I'm the Best, by Lucy Cousins

A boastful dog gets a taste of his own medicine in a tale about friendship that features the bold, exuberant art of Lucy Cousins at its best.

"I win! I’m the best!" Dog boasts. He can run faster than Mole, dig better than Goose, swim faster than Donkey, and he’s much bigger than Ladybug. He wins! Unfortunately, Dog’s nonstop bragging is starting to make his friends feel kind of sad. But what if they mixed things up and looked at them differently? Could they teach Dog a lesson — and remind him of what it means to be a best friend?

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 1—Jaunty in rainbow-plaid pants, Dog discovers ways to compete with each of his friends. However, he quickly learns that although he swims better than Donkey, Goose is the best swimmer, and Donkey wins the height contest. Finally devastated by his inferiority and shamed by the shabby way he's treated his pals, the orange pup apologizes to Ladybug, Mole, Goose, and Donkey. During a group hug, they kindly assure him that he's the best at having "beautiful fluffy ears. And we love you." The story ends with Dog confident that his talent is the most important of all, so, in fact, he is still "the best." As always, Cousins invigorates her cartoons with color and charm. Her splotches and whirls convey depth and movement. The simply drawn characters have a comic flair and, like Ladybug in her tutu, beguile upon first glance. This well-told tale of competitive obsession belongs in all collections.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA

From Booklist
*Starred Review* High-spirited and self-centered, Dog competes with his four friends, one by one. He outruns Mole in a race, beats Goose in a digging contest, bests Ladybug in terms of size, and swims better than Donkey. Each time, he announces, “I win. I’m the best.” His friends feel sad until they realize that Mole’s the best digger, Duck’s the best swimmer, Donkey’s the biggest, and Ladybug can fly highest. Suddenly realizing that he has been “a silly SHOW-OFF” and mean to his friends, downcast Dog apologizes. After they reassure him that they value his friendship and admire his “beautiful fluffy ears,” his irrepressible bravado surges again. Dog’s simple, childlike narration moves the story forward while making the most of this distinctive character and his flip-flopping emotional state, from his thoughtless, heartless declarations of superiority to his glum realization that he has hurt his friends to his final exclamation about the supreme importance of fluffy ears. The book’s large format gives plenty of range for Cousins’ naive, expressive pencil-and-ink illustrations. From the exuberant text to the bold, colorful artwork, a joyous spirit pervades this picture book and its fallible yet lovable protagonist. Fine for reading aloud to preschoolers who suspect that they may be fallible yet hope that they are still lovable. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Carolyn Phelan

This one is the best!
By J.Prather
I love Lucy Cousins! Her books are always great for story time sharing because of the big bold pictures and her simple, beautiful stories. I'm the Best is all about a dog (in perfect rainbow plaid pants of course) who loves to brag. He is always telling his friends that he is better than they are at everything, not realizing that he is making them feel sad. The friends then tell him that they are the best at things too, and he finally understands how mean he has been. The friends forgive him and tell him they think he is the best too, and they share a nice hug. A great little story about the dangers of bragging and being a show off. But wait! You turn to the last page, and I'll be darn if that dog isn't up to his old bragging once again. Just when we thought he'd learned his lesson!

I know that final page is meant to be funny, but I wish the author had stopped with that last hug. The dog going back to his old habits just seems to take away from the message a bit. That was my only complaint about this really cute book. Ms. Cousins' illustrations are engaging and whimsical and I am once again amazed that she tells such a good story with so few words. A must have for any toddler or preschooler!

This shining tale of Dog, the critter who thought he was the best at everything, will make your youngster smile!
By Deb
Dog smiled and danced around in his multicolored checkered shorts practically shouting to the world, "Hello, I'm Dog, and I'm the best." Dog had four friends, Ladybug, Mole, Goose, and Donkey. He really loved his friends, but he still considered himself to be the best. He was better than they were in so many ways. He could run faster than Mole and grinned as he left him in the dust. As Goose looked on and tried to dig a hole with his webbed feet Dog dug like crazy and claimed he was much better at digging. They probably weren't happy when he boasted, "I win. I'm the best."

Of course he claimed he was larger than Ladybug, who was just a little thing. When Dog and Donkey went for a swim, his dog paddle was much better than Donkey's awkward swimming. Dog was such a braggart that he claimed, of course, that he was better than everyone at everything. Very soon all his friends were feeling very sad because Dog outshone them at every turn. All of a sudden things began to look different when Mole started to dig a hole and was better at it than Dog. Was Dog really the best at everything? Would his friends teach him a lesson he wouldn't forget?

This shining tale of Dog, the critter who thought he was the best at everything, will make your youngster smile. There is always one in the crowd who could benefit by learning a bit of humility. This book is a gentle reminder that such a quality can go a long way and will resonate with many children. Of course this tale is quite humorous in spite of its more serious message and the peppy, colorful artwork meshes perfectly with the story. This dynamic tale would be a fun one to read and discuss during circle or story time. If you are a Lucy Cousins fan, you know what being the best is all about!

Simply the best
By Madigan McGillicuddy
In this upbeat offering from Cousins, uber-competitive Dog is more than happy to inform his friends Ladybug, Mole, Goose and Donkey just who exactly is top dog. Dog can run faster than Mole, dig holes better than Goose, far outclasses Ladybug in terms of physical size, and can swim better than Donkey. Depressed at being outshone, Dog's friends all sit down to sulk until they realize that much like the game of rock-paper-scissors, they each have their own strengths: Mole can dig better than Dog, Goose can swim better, Donkey is the biggest of all of them, and Ladybug can fly, something that Dog can't do at all. Devastated, a weeping Dog realizes that he isn't the best after all and he tearily admits, "I'm mean to my friends." They reassure him that he has beautiful fluffy ears, which leaves Dog feeling like he's back on top again.

Clean backgrounds with plenty of white space makes the bold pencil-lined, bright watercolor illustrations really pop. Seeing the characters moods dip between glee, pride, dejection, disappointment and back again, with just a few simple lines is a testament to Cousin's skill as an illustrator. There's a child-like charm to the simple flowers, trees and sun that show up on a few of the pages. The inferred lesson of the book, about the perils of boasting, is delivered with a lot of humor and charm and never hits a didactic note. This funny story will suit children ages 2-5.

Arthur Brown Jr.: Progressive Classicist (Classical America Series in Art and Architecture), by Jeffrey T. Tilman

Arthur Brown Jr. (1874-1957) is one of the most important, yet underpublished, architects of the twentieth century.

Celebrated by his peers for such masterpieces as the City Hall, War Memorial Opera House, Temple Emanu-El, and Coit Tower in San Francisco; the Pasadena City Hall; and the Labor-ICC block of the Federal Triangle in Washington, DC, Brown epitomized the idea that architecture not only houses society’s daily rituals and defining events but also can itself shape the sociopolitical landscape of America. Arthur Brown Jr.: Progressive Classicist, the first full study of Brown within his architectural and social context, unifies the varied strands of the architect’s life, from the architectural forms and methods of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris to the reforming spirit and self-reliant confidence of San Francisco after the earthquake and fire of 1906 to the challenging economics and changing aesthetics of machine-age America. It details the development of Brown’s major works and many other civic, commercial, religious, academic, and residential buildings. It chronicles his unflagging commitment to the classical tradition, which he employed in contemporary, forward-looking institutional buildings that emphasized continuity with the past while meeting the needs of the future. To Brown, the classical tradition was not a sacrosanct, unchanging body of knowledge; it was an expanding and evolving set of ideas about architectural design that permitted, and even demanded, change as new conditions and technologies were developed. Arthur Brown Jr. is a fascinating look at the man-captivated by the classical movement and obsessed with the slightest architectural detail-and at his buildings, at once canonical and inventive and singularly American. 30 color 200 b/w photos

Thorough and excellent

This book is meticulously researched and organized. Anyone interested in Brown, history, architecture, classicism in America and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts should have this book nearby. I have been the US General Services Administration historic preservation representative for the Federal Triangle in Washington DC since 1998 and have turned repeatedly to Dr. Tilman's book since first published for information on the design and construction of the ICC/Connecting Wing/Labor complex, the influence of the atelier Laloux and Brown's other work in California. Dr. Tilman's research has proven even more productive than an extensive Historic Structures Report for this complex completed in 1988. Hats off to Dr. Tilman!

The penultimate biography of Arthur Brown, Jr.
By David Arbogast
Had Arthur Brown practiced architecture in New York CIty we would have seen many more biographies of him and his work by now. As it was, he chose to practice in his beloved San Francisio, bringing to it works of Classical grandeur such as the City Hall complex. He developed a nation-wide reputation in twentieth-century Classical architecture which, sadly, was eclipsed by the Modernists of the late twentieth century. Fortunately we now have this superlative monograph on him and his works. It is quite thorough, with a clear and lucid text accompanied with wonderful illustrations. Despite its relatively high price, the book is highly recommended for those with an interest in Classical architecture as practiced in the twentieth century outside of its center in New York City.

BEAUX ART MASTER
By Shannon Deason
I have alway's thought the San Francisco City Hall was spectacular, as impressive inside as out. It is great to have a book on the architect of that building and many more, his buildings in the Federal Triangle are wonderful, classic, yet functional. This book has fantastic images and the text is fascinating. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in spectacular architecture in the classical style.

A perfect 10!
By Paganni's Ghost
Despite all the "negativity" surrounding Donald Trump and the Mexican race, I still believe he is a legend. This book is filled with some of his most memorable quotes and comments. Many, including me, have used them as words of inspiration and empowerment -- giving people the motivation to succeed in everything they do -- and never giving up. One of my favorite quotes from him is: "Sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war." I highly recommend this book, especially to college students. This great read is guaranteed to help you find yourself -- the inner successful "you."

She Knew What She Needed to Do...She Just Couldn’t Lisa felt that she should know better than to hate herself for being fat. As a professor of women’s studies she knew she should love herself just as she is was - all 420 pounds of herself. But the truth was, she couldn’t manage to love herself, try as she might. And even after lap band surgery, she still suffered from binge eating disorder.

In Lisa’s words, she could eat “two whole pizzas, three Entenmann’s cakes, and a two-liter bottle of soda in a three hour binge” all to punish herself for existing. Something Had to Change!! Lisa’s second lap band weight loss surgery had failed over a decade earlier. But she was too poor and too defeated to attempt a third. But after more than ten years of suffering daily binges, unbearable feelings, abusive relationships, and failing physical health, she knew she couldn’t continue as she had been. In 2006 she underwent gastric bypass surgery and began the long and difficult journey to health and happiness for the first time in her life. The Gastric Bypass Surgery Was Just the Beginning

Diary of a Fat Girl gives you an uncensored look at the inner world of Lisa for the year following her surgery - the many ups and downs as she battled her demons, physical challenges, and the painful relationships that had plagued her for most of her life. You’ll discover - as she did - that the many thoughts we believe about ourselves - our shamefulness, our unlovability, our ugliness - are surprisingly inaccurate. And you may discover along with Lisa’s daily accounts, that it is possible to see ourselves in a new light. Pick up your copy of Diary of a Fat Girl and join the many who have been inspired and empowered on the journey of self love and true health.

Frankly recounting her weight-loss surgeries and resulting complications, Losing 140 Pounds the Hard Way follows Lisa on her difficult journey to recovery—not to a certain weight, but rather to a holistic understanding and acceptance of her body that goes beyond dress sizes or gym hours.

Both a memoir and a manual, this book will change the way you think about food, fitness, and yourself. Learn the art of affirmation, discover how to respond gently to your body’s needs, and then watch how improving your emotional well-being helps your physical body, inside and out.

About the Author

Lisa remembers, at six years old, hiding in her grandmother's kitchen and eating six meatballs in under a minute. She was truly hungry, but she didn't want anyone to see her eat, so she binged in secret. Placed on restrictive diets beginning in kindergarten, she was continually sneak eating and binge eating as a child, partially out of rebellion against her narcissistic mother, mostly because she was ravenous all the time. After years of yo-yo dieting, binge eating and purging as a teen, and reaching nearly four hundred pounds, she sought out her first weight loss surgery at age twenty-three. She soon discovered that weight loss surgery isn't the easy way out. Her book, Diary of a Fat Girl, documents her first year after gastric bypass, her third in a series of weight loss surgeries that didn't work. She wrote every day as she unraveled the pain of her past and told, in painful detail, what it's like to recover from a severe eating disorder. Brutally telling the details of her weight-loss surgeries and struggles as the daughter of a narcissistic mother, Diary of a Fat Girl follows Lisa on her difficult journey to recovery. Discover how she lost most of the weight, gained it back, lost it again, but gained a more holistic understanding and acceptance of her body that goes beyond diets, dress sizes, or gym hours.

Dedicated to helping people live healthier, happier lives, Prof Lisa Sargese is a certified hypno-counselor and trained qigong therapist. Lisa speaks and vlogs on a number of personal development topics, including goal-reaching, recovery, the mind-body connection, spirituality, and healing. In 2009, she received the Mirror Mirror Award for her work in body positivity and eating disorder recovery. In 2012 she was honored with the Tikkun Olam Award for her interfaith work. She teaches religion and psychology in her home state of New Jersey

A page turner! Pick up this book and take a journey with Lisa.
By Sandy
This is a page turner! I was captivated because even though the writings were a compilation of her blog, I felt like I was reading her personal journal. She took me, the reader, through this journey with her. Lisa takes you through all the emotions. It was very moving.
I picked up Lisa's book since I have been in her classroom and heard her speak numerous times at Montclair State University. As expressive as Lisa is in the classroom, she does an amazing job expressing herself in this book. I found myself unable to put the book down! I look forward to the next book in this series.

The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons: The History of the Human Brain as Revealed

From the author of the bestsellers The Disappearing Spoon and The Violinist's Thumb, fascinating tales of the brain and the history of neuroscience.

Early studies of the functions of the human brain used a simple method: wait for misfortune to strike-strokes, seizures, infectious diseases, lobotomies, horrendous accidents-and see how the victim coped. In many cases survival was miraculous, and observers could only marvel at the transformations that took place afterward, altering victims' personalities. An injury to one section can leave a person unable to recognize loved ones; some brain trauma can even make you a pathological gambler, pedophile, or liar. But a few scientists realized that these injuries were an opportunity for studying brain function at its extremes. With lucid explanations and incisive wit, Sam Kean explains the brain's secret passageways while recounting forgotten stories of common people whose struggles, resiliency, and deep humanity made modern neuroscience possible.

From Booklist
Science writer Kean explores the vagaries and inconsistencies of the human brain via diverting stories that chronicle medical science’s fits and starts. To say these are diverting is, however, an oversimplification since their subjects—primarily unfortunate individuals with brain injuries—command sympathy if not empathy. Yet Kean’s focus is on their contribution to the field of neuroscience along with, in too many instances, the misguided misinformation of the medical professionals who treated them. Take the case of France’s King Henry II. When he lost his right eye plus a bit of his brain to a poorly aimed jousting spear, his physicians’ limited knowledge of the brain’s physiognomy cost him his life. Then there’s President Garfield’s assassin, Charles Guiteau, whose undiagnosed bipolar mind was further addled by syphilis and who, naturally . . . thought himself fit for politics. To pick up one of these stories is to lose oneself in them. Where does the brain end and the mind begin? Curious readers will find both brain and mind fully revved up while engaging with this powerfully appealing and thought-provoking work of neuroscience history. --Donna Chavez

One of Amazon's Best Books of the Year: Science

One of The A.V. Club's Best Books of 2014

A Goodreads Choice Awards Finalist: Nonfiction

"This is Sam Kean's finest work yet, an entertaining and offbeat history of the brain populated with mad scientists, deranged criminals, geniuses, and wretched souls. The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons is one of those books that will have you following your friends around, reading passages out loud, until they snatch the book away from you and read it for themselves. Good luck getting it back."―Amy Stewart, author of The Drunken Botanist

"Put your Netflix queue on hold. Sam Kean's The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons will command your full attention from the first page. It's not just an engaging guide to mysteries of existence; it's compelling story-telling for anyone with a taste for the bizarre and metaphysical."―William Poundstone, author of Rock Breaks Scissors

"In tale after tale, best-selling author Kean provides a fascinating, and at times gloriously gory, look at how early efforts in neurosurgery were essentially a medical guessing game.... Entertaining and quotable, Kean's writing is sharp, and each individual story brings the history of neuroscience to life. Compulsively readable, wicked scientific fun."―Kirkus

"Reading this collection is like touring a museum of neuroscience's most dramatic anomalies, each chapter taking us to a different place and time.... Kean's colloquial language and intimate voice bring all of this series of mini-histories to life -- all of which are sure to stimulate a wide range of brains."―Publishers Weekly

"[Kean] proves an able guide, connecting each story with the science behind it, always with an air of enthusiastic curiosity."―Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe

"[Kean's] strength lies in his storytelling, and in the humane combination of humor and compassion toward the strange life histories he pieces together.... Kean has a penchant for the kind of vivid description that makes one want to clutch one's head tenderly close."―Margaret Quamme, Columbus Dispatch

"To pick up one of these stories is to lose oneself in them. Where does the brain end and the mind begin? Curious readers will find both brain and mind fully revved up while engaging with this powerfully appealing and thought-provoking work of neuroscience history."―Donna Chavez, Booklist

"The author's skill in illuminating how the brain functions and malfunctions manifest themselves in people's lives makes for absorbing reading....These avowals ultimately raise weighty, compelling questions about the nature of identity and what it means to be human."―The Wall Street Journal

"Strokes, seizures, accidents: if they don't kill, they can traumatize the brain so badly that an individual's personality can be significantly changed. But, explains New York Times best-selling author of the terrific The Violinist's Thumb, early neuroscientists saw such traumas as an opportunity to study the brain's wondrous workings."―Library Journal, "Barbara's Picks"

"Beyond paying tribute to the scientific advances these patients made possible, Kean humanizes the patients themselves."―Scientific American

"After tackling DNA and the periodic table in his previous books, Kean has moved on to the human brain, which he dissects via dozens of vivid anecdotes.... His subtle meta touches are a heady delight."―Joe McGovern, Entertainment Weekly

"Sam Kean can spin a tale as well as any fiction writer....Kean is a rare writer who approaches science writing as a child would a playground at recess. It's a wide-open field full of possibilities, limited only by the surroundings and what our imaginations can do with them."―PopMatters

"In the capable hands of science writer Sam Kean, stories of brain injuries shine just a bit brighter, illuminating not only the interesting characters delivering bedside diagnoses or lying on the examination table, but general principles of scientific discovery that are still relevant today....Kean breathes life into the patients as well as the physicians and scientists tasked with understanding the injuries."―The Scientist

Kean is "science's premier storyteller, the man who regularly turns the history of science into sagas filled with adventure, mystery, fascinating people, and fun."―The Washington Post

"Entrancing.... Sam Kean burrows into the workings of an organ once deemed as unknowable as the far reaches of the galaxy, and does so with boyish charm, accessible language, a prodigious amount of enthusiasm and the sobering realization that throughout history a catastrophic brain injury has ghoulishly been the neuroscientists best friend."―James Macgowan, Toronto Star

"These stories are entertaining....But they're also illuminating, as Kean shows how each one advanced scientific knowledge."―Washingtonian

"Kean delves into a scientific world before modern technology, and tells the stories of people who had sudden changes in personality, felt phantom limbs, pathologically lied, and experienced other mysteries traced back to the brain. He does so with humor and humanity, making the mind-boggling history of neuroscience a fun read."―Nicole Dubowitz, DCist

"Crammed with curious anecdotes from neuroscience's gory past."―Nature

"Mesmerizing.... With a razor-edged wit and intriguing narrative, the pages are easily devoured, all while Kean explores the deepest labyrinths of the brain."―Mellinda Hensley, Los Angeles Magazine

"Dueling Neurosurgeons will confirm Kean's already-solid reputation as a writer who can make anything understandable and interesting.[...] Although hugely entertaining (perhaps especially so in this era of vampire and zombie fascination), Kean's book contains amazingly clear details about our brains."―Winnipeg Free Press

"Engrossing, cleverly narrated."―Simon Lewsen, The Globe and Mail

"Breezy, informal, entertaining stories that link what we now know of the nervous system to events and personalities of the past."―James W. Kalat, American Psychological Association's PsycCRITIQUES

EXCELLENT
By faithful reader
Having read both of Sam's other books already, I was really looking forward to his latest. I was NOT disappointed at all! The research is detailed enough to explain neuroscientific processes without leaving us non science majors deep in the weeds. Sam's writing style incorporates humor into the discussion while providing what seems to be (to me) a primer on the evolution of the discoveries and how those were applied in real life to try to improve patients with Neuro issues. Bravo, Mr. Kean. I will be looking forward to more from you. Highly recommended.

Great Science Writing
By Book Shark
The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons: The History of the Human Brain as Revealed by True Stories of Trauma, Madness and Recovery by Sam Kean

"The Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons" is an excellent collection of stories in neuroscience. Best-selling author and gifted science writer, Sam Kean, provides readers with a real gem. Kean's great eye for captivating stories about the brain and his expertise in retelling these stories end up helping the readers gain an understanding of how the brain works. This fascinating 377-page book is broken out into the following five parts: Part I. Gross Anatomy; Part II. Cells, Senses; Circuits Part III. Body and Brain; Part IV. Beliefs and Delusions; and Part V. Consciousness.

Positives:
1. Science writing at its best. Kean is climbing the echelon of premier popular science authors.
2. Neuroscience is one of my favorite topics and thrilled that a gifted storyteller handled this book.
3. Great format and approach. Each chapter covers an intriguing story about how the brain works yet it flows beautifully as a whole.
4. Plenty of diagrams of parts of the brain and photos that complement this wonderful narrative.
5. Kean excels at keeping it real. He doesn't oversell what we know and keeps the science well grounded in reality.
6. Wonderful gift of narration that includes a well weaved story based on history and good science.
7. Once again, the impact of religion on science rears its head. "In the early 1200s, the Catholic church had declared that no proper Christians, including physicians, could shed blood; physicians therefore looked down upon surgeons as butchers."
8. Love how theories of neuroscience are introduced some are ultimately debunked and others have staying impact. "These findings led Cajal to propose the "neuron doctrine," one of the most important discoveries ever in neuroscience. In brief, Cajal's neurons were not continuous, but had tiny gaps between them. And they transmitted information in one direction only: from dendrite to cell body to axon."
9. The analysis of famous assassins' brains that lead to interesting discoveries.
10. Sometimes asking the right questions are as important as the answers. "Sorting out cause and effect is tricky with brain chemistry: does depression cause changes in brain chemicals, or do changes in brain chemicals cause depression? The street probably runs both ways. But the balance of evidence does suggest that loneliness, isolation, and a sense of helplessness can all deplete neurotransmitters--can poison the soup and sap vital ingredients."
11. Interesting look at how neurons work. "Overall, just as a wagon wheel will carve a rut into the road after repeated journeys, repeated neuron firings will carve ruts into the brain that make signals much more likely to follow some neural tracks than others."
12. How vision works. "In fact, our vision is so biased toward movement that we don't technically see stationary objects at all. To see something stationary, our brains have to scribble our eyes very subtly over its surface. Experiments have even proved that if you artificially stabilize an image on the retina with a combination of special contact lenses and microelectronics, the image will vanish."
13. A look at how the brain maps the body.
14. An interesting look at a number of interesting diseases involving the brain. "They proposed that kuru, scrapie, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob--which all cause "spongiform" brain damage and can all lie dormant for long periods before roaring awake--were caused by a new class of microbes, which they dubbed `slow viruses.'"
15. Excellent examples of specific damages to the brain and its impact. "But around age ten she began suffering from Urbach-Wiethe disease, a rare disorder that petrifies and kills amygdala cells. Within a few years she had two "black holes" where her amygdalae should have been. She hasn't felt a lick of fear since."
16. Many revelations in this book, here is one of my favorites: "Temporal lobe lesions can flip people's sexual orientations from gay to straight (or vice versa), or redirect their sexual appetites toward inappropriate things: common side effects of Klüver-Bucy include zoophilia, coprophilia, pedophilia, and -philias so idiosyncratic they don't have names."
17. A look at what happens when brain processes go awry. "Some delusions run so deep that they fray the very fabric of the victim's universe. With so-called Alice in Wonderland syndrome--a side effect of migraines or seizures--space and time get warped in unsettling ways."
18. The difference between Broca and Wernicke's area. "Generally speaking, a broken Broca's area knocks out speech production, while a wrecked Wernicke's area impairs speech comprehension."
19. By far the best retelling of the over told story of Phineas Gage (it's practically in every book of popular neuroscience). He debunks some myths pertaining to this story, which I found to be quite refreshing.
20. Works cited and so much more...

Negatives:
1. Very little not to like about this book. I would have added a timeline or a table of the greatest contributors of neuroscience as a nice additional bonus.
2. Kean stays away from controversial issues. There is very little on intelligence and as I recall nothing on gender differences. He touches upon social justice with regards to crime and punishment but I sense he holds back.
3. I loved the retelling of Phineas Gage's story but I felt Kean could have done better with the topic of consciousness.

In summary, what a fun way to learn about how the brain works; this is a beautifully written and well-researched book that is a joy to read. Fascinating stories about ordinary people who went through extraordinary circumstances and Kean retells their stories with mastery. A high recommendation! Get this book.

You will be telling friends about this book
By Bob W.
Really the history of the study of the brain, the two neurosurgeons of the title appear relatively briefly at the beginning of the book. This is only right, because they were the first neurosurgeons and lived well over 150 years ago. A lot has happened since then, and this book covers every key moment of it, mostly in terms a non-scientist can understand, and with considerable good humor. There's a lot of good historical background, and the stories of many truly bizzare brain ailments, accidents involving the brain, and just plain oddities. Cases of truly odd behavior are covered in excruciating detail. When you finish this book, you will feel, well, brainier.

A Capitalism for the People: Recapturing the Lost Genius of American Prosperity, by Luigi Zingales

When the Italian-born economist Luigi Zingales came to the United States in the 1980s, he embraced the American Dream: the belief that what brings you success is hard work, not luck or who you know. But the economic events of the past decade have put American capitalism in crisis. Now, living in America’s heartland, Zingales warns in A Capitalism for the People that the U.S. economy risks deteriorating into a pro-business rather than pro-market system run by corrupt politicians. Presenting a real-world blueprint to restore true competition to our economic system, Zingales gives hope that the U.S. can rebound to greatness.

Review
Futures Magazine
“Luigi Zingales lays out the glaring defects that have come to corrode our current economic system in a very easy to understand picture.... Recommended reading for those interested in the evolving nature of our interconnected system of government and the economy.”

Bloomberg View
“[F]ascinating.... Zingales provides an enormous service by laying out such persuasive evidence.”

National Review Online
“[A Capitalism for the People] is the book that hits closest to the mark on the question of where the American center-right ought to go in the next few years.”

Sacramento Bee
“Zingales offers more than rehashed Friedman or Hayek. It’s a book that should appeal to tea partyers and the Occupy Wall Street crowd.”

Publishers Weekly
“Zingales…presents a striking dichotomy.... Engaging.”

Financial Times
“Zingales’s fundamental diagnosis is right.... [T]his remains a stimulating essay on the nature of American capitalism and the issues that will determine the pace of America’s relative decline.”

Marginal Revolution, Tyler Cowen
“I know you have book fatigue, popular economics book fatigue, policy book fatigue, and books-with-subtitles-like-this fatigue, all at once. But this book is really, really good. It hits all the right notes, is clearly written, and refers to academics as the new crony capitalists. I agreed with almost all of it. If I had to pick out one book, of this entire lot of books, to explain what is going on right now to a popular audience of non-economists, this might well be it.”

J. Bradford DeLong, University of California, Berkeley
“More than 30 years ago, Milton and Rose Director Friedman raised high the banner of small-government free-market libertarianism with their Free to Choose. Now, a generation later, income inequality is substantially higher, the globe is even more interconnected, and our partial financial deregulation has backfired badly. Luigi Zingales thus has a harder task as he tries to update the small-government free-market libertarian position for the 21st century. But he has done a very good job at it.”

Robert J. Shiller, author of Finance and the Good Society

“This remarkably creative book, driven by a strong moral conviction, offers a bold array of ideas for us to ponder, so we can really make the American capitalist model work better for everyone.”

Edmund S. Phelps, Director, Center on Capitalism and Society, Columbia University
“In A Capitalism for the People, Luigi Zingales joins the small but influential group of economists who see that America’s economy is now more and more corporatist, less and less capitalist. His impressive account of our downhill slide is enriched by his deep knowledge of the harm wrought by the worst excesses of Italian crony capitalism. A must-read.”

Nell Minow, co-author of Corporate Governance and co-owner and board member of GMI Ratings
“An especially accessible and holistic assessment of what went wrong in our financial markets and an especially thoughtful and constructive proposal for the future.  Highly recommended!”

Paul Ryan, U.S. Congressman, Wisconsin
“In A Capitalism for the People, Luigi Zingales exposes the pernicious collusion of big business and big government – offering the sharp analytical perspective of a world-renowned economist and the unique personal perspective of an immigrant living the American Dream. This must-read for policymakers and citizens alike serves as a lucid call to action for rediscovering what makes America exceptional.”

N. Gregory Mankiw, Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics, Harvard University, and author of Principles of Economics

“A Capitalism for the People is a wise, deep, and timely book. With lively prose, Zingales diagnoses what is right and wrong with the U.S. economy. Whether your political sympathies lie with the Tea Party, Occupy Wall Street, or someplace in between, you will learn much about how we can best promote an economic future that works for all of us.”

The Economist

“[A]n elegy to the America (Zingles) found when he moved here 24 years ago.”

Washington Post
“[An] accessible and powerfully argued book.”

John R. Talbott, Huffington Post
“[O]utstanding.... I give the book my ultimate compliment; it is so full of new and innovative ideas that it makes you pause and think on every page.” National Review“[W]e are fortunate to have an Italian-born economist so powerfully and persuasively defending America’s once exceptional free-enterprise system.” Co.Exist, a blog of Fast Company “Zingales is readable, engaging, and full of insight. A Capitalism For The People is worth the time of anyone, left or right, who cares about the future of the American market system.”

Adam Ozimek, Modeled Behavior, a blog on Forbes.com
“[A Capitalism for the People is] unquestionably insightful and thought-provoking, and it has plenty of smart policy recommendations….I do strongly recommend A Capitalism for the People to anyone looking for a robust and pragmatic vision of free market economics directed at current problems.”

LA Progressive
“Zingales is excellent.”

Iain Martin, The Telegraph
“[A] brilliant and important new book.”

Mechanics Institute Library
“[Zingales] provides a forceful look at how pro-business forces overwhelmed the pro-market principles that made American capitalism great, and how we can get it back on track. This book should have a wide readership, from the Occupy Wall Street crowd to Tea Partyers.”

great book
By MxM
Luigi Zingales' book is fascinating. Once I started it, I could not put it away and finished it in two days. Zingales presents a clear, comprehensive (and scary) analysis of the unhealthy relationship that has developed in the US between big business and politics, and its nefarious effects on competition, incentives, the lives of ordinary people, and the American Dream.
Many blame "capitalism" for the financial crisis. Zingales argues and demonstrates that there is an enormous difference between "capitalism" and "the capitalists", and between "pro-market" and "pro-business" choices and policies. It is the capitalists and pro-business policies that are to blame, not capitalism. Pro-business choices have favored the incumbents (rich people). As a result, outsiders (ordinary people) have seen their opportunities reduced, their shot at the American dream denied. The book argues that we need to put a stop to the cozy relationship between politicians, Wall Street and big business. Zingales demonstrates (with logic and plenty of examples) that we need pro-market policies that foster competition and meritocracy, and which ultimately benefit ordinary people.
This is a great book. I strongly recommend it to anyone who cares about the future of America, from supporters of (true) capitalism to Occupy Wall Streeters.

Important work documenting the woes of crony capitalism
By DFechter
Suppose you learned that in 1998 Citicorp planned to merge with insurance company Travelers, despite the fact that such a merger was illegal under the Glass-Steagall Act, which blocked banks from owning businesses in other financial sectors such as investment banking and, yes, insurance. You might ask, why would Citicorp press on with the merger? Luigi Zingales, in his well-footnoted book, reports it was because they "had enough discussions [with the Fed and the Treasury] to believe this will not be a problem."

Suppose you also learned that Robert Rubin, then the Secretary of Treasury under President Bill Clinton, was lobbying for changes to the Act that would remove the restrictions on banks. (Such a bill passed in 1999 with a bipartisan majority of 343-86.)

You still might not find that too outrageous. There were, after all, reasonable arguments against the Glass-Steagall restrictions and even today there is controversy over their advantages and disadvantages.

But finally you learn that Rubin left his post at the Treasury Department exactly one day after the bill passed (he had actually resigned 6 weeks before) and just 108 days later he was hired by Citigroup (yes, the firm he had helped through his lobbying efforts to change Glass-Steagall) for a salary of $15 million a year and, as author Luigi Zingales points out, "without any operating responsibilities."

It was not, as Zingales points out, illegal. But was it right?

Consider it Exhibit A in the case Zingales makes against "crony capitalism," the unholy alliance of business and government. "Business" may be commonly perceived to be in the camp of the Republicans but, as Zingales shows, crony capitalism is perhaps the most successful ongoing bipartisan effort since the fabrication of the first pork barrel.

That is how we end up with Dwayne Andreas, once the CEO of food and commodities giant Archer Daniels Midland, buying Jimmy Carter's peanut warehouse and, a few years later, selling Bob Dole an apartment in Bal Harbor, Florida. (Andreas' Wikipedia page reports that he is "one of the most prominent political campaign donors in the United States, having contributed millions of dollars to Democratic and Republican candidates alike.")

Similar examples abound in Zingales' systematic documentation of how the US economy has gone from "pro-market" capitalism to "pro-business" cronyism. Our overly large federal government has spawned an explosion of lobbying, influence peddling and corruption. Zingales astutely points out that the "Occupy" and the "Tea Party" movements are actually aligned against the same opponent. The Occupiers may focus their wrath on business and the Tea Party on government, but to Zingales they are two sides of the same coin.

Zingales, a professor of Finance at the University of Chicago, is particularly sensitive about crony capitalism. He immigrated to the United States from Italy specifically to escape the corruption of the Italian system, in which getting ahead was a function of who you know and not what you know. Corruption is the norm. In an amusing but telling example Zingales says that if a mayor in Italy advised the citizens to tape their windows, as an American mayor did in advance of stormy weather, Zingales would have ignored the advice, assuming the mayor's brother was selling tape.

Zingales is a capitalist, a believer in the free market. In his view, however, many of the elements which enabled the free market to create so much wealth while generating so little resentment in the United States are shifting unfavorably. He highlights the undermining of support for the free-market system driven by increases in inequality for reasons other than meritocracy. As Zingales says, "the perception...that the system is rigged."

One manifestation of this "rigging" is the bailouts. Zingales devotes a chapter to detailing how the increasing involvement of the government in the economy, through spending and regulation, and the increasing coziness of government with the businesses it was ostensibly regulating, led almost naturally to the use of taxpayer money to bail out financial institutions in crisis. (And not just financial institutions, as evidenced by the multiple bailouts of the auto industry.) All of which is harmful both to popular support for what is called "the free market" as well as to the operation of the market itself.

Zingales is at his best documenting how we have gone astray. The book is filled with examples and anecdotes and supplemented by Zingales' insight as an economist, explaining exactly how these developments are harmful.

He provides several recommendations, which make up about half of the book. His proposals are a mix of traditional solutions, such as school vouchers to improve education and improvements in bankruptcy laws to restore the balance between borrowers and lenders, and some creative ideas such as "retooling vouchers" to reward schools based on their success in actually finding new jobs for the unemployed workers they train. He has a host of proposals designed to "promote" competition (such as "reinventing" antitrust to focus not on market power but on political power).

As a member of academia, Zingales believes business ethics should be featured more prominently in business schools. He would like to see opprobrium become the social norm for unethical business behavior as opposed to the current culture of turning a blind eye or even rewarding it.

Finally, Zingales desperately wants to reduce the influence of lobbying on the political and economic landscape. While he makes a convincing case that lobbying should be curtailed, his proposals do not inspire confidence. He calls for "public shaming" of companies which abuse lobbying. He believes in an increase in the use of class-action lawsuits. The reality is that as long as government remains large and intrusive, lobbying will be a problem. Reducing the size of government, and therefore reducing the rewards from lobbying, may be the best hope.

A brilliant and principled critique of the Left and Right, from the Libertarian Right
By Lawrence
Zingales is an Italian who loves the best part of America. He writes with authority (economist at the University of Chicago business school) about the great threat to America: A corruption of its core engine of prosperity -- a free market. That corruption comes not from Reds in high places: It comes from the collusion successful capitalists engage in with dependent politicians, producing a bevy of regulations that happen to protect the successful, and block the competitors. Zingales applies this analysis to a wide range of policies, but none as important as a causes of the collapse on Wall Street. Critically important and perfectly timed: Read and recommend this book!

This book is an excellent guide for people with narcolepsy
By Kate
This book is a collection of research summaries on various issues related to narcolepsy. Most of the chapters are well written and offer concise, data-based research that can be applied to living with narcolepsy. A few of the chapters were more anectdotal commentaries, but I believe that this is because they are written about areas of the field that have almost no research data available. This book is a must read for any person with narcolepsy who enjoys having access to the scientific data. It is somewhat technical, but offers a tremendous amount of information that can be applied to living with this sleep disorder. I highly recommend it for narcoleptics who have an interest in understanding the research that has been completed so far in this field. I would also recommend it for any physician (GP, internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry, family practice, peds) who may encounter a patient with narcolepsy.
