Excellent For The Novice Special Event Manager

I was actually looking for a book about the organising of events with small groups of clients, up to 10 and at most 20 people. This was not what I was looking for....However it instilled a lot of new ideas in my crainium that I was able to carry over into my daily line of work when organising presentations to clients and events with clients.
This book was definately written for the novice special event manager in mind. It deals mainly with the staging of large events such as concerts, olympics, and charity events. They introduce the main stages of special events, problems that can occur, risk involved in taking on a special event, making sure you do your demographics homework to estimate the success of the event, chosing the venue, using television and radio for publicity to increase visitation, making a profit, security before, during after the event, the finale, closing down the event.
Even if you are organising events for a small number of participants, I highly recommend reading this book.

It's not what its cracked up to be.

The book provides you with cursory information and skims over specifics and details. It is not, in my opinion, a complete guide but more of a checklist or overview of special event management. In addition, there is not much to glean from the successful strategies that are showcased, because these too, are not indepth; the book does not really say how they were successful, just that they were successful. It is definitely not for someone doing research on entering this field.

Contains short passages about each facet of event managment. Book is targeted at readers planning large-scale (50,000+ people) events, but much of it is applicable to all types of events. Not a great read, and definitely not the only book to own on event mgmt and marketing, but nontheless it serves as an excellent refrence for specific topics and questions, especially for beginners.

Allison Travers, has done nothing but salivate and dream about two men- shocked and aroused. She has to tamp down the lust. The fact that a horrible man wants to crush her hopes, it's just not an option. Allison has to also fend off the unwanted advances of Mr. Matthews. She will find running isn't the answer either. Quinn and Porter have seen and they are on the same page. They only want to make her theirs forever. The fact that one man has her running scared only makes them work that much harder. To make her their Christmas bride! Vanessa Vale has gold in this holiday treasure. Would definitely recommend Bridgewater ménage to anyone looking for sexy, decadent reading!

Not a super Christmasy story so if you aren't into a little season cheer with your hot cowboys....don't be put off by his short hot story. It is snowing and they do unwrap a present. Allison Travers not only finds both Mr. Quinn and Mr. Porter attractive..... She pictures them both when she is alone in her attic bedroom. She is being treate to marry Mr. Matthews, the man spreading rumors that were so not true.... however, she only wants Quinn and Porter.......she is a Bridgewater Ranch Man's, opps I mean Men's dream. She finds herself running away and then found by Quinn and Porter and the Sherriff and they haul her to jail!

This book was picked for me in a pick it for me challenge. This was a short quick read that was ok and that I wish was longer. This was book five in this series. Allison Travers is in love with two men Quinn and Porter. Allison has rejected all of the advances of an unwanted suitor Mr. Matthews. But he is not happy in the slightest about this and he spreads some nasty rumors around town about her. When Allison hears of this she is so upset and to avoid any and all embarrassment, she decides she has to leave town so she boards the stage coach on her way to a new life. But when Quinn and Porter hear of Allison being pushed out of town, they are so angry, they know they will do everything to keep her hear as there's so they will finally make their move After two long years of waiting, and courting her slowly, they have to the bull by the horns and make her their bride. Although I liked this book I felt that it moved way too fast. The book was well written with no errors in spelling or grammar. I am looking forward to reading more books in this series.

Miles (Jack Kerouac: King of the Beats, etc.), who has been intimately involved in the documentation of the Beat scene, focuses here on an international aspect of Beat work: Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and Gregory Corso's escape from "the conformism and Puritanism of fifties America" during the six years (1957-1963) they lived at a cheap hotel on Paris's Left Bank. During this period, the three pursued such now-famous creative endeavors as "Kaddish," Naked Lunch and "Bomb." Their important work during this time, particularly the "cut-up" method pioneered by Burroughs, had an important formative influence on the next generation of artists, according to Miles. Part scholarly study and part gossip-fest, this account traces the aesthetic, sexual and social goings-on in Paris: "Within the shelter of the Beat Hotel," Miles writes, "they had mapped out many of the paths that the 'sixties generation' was to actually follow: the recreational use of drugs and experiments with psychedelics..., investigations into magic and mysticism..., gay rights and sexual freedom , the legalization of 'pornography' and challenges to obscenity laws." The hotel on rue Git-le-Coeur, closed for nearly four decades now, still symbolizes the fruitful ground of collaborative creation among the Beats. The significance of this period in Paris for the Beats may be slightly exaggerated by Miles to justify this book-length study, but those interested in the lives of these cult figures will most likely forgive such overdetermination in the interests of learning in an entertaining narrative about important writers now considered American literary heroes. The cheap rooming house at nine rue Git-Le-Coeur became known as the Beat Hotel after several Beat writers made it their home in Paris. In this interesting blend of sexual gossip and literary scholarship, Miles, author of full-length biographies of Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac, paints a vivid picture of literary life along the Left Bank in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He recounts not only the Beat writers' creative interactions with one other but their relations with such Frenchmen as Maurice Girodias, publisher of the Olympia Press, and Henri Michaux, an author who shared their fascination with the use of drugs to heighten consciousness. Miles also documents the influences of a number of European writers on the Beats, including Andr Breton, Louis-Ferdinand C line, and Sergei Esenin. Finally, he is particularly good at exploring the collaboration between Brion Gysin and Burroughs that led to their famous cut-up method. This is fun reading, especially for those steeped in the Beats. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.

A long letter from an honest "fan", Barry Miles.

At first I thought that this book would be just that...a love letter, and along one, from an affected fan, considering how much of an insider Barry Miles was with the beats. it is all that, to some degree, but it is also an extensive and accurate review of the time surrounding a very important and often overlooked period of international social development that cannot be left out of the cannon of history for its significance in who we are today socially, morally, philosophically, and even religiously. While many would regard these beat figures with a distrusting eye, for many good reasons, this text is also insightful into the "why" the times developed the way they were. The disaffected generation had it's roots, and most of them...in Paris...where here. After all, experimentation requires a Petri dish to see how something grows outside of its normal environment. The kinds of experimentation that took place in the late 50s and early 60s could not have been staged in America.

I don't like this book for the same reason that the author likes it himself. I simply like it because it is well-written and detailed....and...well, honest.

One-star hotel -- five-star book!

The goings on in this decrepit old Paris Hotel, run by an old French lady who cooked Cassoulets for the guests, were astounding. A gathering point for starving artists, especially planetary beatniks, we discover that the unbridled use of hard drugs and graphic homosexuality were a lot more common than Eisenhower would have let us in America think! *.*

This book is a hoot but I want to say up front that it was seriously well-researched by the author. It's predominantly about some well-known, perhaps infamous, American Beats, most of whom (in this hotel anyway) were bisexual drug users. There were also other 'artists' from various places in the world who either lived in The Beat Hotel (the hotel really didn't even have an official name), or they 'visited' as guests of residents for varying lengths of time.

The peccadillos of these characters defy sanity. There's scrying, crying, heroin use, singing, pornography generation, speculating on psychedelic inventions, poetry readings, and tons of all manner of sex.

William Burroughs seems to be the main guy in this life adventure -- we hear of the untimely death of his wife (at another location) as Burroughs was smashed, playing "William Tell" with her for the entertainment of the equally drunken and high guests, ultimately putting a bullet in her forehead. He was never arrested for this incident.

The chief guy whom we expect to find lodged firmly in The Beat Hotel never made it: Jack Kerouac. But pretty much every one of his dubious associates made at least a visit.

This book is well-written -- a real page-turner and quite hilarious. It matters not if the reader is gay, straight, or anywhere in-between sexually... you'll much enjoy this book. And, if ever there was a clear example of 'truth being stranger than fiction', this one is it.

Twenty-six year old Katie Brenner has decided to reinvent herself. Having been raised by her down-to-earth and protective dad on a farm in Somerset, for years she has dreamed of becoming a chic Londoner. Now she shares a small and unprepossessing flat with two roommates, and works for a pittance at Cooper Clemmow, a "branding and strategy" agency. It is too bad that Katie (who calls herself Cat) must answer to the stylish and sophisticated Executive Creative Director Demeter ("De-meeee-ter") Farlowe, a dismissive and scatterbrained genius who is known for her conceit, self-centeredness, and insensitivity. Things look up when Katie meets Alex Astelis, a handsome, funny, and charming hunk. However, Katie happiness is short-lived. She finds out that Alex is Demeter's boss, and rumor has it that the two are an item.

Sophie Kinsella's "My (not so) Perfect Life" is an engrossing tale of a good-hearted, intelligent, creative, and self-deprecating Cinderella who yearns to go to the ball (in her case, to be accepted among trendy Londoners). In addition, she would like Prince Charming to fall in love with her. When Katie's prospects take an unexpected nosedive, she temporarily shelves her ambitions and returns to her rural roots. Back with her dad and his partner, she learns the value of being true to herself; reaching out to others; resisting the false lure of designer labels and other status symbols; and embracing those who genuinely care for her. She also finds out that appearances can be deceiving. "Having it all” may be an illusion.

Sounds corny, no? Fortunately, the clever dialogue, off-beat characters, and zany plot machinations are lively, engaging, and frequently hilarious. Kinsella's accomplished storytelling has so much zest, warmth, and sweetness that readers should be captivated by "My (not so) Perfect Life," a breezy and heartwarming fairy tale.

Kinsella explores female relationships in London .. and on the farm .. lovely, fun and charming

When one needs absolute escapism, with its charming surreal lives, there is no one better than Sophie Kinsella. In this lively tale, 'Cat' is finally living her dream life. She's moved from the family farm in Somerset to London! Where she has a job! And flatmates! Yes, she is a naif who is maybe a tad too 'on', but she also has talent. She's funny but not a fool, a young woman ready for her first real love .. or first true heartbreak. I liked that Cat was more concerned about her family and her career than about fashion. She had a nice friendly first person voice and throughout the book we watch her learn and grow. But at the same time it's lively and charming, a fun read.

Cat is the lowest of the low at a design firm .. but she's determined to make friends and present her ideas to her sort-of idol, her boss Demeter. We see Demeter through Cat's eyes and we also see the relationship between the two women change and grow, which is nice. (I'm not sure that the author has explored this relationship before, at least not in the Kinsella books, and I liked it.)

The commute is an hour and forty minutes .. and her flatmates are nightmares .. but Cat thinks she can push through to success. And then something horrible happens and then something enlightening and then .. It is a formula that works for Kinsella who, despite the predictible layout renders a charming story with authentic characters and protagonists you can root for. There are scenes that make you laugh out loud. It is a classic Kinsella book and I cheer whenever I hear another has come out.

slick light entertainment

Readers of this rather long piece of fluff will learn the word "glamping." Yes, this is a thing -- glamorous camping. When you're glamping, there's no tent to pitch, no sleeping bag to unroll, no fire to build. Glamping is a way to experience the great outdoors without sacrificing luxury.

So it's our usual Sophie Kinsella protagonist, feisty, determined, cute as a button Katie from a farm in Somerset trying to make it in a branding company in London. Squished into a tiny flat, enduring a horrific commute in her high heels and trying to scrape enough money together to eat are the least of Katie's problems. She longs to rebrand herself as "Cat" and live the cool London life she's always dreamed of -- but the reality is very different and making things much worse, she has a monster boss in the form of Demeter Farlowe, who is written much in the vein of "The Devil Wore Prada."

To make a long story short, Katie is brutally downsized (don't worry, this is not a spoiler, it's on the back cover of the book) and has to retreat and recoups at her farm in rural England where her father is trying to get a new "glamping" business underway. Katie is soon applying the marketing lessons she's learned in London to make it a roaring success. Then the horrible Demeter appears and it's payback time. And flitting through the pages is Katie's love interest, the sexy but not very character-developed Alex.

All this ends as you would expect....and one doesn't need to include spoilers to predict how it will end. But at 430 pages plus, I felt the whole thing was a bit bloated. This is light entertainment -- nothing deep, nothing thought-provoking, just harmless escapist fun. It's well written and put together by an author who is a professional who knows what her audience wants and always delivers it. I enjoyed it -- but I kind of hated myself for doing so.

Rather biased review, insanely proud parent.

Okay, I'm Madeline's dad. You gotta know that this took a huge amount of effort to clarify the mysterious world of wine into graphics that take mere seconds to understand. I couldn't be more proud. It's a lot of fun forcing on it friends and then seeing them light up with instant understanding. The page that explains how to write useful personal wine notes, for example, instantly organizes the way you do your evaluations of wine.

Highly enjoyable!

Such a lovely and well thought out book. The format provides you with building blocks for a better understanding of wine, wine regions, tasting profiles, the storage of wine, food pairings and the book includes flavor wheels for pretty much every varietal you can think of. This is definitely wine novice-friendly guide in that you can skim it for as much info as you care to know... but it's also a great reference for a true aficionado who wants to dig deeper or use it as a quick reference or review. The graphics make the presentation of info easy to grasp and fun to read, and the content is well written. I really like the phonetic help with some of the regions - "Blaufränkisch" wasn't exactly part of my vocabulary before. Using it in a sentence will be MUCH easier now that I have this book. :D

Don't miss the glossary of terms in the back - and the index! Definitely going to get a few more copies for holiday gifts this year.

Educated at Cornell University and the University of Chicago, Prof Chow is a member of the American Philosophical Society and of Academia Sinica and a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the Econometric Society. He is the author of 15 books and over 200 articles, specializing in econometrics, dynamic economics, and the Chinese economy, with which he has a long-standing involvement. Prof Chow has served on several committees on Sino-American economic exchanges and has been an adviser to government figures and institutions in China and Taiwan. He is recognized for his contributions to developing and modernizing economics education in China, where he holds honorary posts at nine universities.

Joseph Mallord William Turner was born in London in 1775. His father was a barber, and his mother came from a family of London butchers. “His speech was recognizably that of a Cockney, and his language was the language of the streets.” As his finest paintings show, his language was also the language of light. Turner’s landscapes—extraordinary studies in light, colour, and texture—caused an uproar during his lifetime and earned him a place as one of the greatest artists in history.

Displaying his artistic abilities as a young child, Turner entered the Royal Academy of Arts when he was just fourteen years old. A year later his paintings appeared in an important public exhibition, and he rapidly achieved prominence, becoming a Royal Academician in 1802 and Professor of Perspective at the Academy from 1807–1837. His private life, however, was less orderly. Never married, he spent much time living in taverns, where he was well known for his truculence and his stinginess with money.

Peter Ackroyd deftly follows Turner’s first loves of architecture, engraving, and watercolours, and the country houses, cathedrals, and landscapes of England. While his passion for Italy led him to oil painting, Turner’s love for London remained central to his heart and soul, and it was within sight of his beloved Thames that he died in 1851. His dying words were: “The sun is God.”

In the second volume of his Brief Lives series, which commenced with a biography of Chaucer, Ackroyd presents another major cultural figure, the English painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851). In straightforward fashion, Ackroyd outlines the career of this remarkable man, who progressed rapidly from his early years as a student at the Royal Academy to prominence as one of England's foremost painters, creating dramatic works in which he explored the glowing effects of light fused with air, water, fire and steam. Turner's paintings, which often approach abstraction, astounded and shocked his critics, causing some to say he was a madman, an assessment reinforced by his eccentric, irascible character. Ackroyd shows how the artist, who never married and lived all his life with his father —though he had secret liaisons and two illegitimate daughters—was obsessed with his art, but was also an astute businessman, opening his own gallery in London when he was only 29, cultivating prosperous patrons and speculating in land and houses, all the while turning out a multitude of dazzling oil paintings, watercolors and engravings. Words About Visuals: A Biography

Peter Ackroyd is a fine writer and continues his Brief Lives Series with this insightful biography of one of England's greatest painters, J.M.W. Turner. But readers beware - this is a book about the artist's life and is not a book to examine the artist's works. But there are plentiful other resources for viewing the magnificent paintings of light that Turner created.

Ackroyd adroitly explores Turner's humble background, elaborating on how this most elegant gentleman of the canvas began as a Cockney lad with little formal education. When he was 14 he entered the Royal Academy and within a year's time he was exhibiting his work! Turner was a man of nature and his misty seascapes and landscapes of England have won him permanent status in the pantheon of great painters. He was fascinated by light and the effect that light has through mists and clouds, storms and tree filtered glades. He had a particular affinity for architecture and his early works are primarily in watercolor and etchings. His experience with oil painting opened with his introduction to Italy.

Ackroyd, with a zest for truthful telling, emphasizes that Turner's private life was spent in the taverns, fathering illegitimate children and maintaining a mistress. Apparently a miser, he was not the rarefied 'gentleman' his paintings would suggest.

This is a fine little biography, filled with the facts about the personal life of Turner and a bit lacking on his artistic influences, but as an adjunct to other volumes on his work, books that neglect to look at the man holding the brush, this succinct 'life' affords important insights. Succinct, engaging biography of a great artist

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775 - 1851) was the foremost landscape painter of his generation, and early on he was recognized as such. Admitted to the Royal Academy of Art at a surprisingly young age, Turner had a significant impact upon his own generation, as well as the generations of artists to follow, including the Impressionists.

In "Turner," author Peter Ackroyd sketches a life of the artist that provides basic information about the man, his family, his career and his major works - short, straightforward and providing enough detailed information to provide some depth and understanding of the collection (including how the collection came to be at the Tate Britain).

The book, in fact, is one of Ackroyd's "brief lives." It is not exhaustive but then it is not meant to be. Instead, it is a chronological overview of its subject that gives an extended outline of his life and work. Other `brief lives" that Ackroyd has done include ones for Sir Isaac Newton and Geoffrey Chaucer. (Ackroyd knows how to do an exhaustive biography - just pick up his "Charles Dickens," published in 1990.)

Don't let the "brief life" description mislead. Ackroyd has done his homework. He pulls from letters, contemporary accounts, the writings of Turner admirer John Ruskin and others, and proceedings of the Royal Academy, among other sources.

In "Turner," Ackroyd presents an artist who produced an astonishing number of works over his lifetime, one who worked almost feverishly - much like Dickens later worked in literature and magazine publishing. Turner and Dickens seem to share another important characteristic - self-awareness of their place in their respective fields and how they wanted to be known after their deaths. And both men were producing significant and important work up to the times of their deaths.

It's a succinct, engaging biography of a great artist.

Too Brief

Peter Ackroyd's BRIEF LIVES:J M W TURNER has only one fault - it is too brief.
I enjoyed reading it very much and came to the end of the book far too quickly. Ackroyd provides a glimpse into the private life of Turner: his habits and faults - like his reputation for thrift and his lack of patience for anything but work and his dearest friends.
The illustrations are very good and revealing. The illustrated profile of Turner by John Ruskin is excellent and reveals as much as any words can.
Yes, this book is a good buy and a good read for the Turner aficionados like myself.
