cook, or are not familiar with egyptian/middle eastern cooking, you might have a hard time with the recipes as they would have benefited from a little more description. (for more on that see my review of the other book) They are written in a very matter of fact way, just mix, shape, saute..... They don't really sound very appealing. The recipe numbers not corresponding to page numbers is annoying but you get used to i (the recipes are numbered, page 1 might have recipes 1-3, page 2 recipes 4-6, page 3 recipes 7 and 8, and the index refers to the recipe number, not page number so the recipe for falafel could be recipe 6 which would be on page 2), as well as the fact that to make a recipe containing tomato sauce, you've got to refer to the tomato sauce recipe on another page (consisting of tomato sauce, salt and pepper).

The additional recipes are not egyptian and are really not of any value to me as there are tons of other middle eastern recipe books out there that are FAR better than this one.

The only reason I would recommend this book at all is that it is specifically Egyptian, and if you are even reading this review it probably means you want an Egyptian cookbook (rather than a generic Middle eastern cookbook.) If that is the case, then i would consider going with "My Egyptian Grandmother's Kitchen" by Magda Mehdawy, as she has pictures with all her recipes and at least that gets your taste buds going (oh, yeah that was also a problem with Abdennour's books, you could read the whole thing and not be all that impressed by anything). I would pair that with either Claudia Roden's The New Book of Middle Eastern Food (Five Star) or Mary Bsisu's The Arab Table (Also 5 Stars). When you want to cook something, first try to find it in one of the latter books, if you can, read the recipe, then refer to Mehdawy's book and see the Egyptian take on it. Of course Roden and Bsisu books are not going to have all the Egyptian recipes that Abdennour's has, but you will see the difference in the instructions immediately.

I rated the first edition 3 stars because at the time I reviewed I couldn't find other egyptian cookbooks, Abdennour had the whole market. With Mehdaway's cookbook, (and another Egyptian one that i just spotted but havent bought yet, Abdennour has lost the sole claim on the Egyptian cookbook market, thus this second edition isn't as valuable or necessary. So i am rating it 2 stars.

In this fast-moving world, no greater challenge exists--in both our personal and professional lives--than organizing and managing our time. Now Julie Morgenstern, whose bestselling Organizing from the Inside Out has become the new standard in this category, explains how to meet and conquer the time challenge once and for all. Morgenstern's groundbreaking "from-the-inside-out" approach helps readers uncover their own psychological stumbling blocks and strengths, and develop a time-management system that suits their individual needs.

As Francis Willet, founder and CFO of Day Runner, says, "Morgenstern shows us how to look inside at our own habits and style to create a plan that works, and have fun doing it."

Amazon.com Review
In Organizing from the Inside Out, author Julie Morgenstern used three main strategies to whip a living space or office into shape: "analyze, strategize, attack." Using the same system, Morgenstern now shows readers how to get rid of chaotic schedules in order to live more comfortable and productive lives. Morgenstern likens a cluttered schedule to a cluttered closet. For example, a closet is typically "crammed with more stuff than storage," and a schedule is typically "crammed with more tasks than time."

Those who fear "time management" because they worry about living uncreative or overly scheduled lives will find themselves reassured by Morgenstern's ability to customize her system. The most important thing readers must do, she emphasizes, is to create a time management system that fits one's personal style--whether it be spontaneous and easily distracted or highly regimented and efficient. "Just as everyone's living room looks different, reflecting the individual's or family's values and priorities, everyone's time management system will look different, reflecting what's important to him or her," she explains. Fortunately, readers can easily customize her excellent advice while learning how to create a personal time map, streamline routine tasks, conquer procrastination and chronic lateness, and manage all the inevitable crises and distractions of daily life. Speaking of procrastination, what better time than now to try this book out--ridding yourself of all that draining clutter so you can get on with living the life you want? --Gail Hudson

From Publishers Weekly
Best-selling author of Organizing from the Inside Out, Morgenstern takes a similarly practical approach to time. If one thinks of time has having "edges" (rather than being amorphous), she explains, then it becomes as finite as spaceDand, consequently, just as manageable. Morgenstern believes that there are three primary reasons why people have difficulty managing time: "technical errors" (miscalculating the length of a task); "external realities" (new baby, new job) and "psychological obstacles" (perfectionism). What makes her program work, she attests, is that instead of trying to change people's natural behaviors and preferences, she encourages them to expand upon whatever is working already, no matter how overwhelmed they may feel. It all starts with knowing what one's big picture values and goals are (e.g., maintaining a happy marriage, excelling at one's career) and prioritizing those with the help of an ingenious device she's created called a "Time Map." Then, Morgenstern helps the reader apply her "SPACE" system ("sort, purge, assign a 'home,' containerize and equalize")Dthe nitty-gritty of time managementDto align one's to-do list with the Time Map. Everything one does (from important phone calls to major projects) must have its time and placeDeven relaxation and fun ("There is no such thing as spare time"). Morgenstern's simple book presents a superb, sound program for "creating a life that nurtures you and makes you feel good." (Sept.)

I got bogged down and couldn't find time to finish the book
By Anthony Louis
This seems like it would be a good book for those with problems managing their time. I started to read it and got distracted and then just couldn't find time to finish. Maybe I need a book on time management to get through this one.

Morphed me from scattered adult into effective student
By Milli Thornton
The Monday after Thanksgiving I set out on a new career adventure. To partake of the training I need for this new career, I'm studying my new trade by correspondence course (the old-fashioned kind where you receive lessons in the mail). The course will go for six months, so I'll need to be self-motivated to get through all the material, learn the underlying wisdom and techniques, and complete the exercises.

Fortunately, I found Ms. Morgenstern's book during a visit to my local library. This came at the perfect moment for me and I began incorporating 30-minute sessions with Julie's book into my daily study periods.

With the help of Time Mapping, I've used the book to structure (and make ongoing adjustments to) my study goals. With the help of chapters such as Sort, Containerize, and Purge, I've become better at focusing my time to get through my to-do list and thus make better use of my leisure time.

I *feel* better about how much time I have, even though I've just added a big commitment in the form of 22 hours of study per week. I've been able to schedule realistic time slots for my other tasks as well as plenty of down-time. It's amazing how this book has helped me expand my concept of available time.

Using the visual aids in the book, and also researching more options online, I've finally chosen a planner that really works for me. This was a liberating step as I had not even realized I'd chosen a planner that wasn't right for me. I'd been subconsciously blaming myself for not making proper use of my old planner, but Julie's book helped me see through that defeatist thinking and find the solution. She works that magic in other areas also, helping demystify foggy habits such as procrastination and chronic lateness.

[Incidentally, since you're considering tools for better use of time, you might enjoy a little tip on planners that I stumbled across. While searching for your perfect planner (or, as I am, while getting through the final weeks of a waning year), you can supplement by using At-A-Glance QuickNotes Daily Planner. It comes as a tear-off pad with undated pages (you fill in the dates yourself) and each page has hole punches for optional storage in a ring binder. The cost is approx. five bucks for a pad of 50 sheets - which makes it an affordable way to experiment. It's a great way to practice structuring your day in a large format where you can spread out and really go ballistic.]

I've checked TIME MANAGEMENT FROM THE INSIDE OUT out of the library twice in a row so I could finish it. I now plan to buy my own copy from Amazon so I can go back over it and highlight the methods I didn't quite incorporate the first time around.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I had not already read Morgenstern's book ORGANIZING FROM THE INSIDE OUT, so I did not find the material repetitious. I found it inspiring and very helpful. I would go as far as saying this book has changed my life. Time eating me alive has always been one of my biggest issues. Time now feels like less of a taskmaster and more of a personal tool.

I can't wait to see how I feel about time (and my accomplishments) once I've been practicing my new schedule for six months or longer.

P.S. I just found out there's a second edition, so I'll probably buy that one to get the updated features.

Another Victory for Ms. Morgenstern
By A Customer
Ms. Morgenstern's first book, Organizing from the Inside Out, was tremendously helpful because of its ease with which I could apply the principles to my life. Her kindergarten model of organizing space -- to create activity zones -- totally resonated with me the first time I read OFIO, and her use of it again in relation to time management is so great!
She advocates a goal-oriented approach to scheduling time and actually helps her readers think through their goals. In the second part of the book, which I found particularly helpful, she brings the kindergarten model back and applies it to mapping out time. Morgenstern also provides specific instructions about how to zone your own calendar so that you can make really effective and informed decisions about your time.
The most appealing part of Morgenstern's approach -- and the part that separates her from other self-help authors -- is that she never IMPOSES anything on her readers; rather, she teaches us _how_ to discover what's going to work in our own lives. She gave me freedom to figure out what was going to work for me, rather than making me learn a new, complicated system to impose on myself.

About the Author
Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani is the world leader of the most distinguished Naqshbandi order of Sufis. Shaykh Nazim is both a scholar of the Divine Law, being the mufti of Turkish Cyprus, as well s the Shaykh of the Way (tariqah).

A resident of Turkish Cyprus, he was born in Larnaca, Cyprus on April 23, 1922. He is a descendant of the family of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and the mercy of God be upon him, on both his mother and his father's side, being both a Hasani and Husayni Sayyid. On his father's side, he is a descendant of Sayyid Abdul Qadir Gilani, the founder of the Qadiri Sufi order and n his mother's side, his ancestry comes from Jalal al-Din Rumi, the founder of the Mawlawi Sufi order.

Shaykh Nazim finished high school in Cyprus in 1940. He then traveled to Istanbul for higher education. He studied at the University of Istanbul, completing an MA in Chemical Engineering. During his years in Istanbul, he also completed the requirements of the Divine Law and Arabic language. He received his permission from Shaykh Jamal al-Lassuni. Shaykh Nazim then directed his attention to the study of the spiritual path of seven Sufi orders: Naqshbandi, Chishti, Qadiri, Mawlawi, Rifai, Shadhili and Badawi. He then increased his study of the Naqshbandi order under his shaykh at that time, Sulayman Arzurumi. After a few years. Shaykh Sulayman told him, O my son, the one who is carrying your secrets is not me, but my spiritual teacher who migrated from Daghistan to Turkey and who is now residing in Damascus in the Median district. He is known as the Master of the Golden Chain of the Naqshbandi order in our time.

Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani then moved to Syria. On the way to Damascus, he first visited Aleppo, Hama and Homs. In Homs, under the direction of his Shaykh, stayed for one year in seclusion in the mosque and tomb of the famous Companion of the Prophet, Khalid ibn Walid. There he received more intensive instruction in the Divine Law, the Traditions and the Science of the Quran under the Shaykhs Muhammad Ali Uyun as-Suud, Abdul Aziz Uyun as-Suud, mufti of Homs, Abdul Jalil Murad and Sayyid as-Subai, who are all Naqshbandi shaykhs as well as famous scholars of the Traditions and religious scholars of the Divine Law.

In 1944 he moved to Tripoli, Lebanon, where he was the guest of Shaykh Munir al-Malik, the mufti of northern Lebanon and Shaykh of the Qadir, Rifai and Naqshbandi Sufi orders. In 1945 he went from Tripoli to Damascus to Hai al-Midan where he finally met Shaykh Abdullah ad-Daghistan an-Naqshbandi. He stayed with his Grand Shaykh until his Grand Shaykh passed away on October 4, 1973. During that period of almost forty years, Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani continued to receive the heavenly foundation of spiritual knowledge which poured forth from the heart of Shaykh Abdullah ad-Daghistani into his heart.

Shaykh Nazim continuously traveled to the Middle East and Turkey during these 40 years. Upon the death of his Grand Shaykh and by his spiritual order, he enlarged his scope of travel to include Europe, America and the Far East. He established hundreds of centers all over the world, spreading Islam together with Sufi spiritual knowledge which has brought hundreds of thousands of converts to Islam. It would not be an exaggeration to say that he is the mujaddid of this century as was Sayyid Abdul Qadir Gilani, in his time; Shah Bahaudin Naqshband, in his time; Sayyid Ahmad al-Faruqi, in his time; and Jalal al-Din Rumi, in his time.

Shaykh Nazim carries the secret of seven Sufi orders: Naqshband, Chishti, Qadiri, Mawlana, Rifai, Shadhili and Badawi, through a chain of authorization from his master, Shaykh Abdullah ad-Daghistani, through the chain of 39 Grand Shaykhs linking him to the Prophet.

He has entered many seclusions during his lifetime ranging in duration from 40 days

Deep Mystical Awakening
By Z. Ali
After carefully reading this book, one would actually expect only positive reviews coming from Christians and Muslims alike. This is supposed to be a Sufi text from a Grand Master of one of the most well known Sufi Ways. So understandably, the Sufi views of Prophets, God, Apocalypse etc are presented. Islamic and Sufi belief is that Jesus (Peace be Upon Him) wasn't crucified but God in His infinite Mercy and Love took him up to the heavens. And that he is supposed to return at the end of the world (which will come soon according to the book) to rule over the believers in a Golden Age lasting 40 years! Sure there are differences of texts and interpretations, but a real lover of Jesus (like myself) must not be offended by this!

The Bible itself contains directives of war and killing in the way of God (Deuteronomy 20:13-14), which proves that earlier Prophets did fight.

But to be fair, the book is not even concerned with these issues! It is actually an informal account of a conversation between some Hindu and Yogy (believe it or not) mystics and the Sufi Grandmaster deep in the beatiful Alps monutains in Switzerland, about the coming war between good and evil. I found the descriptions to be strikingly similar to Biblical ones. Moreover, the prophecy says that "Believers" (who may belong to any religion) will survive Armageddon and not necessarily those who are Muslims by name! In fact the audience in the book were entirely non-Muslim and they were given tremendous glad-tidings and hope of a Golden-Age promised to the "Believers"!

The book contains pearls of wisdom and it calls for a prejudice-free mind to collect them. Let's shed our misgivings and reap the harvest of true friends of God!

A Spiritual Oasis In the Desert of Confusion

Despite the advances in technology and science, the collective knowledge of the 21st century seems to shed little light to what makes us humans genuinely happy. Nonsense
By Alyssa A. Lappen
According to this view of the world, while Moses and Jesus told their followers not to kill, Mohammed had the right to kill "because he is perfect." (p. 54)

Presumably, the followers of Mohammed may also kill because their way, and specifically the Sufi way, encompasses all religions and is the one true way. This of course is a fallacy, since the Sufi way does not teach "do not kill."

The book also teaches that Jesus did not die on the cross; Judas died in his place. Evil was crucified, not Jesus Christ (p. 86)

The Islamic apocalyptic vision is also presented here. Believers will live, and all others will die.

I am not a Christian. Regardless.

If this is Sufi teaching, it does not encompass my faith, and I imagine that any thinking Christian would agree, though for different reasons.

I see no solutions to the world's problems here.

The Permaculture City: Regenerative Design for Urban, Suburban, and Town Resilience, by Toby Hemenway

Permaculture is more than just the latest buzzword; it offers positive solutions for many of the environmental and social challenges confronting us. And nowhere are those remedies more needed and desired than in our cities. The Permaculture City provides a new way of thinking about urban living, with practical examples for creating abundant food, energy security, close-knit communities, local and meaningful livelihoods, and sustainable policies in our cities and towns. The same nature-based approach that works so beautifully for growing food―connecting the pieces of the landscape together in harmonious ways―applies perfectly to many of our other needs. Toby Hemenway, one of the leading practitioners and teachers of permaculture design, illuminates a new way forward through examples of edge-pushing innovations, along with a deeply holistic conceptual framework for our cities, towns, and suburbs.

The Permaculture City begins in the garden but takes what we have learned there and applies it to a much broader range of human experience; we’re not just gardening plants but people, neighborhoods, and even cultures. Hemenway lays out how permaculture design can help towndwellers solve the challenges of meeting our needs for food, water, shelter, energy, community, and livelihood in sustainable, resilient ways. Readers will find new information on designing the urban home garden and strategies for gardening in community, rethinking our water and energy systems, learning the difference between a “job” and a “livelihood,” and the importance of placemaking and an empowered community.

This important book documents the rise of a new sophistication, depth, and diversity in the approaches and thinking of permaculture designers and practitioners. Understanding nature can do more than improve how we grow, make, or consume things; it can also teach us how to cooperate, make decisions, and arrive at good solutions.

Review

Booklist-

"For the past six years, Hemenway’s acclaimed first book, Gaia’s Garden (2009), has been the world’s best-selling guidebook on home and garden permaculture. He now continues to champion this environmental philosophy that involves working with nature, instead of against it, for maximum sustainability. Although permaculture practices originally began with small-scale farms and gardens in mind, in his latest work Hemenway presents a much larger vision of applying them to metropolitan settings. In what is more than simply a handbook on finding space to grow fruits and vegetables in the concrete jungle, the author demonstrates just how widely the permaculture net can be cast by including advice on sustainably managing critical urban resources such as water, shelter, electricity, and even community centers. After introductory chapters on permaculture principles and the history and evolution of cities, Hemenway covers the basics of designing urban home gardens before moving on to discuss “water wisdom” and home energy solutions. An invaluable resource for city planners and dwellers alike, as well as an optimistic exploration of the possibilities for ecological well-being in our future urban landscapes.”

Library Journal-

"Permaculture refers to a method of agricultural design that uses natural approaches. While several chapters address the unique challenges and opportunities in creating an urban garden, Hemenway refers often to his first book, Gaia’s Garden, the initial major volume published in North America on permaculture principles, for further detail. Here, the author’s focus narrows to an urban setting, where permaculture means more than having a sustainable garden but can generate powerful change and community growth. Combining anecdotal stories of local U.S. neighborhoods practicing permaculture principles with black-and-white and color photos, Hemenway describes ways in which urban dwellers can not only create their own backyard oasis but join with their neighbors to build shared spaces in which to produce food, culture, and identity. Valuable tips on water conservation via rain harvesting and graywater collection mingle with advice on reducing energy consumption, producing local energy resources, and decreasing your foodshed and carbon footprints. Notes and index provide a reliable reference for further reading. VERDICT: An enlightening read for anyone interested in green gardening, environmental ethics, social justice issues, and seeking positive community change.”

Publishers Weekly-

"This eagerly awaited book from West Coast permaculture expert Hemenway, author of the classic Gaia's Garden, pushes permaculture design beyond its usual realm of homesteading and gardening, applying it to the complex systems that make up contemporary urban life. Other permaculturalists are also exploring these ideas, but Hemenway's intelligent, down-to-earth analyses, astute systems thinking, and clear organization offer a particularly comprehensive, open-ended, and sophisticated yet understandable overview to readers who want to discover, evaluate, utilize, and integrate the untapped resources abundant in any city or town. Hemenway focuses on the philosophical, ‘whetting appetites' and providing toolkits rather than in-depth instruction, with the goal of teaching readers 'to become adept at a whole-systems approach to living in and finding solutions in cities, towns, and suburbs.' Referencing livable-city innovators such as Jane Jacobs and human-scale design thinkers such as Christopher Alexander, Hemenway shows how permaculture concepts can be stretched and rethought in an urban setting to include not just one's house, garden, and yard but also neighbors, parks, and city agencies.”

"Many people who are searching for a more fulfilling life, wanting to reduce their ecological footprint and build resilience for uncertain futures, grasp that permaculture might be part of the solution but are often unsure how it applies to their particular situation. For residents of towns and cities in the modern affluent world, The Permaculture City shows how permaculture design makes common sense."--David Holmgren, co-originator of the Permaculture concept

"Toby Hemenway’s Gaia’s Garden is the go-to book I always recommend for those interested in permaculture. His new book, The Permaculture City, is the much-needed urban version, a great introduction and full of important information on adapting permaculture to an urban environment."--Starhawk, permaculture designer and author of The Empowerment Manual

“The Permaculture City is a triumph in bringing the wisdom of permaculture practices to city dwellers. This book is a ‘bridge book’ for greening our urban landscapes. Rich in practical knowledge, Toby Hemenway is a trailblazer in demystifying the art of living sustainably within ecosystems: teaching how YOU can be a collaborative partner in a healthy urban biosphere. This book’s impact will be increasingly significant as we inevitably march toward living in built environments. For urban planners, architects, green builders, and simply citizens who want to enjoy a higher quality of life, The Permaculture City is The Book to lead the way.”--Paul Stamets, author of Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World

“Permaculture is applied ecology, and its practice is evolving as society becomes more urbanized. As Toby Hemenway puts it, ‘We’re not just gardening plants but people, neighborhoods, and even cultures.’ Whether you’re new to permaculture or a seasoned ‘permie,’ The Permaculture City is essential: it captures the explorative state of the art in readable, often delightful prose. And, like all good permaculture books, it is eminently helpful at solving a myriad of practical problems in the home and garden.”--Richard Heinberg, Senior Fellow, Post Carbon Institute

“Toby Hemenway combines the skill of a storyteller with the vigour of experience and insight. He shows us an urban landscape with gardens, food, energy systems, and architecture that can ensure genuine sustainability. Beyond these vital elements, he also creates a template for a new kind of city: a human scale collection of village communities where quality of life is valued above quantity of output. With the majority of the human race becoming city dwellers, this is vital information for a more collaborative, intelligent, and resilient urban landscape, one that will enable us to face serious challenges now, and in the future.”--Maddy Harland, co-founder and editor of Permaculture magazine and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts

"Toby Hemenway is among the true visionaries who can turn vision into practical action. The Permaculture City is a landmark book that will be used for decades as a compass and field guide to regenerate our world and communities. Toby depicts the virtuous circle people are already creating across the country and world, from small acts an individual can take, to larger systemic changes that only communities and societies can make. This is the gospel of building resilience from the ground up, and Toby is a true hero of our age―he shows us we’re all invited to the party.”--Kenny Ausubel, cofounder and CEO of Bioneers

“Half the world’s people now live in cities, and as Toby Hemenway convincingly demonstrates, they can be at the very forefront of the revolution in how we live. This book will thrill you!”--Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy

“I'm someone with a strong bias towards country living and I've always thought that the phrase 'urban permaculture' is oxymoronic. I've often thought master planners should be working to revive small towns, not build more cities. Toby Hemenway has shown me the error of my ways. The function of a well-conceived city, he says, is to inspire. His book inspires.”--Albert Bates, president, Global Village Institute for Appropriate Technology

"We stand at a crossroads where long-held societal beliefs are shattered and assumptions fall before knowledge and reality. Human civilization is in the balance. Few people have grasped the significance of the moment in the way that Toby Hemenway has. His voice is particularly important at this time. The Permaculture City is his attempt to understand what we are confronted with and to skew the discussion toward sustainability. There is no doubt that his message is timely and relevant. Read this book like the life of your children depended on it … because it does.”--John D. Liu, director of the Environmental Education Media Project and visiting fellow at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology

"What a great, accessible, and timely book! The Permaculture City is a must-read for anyone who loves where they live, wishes to deepen their relationship and pleasure in and with it, and realizes that our food, water, and community resilience may depend upon it. Toby Hemenway offers great guidance for applying the lens of intentional design to increasing food self-reliance (and pleasure!), improving water efficiency and usage, and growing community, three elements that promise to improve the quality of relatedness to place as well as resilience in the face of weather and other uncertainties.

"Whether the topic is gardening in a window box or creating a community garden, catching and channeling rainwater, or redesigning an edible landscape around a suburban home, this timely book offers everyone a window into the joy and longterm fulfillment of permaculture."--Nina Simons, co-founder of Bioneers and founder of Everywoman’s Leadership

About the Author

Toby Hemenway is the author of the first major North American book on permaculture, Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture. After obtaining a degree in biology from Tufts University, Toby worked for many years as a researcher in genetics and immunology, first in academic laboratories at Harvard and the University of Washington in Seattle, and then at Immunex, a major medical biotech company. At about the time he was growing dissatisfied with the direction biotechnology was taking, he discovered permaculture, a design approach based on ecological principles that creates sustainable landscapes, homes, and workplaces. A career change followed, and Toby and his wife spent ten years creating a rural permaculture site in southern Oregon. He was associate editor of Permaculture Activist, a journal of ecological design and sustainable culture, from 1999 to 2004. He teaches permaculture and consults and lectures on ecological design throughout the country. His writing has appeared in magazines such as Whole Earth Review, Natural Home, and Kitchen Gardener. He is available for workshops, lectures, and consulting in ecological design.

He lives in Sebastopol, California.

Serious Permaculture Knowledge for the Urban & Suburban Greenie
By Haven Maven
(Disclosure: this review was previously posted on Examiner.com)

When Toby Hemenway and his wife moved to the country to live a bucolic life in a sustainable, environmental way, what he learned was quite the opposite of being more environmentally sound.

In fact, their ecological footprint turned out to be far larger than if they lived in the city. They needed a car to go anywhere, services and stores were beyond walking distance miles away, and their social lives were severely limited. When Hemenway added up the impact of his country lifestyle, he had to admit there was a better way to live a greener life – move back to an urban area, and later, write a book about it. The Permaculture City: Regenerative Design for Urban, Suburban, and Town Resilience is that book.

The Permaculture City integrates the concepts and practices of permaculture within an urban setting. Granted, the city is often the last place one thinks of as environmental, but Hemenway says,

“The human-nature bond can be lost in cities if we're not careful, and I think we go somewhat insane without it. Cities can help keep their surrounding regions both ecologically and economically healthy by fostering connections that are intended to do that, rather than ignore or simply exploit their surroundings.”

According to Hemenway, a truly healthy city incorporates a diversity of offerings that address the physical, social, and emotional needs of the dweller; his book bridges the gap between city and country, and is rich in the history of how our current urban models came about, where they went wrong, and how they can be changed and improved.

Hemenway’s strength is his ability to overlay historical fact to bring greater clarity to the current problems plaguing the modern urban space. From the very first chapter, he walks the reader through the life cycle of cities and their evolution in response to social change; this gives the reader a clearer perspective on the “why” and “how” behind the transportation and social dynamics of urban environments. His book is chock full of examples and explanations that illustrate each chapter’s purpose, often going beyond the basic details so the reader has no choice but to understand what Hemenway is so passionately writing about.

The social capital, or the human interactive value, of urban areas is a strong focal point of the book. Hemenway highlights the ideas of Jane Jacobs, William Whyte, and Kevin Lynch, individuals who strove to integrate and not isolate the elements that comprise a well-rounded city, while weaving permacultural aspects throughout. His suggestions truly honor Jacobs’ “village in the city” concept that the most vibrant ecosystem in the urban environment is the human one. When asked about the motivating factors behind writing The Permaculture City, Hemenway stated:

“the most interesting work in permaculture, to me, was being done in cities…growing food is easy compared to learning how to work with other people constructively.”

But Hemenway includes that toolset as well; chapters 3 and 4 of the book are essentially a permaculture design course (PDC), covering the basics from designing a small backyard garden space to implementing energy efficient changes that can save money and improve one’s quality of life. Hemenway offers intense, effective environmental options for the urban homeowner, with everything scaled down to individual lot size.

The integration of urban areas with the surrounding bioregion is also highlighted. Ancient civilizations integrated their services and fuel production, transport and defensibility into a cohesive whole that enabled them to have resilience and stability, even in times of war and famine; Hemenway discusses how that ancient wisdom can be applied to our modern cities, which are often geometric with little to no thought about how the human experience integrates into the model. City dwellers would have a considerably different user experience if land developers and city planners had copies of The Permaculture City as mandatory reading. What determines whether a city is successful in being an overall great place to live often does not come down to cost; it comes down to a design the meets human needs and builds social capital.

This is not Hemenway’s first book rodeo; he’s a well-known heavy-hitter in the Permaculture world, and has a significant list of published material, such as Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture, and other works. His writing style is straightforward and clear, and The Permaculture City is not a coffee table picture book that trades information for eye candy. Hemenway has done his research, skillfully delineating the ways an individual can change their environmental impact even while living in a concrete jungle, and illustrates it all with strong visuals. In short, The Permaculture City: Regenerative Design for Urban, Suburban, and Town Resilienceis an excellent resource for anyone not living in the countryside but wants to do right by Mother Nature. Now you can get your green on, even in NYC.

Your culture not just your garden.
By Jefferson Coulter
This is a delightful book for both the avid permaculturist (or "Permie") or the person wanting to understand this natural design process. I've immediately applied principles from this book to my own home environment. I also highly appreciate Toby's description of permaculture in the social context, with examples. I used his approach to advocate for the inclusion of resiliency, leverage, and feedback in informing how legal services are delivered in rural Washington. Permaculture is more than your garden; it's about systematic thinking. Toby communicates that brilliantly. This is a must read for project managers, executive directors, and managers.
