From a beginners perspective
By Miranda T. Walker
Thank you Mr. Faubion for making this new experience so easy and fun! I read the other reviews and just had to put my two cents in! I had NO trouble following, understanding and learning from your information packed book. Perhaps the lady wasn't aware this was a beginners book? Oh well, I'm looking at some of the other books you have written now and will continue to learn from them I'm sure! Thanks, and please keep writing!

Hard to follow?
By Paul Kattner
Another customer said this book was a piece of trash and hard to follow. Maybe he/she was referring to a different book? Basic knowledge of notation is helpful to know before hand, but this book is useful to anyone who wants to learn to play the pan flute.

Mel Bay's the man!
By Charles A. Hardy
What else can one say about Mel Bay?

Pan pipes are not as easy to play as Zamfir makes it appear. As with harmonicas, proper technique can let you get sharps and flats.

This book will help you get to the point where you can fool others into thinking the pan pipes are easy.

Electric Machines (Electric Power Engineering Series), by Charles A. Gross

The two major broad applications of electrical energy are information processing and energy processing. Hence, it is no wonder that electric machines have occupied a large and revered space in the field of electrical engineering. Such an important topic requires a careful approach, and Charles A. Gross' Electric Machines offers the most balanced, application-oriented, and modern perspective on electromagnetic machines available.

Written in a style that is both accessible and authoritative, this book explores all aspects of electromagnetic-mechanical (EM) machines. Rather than viewing the EM machine in isolation, the author treats the machine as part of an integrated system of source, controller, motor, and load. The discussion progresses systematically through basic machine physics and principles of operation to real-world applications and relevant control issues for each type of machine presented. Coverage ranges from DC, induction, and synchronous machines to specialized machines such as transformers, translational machines, and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Stimulating example applications include electric vehicles, wind energy, and vertical transportation. Numerous example problems illustrate and reinforce the concepts discussed.

Along with appendices filled with unit conversions and background material, Electric Machines is a succinct, in-depth, and complete guide to understanding electric machines for novel applications.

The Second Curve: Thoughts on Reinventing Society, by Charles Handy

Britain's leading guru looks to the future.

Charles Handy is one of the giants of contemporary thought. His books on management – including Understanding Organizations and Gods of Management – have changed the way we view business. His work on broader issues and trends – such as Beyond Certainty – has changed the way we view society.

In The Second Curve, Handy builds on a life's work to glimpse into the future and see what challenges and opportunities lie ahead. He looks at current trends in capitalism and asks whether it is a sustainable system. He explores the dangers of a society built on credit. He challenges the myth that remorseless growth is essential. He even asks whether we should rethink our roles in life – as students, parents, workers and voters – and what the aims of an ideal society of the future should be.

Provocative and thoughtful as ever, he sets out the questions we all need to ask ourselves – and points us in the direction of some of the answers.

Review
"The bracing manifesto of a forward-looking radical ... The Second Curve successfully channels the energy and enthusiasm of the younger generation, in whom Handy places great hope ... Handy's prescience over the decades has earned him the right to dabble and, given his record, you would not want to bet against some of his radical ideas coming true." -- Andrew Hill Financial Times "Gentle but incisive ... [Handy's] voice is a reassuring, challenging presence. We should continue to listen to it." Management Today "This book will get you thinking." Daily Telegraph "Strong and original... It is impossible not to be impressed and a little daunted by so much energy and wisdom." Irish Independent "Wise words, succinctly put - the work of a master." -- Peter Cook HR Zone

Enjoyable

This is a book that you will get lost in. You will consult it, consider it and radiate its knowledge. Here the author gives thought to the future and examines what challenges, opportunities and problems we may face.

Is the current capitalist-led system sustainable? Are we building a society that is set to implode upon itself? What might the ideal society of the future look like and do we need to change our roles to fit into this new world? All this and more is considered in a non-hysterical, responsive, provocative and thoughtful manner.

The author has taken the opportunity to revalidate many of his previously stated arguments and predictions whilst expanding and developing new ideas. It feels to be a harmonious and sensitive collection. Society does appear to be in a permanent state of flux and the author notes that he cannot imagine how things will be in even 30 years time, so much of what we take for granted today could be viewed as a quaint, distant memory tomorrow.

“Anything that is based on information, be it books, music or entertainment, will effectively be free, but a world of free goods offers few paying jobs. If they do find or, better, create any work that pays they will need to keep doing it well into their eighties so they had better enjoy it,” notes the author, adding: “Already, as I see it, too much of all that is new favours the few and not the many. Society is out of balance. Power is unequally distributed. In business, the information economy is turning into a winner-takes-all one, where the likes of Amazon, Facebook and Google dominate and gobble up any daring newcomer.”

Central to the author’s thinking is the Sigmoid Curve, a mathematical concept that is used to project the future and – it is contended – something that tracks everything in our lives and the organisations and concepts that control them.

“There seems to be no escape from the Sigmoid Curve. The only variable is the length of the curve. The Roman Empire lasted 400 years, but finally reached its end. Other empires lasted less long before they dipped, as the British Empire did and the American one surely will. Governments and dictatorships ultimately outstay their welcome. On a smaller scale, businesses used to last on average for 40 years before they collapsed or were taken over; now the average lifespan appears to have dropped to a mere 14 years,” wrote the author, noting that the key is to leapfrog the change, implementing a so-called second curve to effectively restart the cycle. It is easier said than done.

The use of a series of mini essays is a great solution, letting the reader digest smaller elements and progress at their own pace. All too many books tend to focus on the big picture, forgetting that not everybody has the time or energy to devote to many hours of reading at a time.

So in conclusion, a highly enjoyable book that was neither alarmist nor conformist but it will get you thinking.

Charles Handy continues his remarkable insights
By A Reader
Charles Handy continues his career as a remarkable author who asks many questions which cause you to pause about corporate life. His insight is far reaching and reflects trends in a hostile economic system for many individuals. I think Charles Handy is one of the few authors to consider the long term implications of decisions made by the highest levels of institutional governance and the ofttimes poor decisions being made in the sake of expedience. A truly brilliant thinker. I've been able to make some nice returns based on the concepts he has raised. For example, I invested in a hotel realty trust because I realized that people may change their purchasing habits to buying online from retailers like Amazon but the cost of duplicating hotel properties especially in urban centers is becoming prohibitively expensive, hence the market power of the existing hotels becomes even greater. Charles Handy basically lays out our economic future as being stratified such as those living in and around London succeeding while rural areas fall behind economically. This is a superb book.

"Behind this book lies the assumption that, in spite of protestations to the contrary, historians have created their own specialized vocabulary or unique ways of defining familiar words. As a result, Ritter's dictionary will serve as a quick means to the definition and background of more than 80 concepts commonly used or misused by historians. Each entry includes a brief definition of the concept, a historical essay of its development with appropriate cross-references to related entries, an annotated list of the works cited in the essay, and suggestions for further reading. A generous index of persons and subjects allows for more comprehensive linking of material in the individual entries that can be accomplished by simply using the cross-references. Ritter's choice of historical concepts includes basic terms, such as crisis, ' event, ' and fact'; various isms such as historicism, ' idealism, ' and positivism'; and types of history--comparative, intellectual, social or universal. Although the concepts often possess multiple and conflicting definitions, Ritter's entries skillfully guide the reader to an overall historical and philosophical understanding of the various usages. The selection of concepts is generally thorough.... Undergraduate and graduate collections."-Choice

Professor Ritter Rules!
By A Customer
I took several classes from Doctor Ritter, and found his lectures to be the best-organized of any professor I've yet had. The benefits of this lecture style are also found in his Dictionary, which can be used as a corollary to anyone interested in studying history (esp. that of modern Europe). It is a great way to easily familiarize yourself with political trends, social theories, movements, and more.

Confessions (Penguin Classics), by Saint Augustine

The son of a pagan father and a Christian mother, Saint Augustine spent his early years torn between conflicting faiths and world views. His Confessions, written when he was in his forties, recount how, slowly and painfully, he came to turn away from his youthful ideas and licentious lifestyle, to become instead a staunch advocate of Christianity and one of its most influential thinkers. A remarkably honest and revealing spiritual autobiography, the Confessions also address fundamental issues of Christian doctrine, and many of the prayers and meditations it includes are still an integral part of the practice of Christianity today.

About the Author
St Augustine of Hippo, the great Doctor of the Latin Church, was born at Thagaste in North Africa, in A.D. 354. He was brought up as a Christian but he was soon converted to the Manichean religion. He also came under the influence of Neoplatonism. However, in 387 he renounced all his unorthodox beliefs and was baptised. His surviving works had a great influence on Christian theology and the psychology and political theology of the West.

Good translation
By bonhomme
Do not be swayed by posters who suggest that the "old english" is too difficult to get past. Open your mind up, it's not written in the prose of tomorrow's next best NYT top 10 seller, and that's a tremendous thing.

My 2 cents:
Read each sentence on it's own, slowly. All of the thou's/thys/etc. will disappear. Do that for page 1. And slowly absorb a few more pages.. (Hint: read this at a time/location where you can truly relax and concentrate-- morning subway commute, with ipod in of course, or leisurely on the beach-- whatever suits you). And see how far you get.

Enjoy.

Final thought: If you're still intrigued, research the orgin of the book and the circumstances under which it was originally published.

Understanding Augustine
By alan j. greczynski
Augustine is an interesting person to say the least. Modern readers may have difficulty in understanding Augustine, for his world was very different but very much the same as ours. Augustine begins as a Christian then turns to Manichaeism. Manichaeism, like Gnosticism is competing with "orthodox" Christianity. Augustine is from the breadbasket of the Roman empire, North Africa. Thagaste, in modern day Algiers was a Christian city very different from modern Muslim Algeria. His mother Monica had a strong Christian background and looked to the day Augustine would "come around" back to Christianity. Growing up a "wunderkind" and attending the best schools gave Augustine a sort of "cockiness" to his character. Augustine had a relationship with a woman and a child by her (an almost "modern" relationship). It is in the parallels in our world (American empire) and the late Roman empire that is relevant for us today. Augustine, who is a deep thinker begins to ponder his own life and the life of the empire he lives in. He ponders the nature of sin, time and death. He comes back to Christianity and is baptized with his son. The death of his close friend and then son Adeodatus affect him greatly. These events, along with the "decaying" empire that is around him give rise to his work "City of God." Written in "Books" rather than chapters may seem odd to us moderns. His book Confessions is not an easy read for modern readers, but for those who seek his wisdom it is there.

Augustine’s Confessions is a classic in theology, philosophy, church history, and early autobiographies—and not without reason. Confessions provides modern academics with details about daily life in the fourth century Roman Empire, Augustine’s pivotal theological and philosophical arguments, and a vivid view of the struggles and aspirations of fourth-century Christians. Various themes permeate Augustine’s writings—themes that, perhaps because of Augustine’s massive effect on Christian culture, happen to continue in relevance in modern life. Augustine’s autobiography is rife with similar and familiar concerns between our time and Augustine’s own time. Sexual promiscuity, rebellion against authority, conversion, differing interpretations of divine message, and parental concern are all major themes in this book that continue to carry a heavy weight in modern cultural conflicts. Not unlike many life stories today, Augustine was rebellious as a youth; after experiences of conversion, he turned his life 180 degrees around. This must be a reminder that humans have, for the most part, stayed the same over the last 1600 years, but also a reminder of the widespread influence Augustine’s writing has held over so many years of Western culture. The most striking aspect of Augustine’s Confessions as a window into late antiquity is, in fact, this very reminder that people in late antiquity shared many of the same struggles and conflicts of worldview that those in Western culture share today.
Augustine organizes his autobiography into thirteen books. The first three books deal with his life as a student; Augustine discusses his early years in detail that shows his very relatable, human side—childhood opinions on school, peer pressure towards vandalism, and strong sexual drive towards promiscuity as an adolescent. The next six books concern his conversion. He discusses his long process from a smart, passionate, and hedonistic scholar to Manichaeism to (at long last) Christianity. The last three books contain the philosophical and theological discussions Augustine’s Confessions is known for—discussions of age-old questions like eternity, the radical evil of humanity, and the integrations of Greek philosophy into Christian theology. Together, these thirteen books work together to make his masterpiece at once endearingly human and relatable as it is brilliant in its theological authority.
Augustine’s discussion of his life, with all the personal details and the ex-post-facto lens, shows us more than anything else the similarity of struggles people in late antiquity and modernity went through. In his second book, Augustine repents of the acts of theft he committed in his adolescent years. He tells a story about how he would go to an orchard with some friends, steal pears, and throw them to pigs, only eating a few of the pears. He confesses this story—a story that has been impressed upon his conscience and memory as a deep, dark secret—to God, writing, “‘What fruit had I’, wretched boy, in these things (Rom. 6:21) which I now blush to recall, above all that theft in which I loved nothing but the theft itself?” (II. viii (16)). He explains that this was not an individual act of crime, but rather an act of foolish adolescent peer pressure:
The theft itself was a nothing, and for that reason I was more the miserable. Yet had I been alone I would not have done it—I remember my state of mind to be thus at the time—alone I would never have done it. Therefore my love in that act was to be associated with the gang in whose company I did it…. my pleasure was not in the pears; it was in the crime itself, done in association with a sinful group. (II. viii (16))
Reading this passage, one realizes that adolescents faced the same peer pressure that they face today. The phenomenon of vandalism is not, it appears, a modern one: “As soon as the words are spoken ‘Let us go and do it’, one is ashamed not to be shameless” (ix (17). Augustine’s own lens of retrospective confession shows us that he felt and confessed his guilt in a way not unfamiliar to modern readers.
Perhaps the most influential theme of Augustine’s autobiography is that of chastity and purity. Throughout the book, Augustine repents over and over again for his licentious years, disgusted at his own deeds. Although Augustine might be seen as a terrible hypocrite—condemning his past sins after he committed them all—one must understand that Augustine is not being holier-than-thou. After all, he is writing to God, and is thus incredibly careful to show his repentance for previous deeds. Augustine believes in the radical depravity of man, but his Confessions is ultimately a book of personal repentance, not a book of condemning others’ sins; without God, all men are equally depraved of good. Because of the personal nature of this book, those who choose to read it and be convicted by it do so at their personal choice to be convicted.
We are given a view of the family dynamic of the ancient world as well. The modern family of parents with differing religions does not appear to be unusual in late antiquity. Augustine, writing about his parents’ desire to educate him, tells us that “Both of them, as I realized, were very ambitious for me: my father because he hardly gave a thought to you at all, and his ambitions for me were concerned with mere vanities; my mother because she thought it would do no harm and would be a help to set me on the way towards you, if I studied the traditional pattern of a literary education. That at least is my conjecture as I try to recall the characters of my parents” (iii (8)). The lack of surprise with which Augustine writes of his parents’ differing religions makes it apparent that such mixed marriages were not uncommon. However, Augustine also shows us the regularity of domestic abuse within late antiquity. Augustine’s father “was exceptional both for his kindness and for his quick temper” (IX. ix (19)), yet Augustine’s mother, Saint Monica, in her piety bore the abuse, knowing “that an angry husband should not be opposed, not merely by anything she did, but even by a word” (IX. ix (19)); after his bout of anger had passed, she would reason with him again. “[M]any wives,” writes Augustine, “married to gentler husbands bore the marks of blows and suffered disfigurements to their faces” (IX. ix (19)). Yet she was so dedicated to her husband “as her lord” that she even rebuked other wives for complaining about their husbands’ abuse. Augustine certainly does not dismiss his father’s behavior as acceptable, but it does seem from his writing that such abuse was common behavior with few consequences.
Although the marital relationships of ancient antiquity differed significantly from the modern dynamics, the process of Augustine’s conversion bares many parallels to contemporary religious conversions. The close involvement of family, the fervent prayer over many years, and the passionate and bright young scholar’s realization and conversion are all familiar motifs that are found in Augustine’s conversion process. While still a Manichaean, Augustine’s mother asked her priest to debate with Augustine in order to convince him to become a Christian. The priest refused, saying that Augustine “was still unready to learn,” still in the pliable conceits of youth. He simply told her to continue to pray for Augustine, whilst assuring her that Augustine would eventually come to realize the truth of Christianity in his reading. Naturally, she was unhappy with such a response from the priest. In any case, this scenario closely reflects the familiar case of the religious parent who worries for her child’s obsession with a certain religion—in Augustine’s case, Manichaeism. The partisan aspect of religious disagreement so widespread within today’s culture is also apparent in Augustine’s writing: “[H]e [the priest] told her [Saint Monica] how he himself as a small boy had been handed over to the Manicheans by his mother, whom they had led astray” (III. xii (21)). Disagreement on interpretation of Saint Monica’s vision about Augustine’s conversion also adds to the realism of Augustine’s account; while Augustine believed that Saint Monica would convert to Manichaeism, Saint Monica interpreted the vision to mean that Augustine would become Christian. Augustine’s conversion from a young rebel to an austere conservative from a series of realizations is reminiscent of the twentieth-century Jesus movement that stemmed largely from the hippie movement. Although Augustine was no hippie—not even an intellectual hippie—he was nonetheless a rebel, and during his conversion he channeled all of his anti-establishmentarian attitude into becoming averse to the common practices of worldly pleasures.
One controversial form of entertainment in late antiquity was the gladiatorial games. Augustine writes vehemently against them in Book VI chapters vii-viii, lamenting the love of the gladiatorial games some of his close friends held. Somehow the games possessed an incredible ability to enliven the bloodlust in a person, and people could become addicted to the games from first sight. Describing a friend who had been resistant to watch a gladiatorial game, Augustine writes: “As soon as he saw the blood, he at once drank in savagery and did not turn away. His eyes were riveted. He imbibed madness. Without any awareness of what was happening to him, he found delight in the murderous contest and was inebriated by bloodthirsty pleasure. He was not now the person who had come in, but just one of the crow which he had joined, and a true member of the group which had brought him” (VI. viii (13)). Roman gladiatorial fights do not exist in the modern world, yet this form of entertainment was a common part of the daily life of many Roman citizens. Augustine’s perspective sheds light both on the widespread access to such entertainment and the controversial nature this entertainment held—not unlike many modern controversial issues that concern libertarian principles—and gives us a great insider’s view of the phenomenon of the Roman gladiatorial fights and its place in society while under the magnifying glass of controversy and going through the transition that led to its extinction.
Writing in the late antiquity, Augustine’s personal autobiography gives us an authentic, honest, open-hearted view of his life. The details Augustine discusses when writing about his struggles as a youth show us that people in late antiquity had many similarities and faced similar challenges as do people in modern times. To be sure, some things have changed: Roman gladiatorial fights are illegal in most countries, and domestic abuse is much less common in first-world countries. Nonetheless, the striking similarities between people in late antiquity and today are revealed by the personal perspective Augustine’s autobiography provides. People may have enjoyed different forms of entertainment at the time, but ultimately the struggles and social forces that propelled people to right and wrong have remained the same.

The Holy Grail of Macroeconomics: Lessons from Japan's Great Recession, by Richard C. Koo

The revised edition of this highly acclaimed work presents crucial lessons from Japan's recession that could aid the US and other economies as they struggle to recover from the current financial crisis.

This book is about Japan's 15-year long recession and how it affected current theoretical thinking about its causes and cures. It has a detailed explanation on what happened to Japan, but the discoveries made are so far-reaching that a large portion of economics literature will have to be modified to accommodate another half to the macroeconomic spectrum of possibilities that conventional theorists have overlooked.

The author developed the idea of yin and yang business cycles where the conventional world of profit maximization is the yang and the world of balance sheet recession, where companies are minimizing debt, is the yin. Once so divided, many varied theories developed in macro economics since the 1930s can be nicely categorized into a single comprehensive theory- The Holy Grail of Macro Economics

Reviews from the previous edition

"...provide fascinating insights into the problems of Japan...interesting thesis" (Wilmott.com/blogs, August 2009)

"…the Japanese policymakers who told everyone the US was in danger of falling into a prolonged period of economic weakness were right. To understand why this is true, you need to read a brilliant book by Richard Koo of the Nomura Research Institute." (Financial Times, January 2009)

"…the definitive book on Japan's decade-long recession in the 1990s." (USA Today, March 2009)

"Books about the current global economic crisis are being written and published by the truckload. But few – perhaps none – are worth reading… Richard Koo, chief economist at the Nomura Research Institute in Tokyo, a think tank attached to Japan's biggest investment bank, watched Japan's 'lost decade' from an excellent vantage point: he was close enough to understand the detail, data and ways in which both corporate and political decisions were made, and independent enough to be able to analyse what happened in a reasonably detached and cool way." (Survival, May 2009)

"A must-read to an understanding of what Japan went through and what the United States and Europe may experience is Koo's latest book The Holy Grail of Macroeconomics: Lessons from Japan's Great Recession." (The Edge Financial Daily, December 2008)

From the Inside Flap
How did the great Depression of the 1930s get to be so bad for so long? That question has baffled economists for decades. Ben S. Bernanke, the current Fed Chairman, even called understanding the great Depression the as yet-unattained "holy Grail of Macroeconomics." Japan's Great recession of 1990-2005 finally gave us some vital clues as to how a post-bubble economy can plunge into prolonged recession while leaving conventional policy responses largely ineffective.

Building on the author's earlier work Balance Sheet Recession: Japan's Struggle with Uncharted Economics and its Global Implications (John Wiley, Singapore, 2003), The Holy Grail of Macroenomics: Lessons from Japan's Great Recession argues that there are actually two phases to an economy, the ordinary (or yang) phase, in which the private sector is maximizing profits, and the post-bubble (or yin) phase, in which private sector is minimizing debt, or repairing damaged balance sheets. Although conventional economics is useful in analyzing economies in the yang phase, it is less useful in explaining phenomena such as the "liquidity trap" that is typical of an economy in the yin phase. The distinction between the yin and yang phases also explains why some policies work well in some situations but not in others. Indeed, it offers the crucial foundation to macroeconomics that has been missing since the days of Keynes.

This groundbreaking book not only explains what happened to the U.S. during the Great Depression and to Japan during the Great recession, it also offers important policy recommendations for fighting post-bubble economic downturns in any country, including the current subprime crisis in the U.S.

From the Back Cover
There will probably never be a last word on the Japanese financial catastrophe of the 1990s but Richard Koo's book may be the most significant analysis ever published. Agree or disagree, any analyst of the current United States situation must consider Koo's arguments. - Lawrence H. Summers

Richard Koo does it again. By presenting a unique theory regarding the great Depression and Japan's recession of the last 15 years. Koo offers a new understanding of current problems in the U.S. and other economies. With many pearls of analytical wisdom, The Holy Grail of Macroeconomics: Lessons from Japan's great recession is a must-read for economist, policymakers and individual investors alike. - Nobuyuki Idei

Richard Koo's pioneering work on balance-sheet recession has been invaluable in understanding the difficulty faced by Japan's economy and monetary authorities during the past 15 years. In this book, he has shown that the U.S. Great Depression was also driven by the same balance sheet concerns of the private sector, indicating that this kid of recession can happen to any post-bubble economy. I sincerely hope that the lessons contained in this book are put to good use in fighting similar recessions elsewhere, including the U.S. subprime crisis. - Yasushi Mieno

The Holy Grail of Macroeconomics presents a brilliant and original framework for understanding-and overcoming-a post-bubble economic crisis such as the one the world faces today. By discrediting the conventional view that monetary policy is effective in combating a post-bubble recession, Richard Koo has made an invaluable contribution to economic theory and at just the right time. Only fiscal stimulus on a very large scale can prevent a severe global slump in the years ahead. This is an important book. It should be required reading for economic policy makers all around the world. - Richard Duncan

important work on debt aversion
By A. Menon
This book is a good account of the phenomenon of debt aversion. The thesis of the book is pretty straightforward and is that, after asset bubbles burst and businesses are technically insolvent through liquidation analysis, they are likely to pay down debt irrespective of monetary policy. The fact that the businesses are technically insolvent despite market prices is described as being a function of information asymmetry and bank incentives.

This realization is deemed to be the missing link to complete economist's understanding of how to bridge fiscal macroeconomic thought and monetary economic thought and the solutions required in the aftermath of a burst asset bubble. Discussing the shortfalls of Friedman's positions on the demand function for money to be a function of nominal interest rates, it is argued that when one is in the position of being insolvent yet operational, the focus shifts from using lending lines to maximise ROE to using free cashflow to minimize the debt that is causing this insolvency. When this market regime is upon us, it is the need of the government to use fiscal policy to fund the output gap.

I think this is pretty accurate as an analysis of the problems that arise in monetary policy when the world is in fear of the phenomenon that hurt them (being burdened with debt that is greater relative to the asset base one had assumed would back it) and this aversion has macroeconomic repurcussions. My only criticism is, I dont think this is as obscure a result as is described. Most ecnomists realize how output gaps can arise, how debt aversion can form. Richard Posner, who is a judge, talks about debt aversion off-hand as though its well known. So all in all i think its a god perscriptive piece on a very real phenomenon we deal with but its not revolutionary and this phenomenon is discussed by others (though few have gone in to as much detail about it).

One of the most original books on macroeconomics in a decade - a must read for any serious student of macroeconomics
By Yoda
In this book Dr. Koo posits that economies in a balance sheet recession, as opposed to a slow down due to decline in aggregate demand, due not respond to textbook monetary remedies involving the use of expansionary monetary policy. The reason, he proposes, is that during this period companies and households are primarily interested in reducing their debt balances. Hence low interest rates provide little incentive for economic actors to invest. The impact is the same as in a Keynesian liquidity trap framework. However, the reason is different. In a liquidity trap, as Keynes proposed, monetary policy is not effective because economic actors do not demand funds because they see no need to invest as they see insufficient demand for their product. In Dr. Koo's framework, these same actors instead are too busy reducing their debt holdings. In this framework, Dr. Koo proposes, monetary policy is not effective while fiscal policy is. Dr. Koo is very careful to emphasize, however, that fiscal effeciveness in the Japanese case has consisted of preventing a collapse of the Japanese economy as opposed to providing a gross positive increase in either employment or GDP. This has made it difficult for proponents to justify the continuation of the policies. Dr. Koo specifically examines the case of the recent 15 year Japanese recession to make his point. This he does well by providing considerable empirical evidence for his views. He makes his argument very convincingly. As a result this is must read book for any serious student of macroeconomics. Considering the fact that the developed world's economies are facing a similar debt problem Dr. Koo's arguments need to be seriously and closely examined.

Despite its strengths, Dr. Koo's framework does have weaknesses. The most important of these, by far, involves the accumulation of debt. Dr. Koo proscribes expansionary fiscal policy to offset the private sectors debt reduction but the million dollar question becomes how long can this continue? Is there a point at which public sector debt accumulation reaches the point where it proves counterproductive? This is a very important question as Japan's GDP to debt ratio, at the time of the latest printing of this book, was about 220%. Authors such as Rogoff (see his "This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly"), in their research, posit that when debt levels reach about 80% of GDP fiscal policy becomes less efffective. Hence a very important question, very relevant to Dr. Koo's framework, is when does debt reach a limit at which it can limit the use of fiscal policy. This is question that needs to be, simultaneously, answered for Dr. Koo's framework to be applied in real life policy framework over a long term period.

Interesting Implications
By Christopher Wolfe
I think this book adds an interesting dimension to macroeconomic thinking. The concept that a negative net worth will make businesses and individuals unresponsive to monetary policy (as they repay debt) has negative implications for aggregate demand. The prescription for fiscal stimulus seems sound, but Koo never describes what happens when governments themselves become insolvent (he just proves that no stimulus leads to higher deficits, without talking much about when government debt is unsustainable). In light of the current Eurozone crisis this is an unfortunate gap.

The book is written in an engaging style, although it is a bit repetitive. The discussion focuses mostly on the historical data necessary to prove the validity of the ideas and the implication of the ideas for policy. With such significant implications for macroeconomic models it is unfortunate that a new or adjusted macroeconomic model was not provided. Overall I really enjoyed this book, I just wish I understood all of its implications.
