About the Author

About the Editors

Francis T. Cullen is Distinguished Research Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati. He is a Past President of both the American Society of Criminology and the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences. In 2010, he received ASC's Edwin H. Sutherland Award.

Robert Agnew is Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology at Emory University. He is the inventor of the influential "general strain theory." He is a Past President of the American Society of Criminology.

Pamela Wilcox is Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati. She is noted for developing "multicontextual opportunity theory." Her recent publications include The Oxford Handbook of Criminological Theory.

Super interesting...

This book covers the many theories for crime; such as, why some people commit crime, and why others don't. The chapters are not very long, which makes the reading and information easy to process. I like these fairly short chapters just for the fact that some of these theories are packed with information. Great read. I rented this book from Amazon, but now I wish I would have purchased it for a reference.

The book was in superb condition. A great read if one is interested in the psychological theories of crime. Sort of behavior analysis type foundation and it was very enlightening if one has an open mind and is willing to look at different aspects of things they already assume.

About the Author
David Jordan is a Senior Lecturer in the Defence Studies Department, King's College London, at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham. His previous publications include Battle of the Bulge (2003) and The Fall of Hitler's Reich: Germany's Defeat in Europe, 1943-45 (2004).

James D. Kiras is Associate Professor at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, Air University, United States Air Force. He is the author of Special Operations and Strategy: From World War II to the War on Terrorism (2006) and was awarded The Air Education Training Command civilian 'Educator of the Year'award for 2006-7.

David J. Lonsdale is a Lecturer in Strategic Studies at the University of Hull. His publications include The Nature of War in the Information Age: Clausewitzian Future (2004) and Alexander the Great: Lessons in Strategy (2007).

Ian Speller is a Lecturer in the Department of History at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He also lectures in defence studies at the Irish Defence Forces Military College and in maritime strategy at the UK Defence Academy and at the National Maritime College of Ireland. He is the author of The Role of Amphibious Warfare in British Defence Policy, 1945-56 (2001) and the editor of The Royal Navy and Maritime Power in the Twentieth Century (2005).

Christopher Tuck is a Lecturer in the Defence Studies Department, King's College London, based at the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Shrivenham. He co-authored, with Ian Speller, Amphibious Warfare: The Theory and Practice of Amphibious Warfare in the Twentieth Century (2001).

C. Dale Walton is a Lecturer in International Relations and Strategic Studies at the University of Reading. Among his publications are The Myth of Inevitable US Defeat in Vietnam (2002) and Geopolitics and the Great Powers in the Twenty-First Century (2007).

Grade 1-5–From Independence Hall to Uncle Sam, this colorful book presents a mostly lighthearted look at familiar symbols of the United States, describing places, objects, treatises, and American holidays. Most of the subjects are given double-page treatments. Featuring soft edges and textured shading, the pastel and colored-pencil illustrations highlight details presented in the narrative. For example, a man is shown chiseling souvenir pieces from Plymouth Rock while his companion catches the bits in her apron. Asides help move the text along, as when a "Ding-dong THUNK!!" is heard when the Liberty Bell is rung with an off-key sound. Cool factoids are the rule here as well (e.g., on Mount Rushmore, Washington's nose is 20 feet long). The section on the Pledge of Allegiance mentions the "Under God" controversy. Myths are dispelled: "There is no proof that George Washington asked Betsy Ross…to sew the first [flag]." While most descriptions are lengthy and contain enough detail for reports, the holidays are dismissed in single paragraphs. On the final page, the World Trade Center is described as a national symbol, because remembering "…lets us turn an act of hate into a symbol of hope." The list for further reading is current, with most titles written after 2000. More in-depth and upbeat than Delno C. and Jean M. Simple, Informative, WONDEFUL!

I love this book! This book is chalked full of 50 symbols/landmarks of America. Each great symbol/landmark is covered in a two page spread filled with witty informative text and beautiful colored penciled illustrations. A must have for every home library as far as I am concerned. I would say perfect for a 1st grader+ Some of the symbols it covers: plymouth rock, independence hall, the white house, capital building, supreme court, washington monument, lincoln memorial, statue of liberty, ellis island, mount rushmore, the flag, liberty bell, uncle sam, bald eagle, seal, decleration of independence, constitution & bill of right, national anthem, pledge of allegiance, and American holidays. This book has it all & even has some interesting facts that I as an adult did not know!

Amazing Book about American History

My daughter is in 1st grade and absolutely LOVED this book. It is a non-fiction account of many of the important documents (Declaration of Independence, etc.), monuments (Washington, etc.), and events of the early days of United States. It gives plenty of information (there were 3 whole pages on the D of I) that could be useful as a resource for a school history project. The writing is factual, but my daughter, who is 7, was able to read it all and was enthralled by it. The illustrations are also wonderful. After checking it out 3 times from her school library, she is now putting this book on her wish-list for Christmas!

This workbook is a great tool for teens!

This is an excellent book for working with teenagers with challenges in their lives. Their are some mature topics-- such as aids and homosexuality issues but all discussed in good taste. If you are working with families as I do, you need to know your family's belief system and run book by parents before introducing to teen--I do that with any new materials I plan to utilize. I think every topic is totally relevant but some parents' religious beliefs or culture may be offended by a few stories but as far as I am concerned this workbook gets a five star rating. Oddly it doesn't have page numbers- though it does have an index that has page number divisions. I'll just add the page numbers by hand-- so no big deal to me! I love it!

MUST READ!

Brilliant! If you have a teen (or pre-teen) boy, this is a MUST have. It's got some really great advice...many things as parents we try to tell our teenager, but it doesn't get through to them. This is an excellent way to get some of those great ideas and advice to your teen boy, without it being "ugh, mom and dad AGAIN!". Highly recommended. Have purchased a copy for each teenage boy in our house. Will buy a 3rd when the time comes.

Good for Preteens and Young Teens

I gave this book to my twin 14 year-old boys and asked them to read through several sections. I don't know exactly which sections they read, but both of them spent a decent amount of time with the book (that means an hour for one of them and a couple of hours for the other). Now, telling their mom what they thought of the book seemed like a dance for them. They didn't want to act like they had learned anything (because of course, 14 year-olds know everything), so both of them said it was kind of common sense. Well, maybe the chapter on wearing deodorant and brushing your teeth were, but I think that there were a lot of chapters on topics they hadn't even considered, like grilling a steak, changing a tire, and finding a stud in the wall!

I also had my 24 year-old daughter read through it, and I read several chapters. We both thought that it had great topics and that it was a good manual to have around so that you could learn things at just the right time. We did think that several chapters were very shallow -- especially in the section on impressing girls. It includes topics such as talking to a girl for the first time, planning dates, and meeting the girls' parents. I thought it was lacking in the areas of how to treat a girl with respect (for example, it never even mentions opening doors for her), ideas of what to do on a first date (such as determining what she is interested in), or double dating etiquette. As a mom, I was also a bit disappointed in the the social skills and manners section. It talks about how to make a bed, but doesn't deal with manners items such as eating appropriately, phone and text etiquette, or tips on maintaining a conversation. I would have appreciated a section on how to find out more details about things -- who to talk to or what books to read.

This is a good intro manual for preteen and young teen boys, but I would recommend a detailed follow up for those beyond 13 or 14 with much more information about character-building, leadership traits, common courtesy, and relationship skills.

Very helpful!

Anything and everything you ever wanted to know is in here! Although it says for men, I think it has a lot of information that is useful for everyone. Some stuff I was really interested in, such as the meats.

We started off with girls and dating. I like Jonathan's style, he makes it fun, he does everything step by step and then he adds a fun fact at the end. He makes it a bit hilarious at times as well.

Then we into social skills and manners, work ethics, money management, grooming and clothing. I really think he covered so many excellent topics. I think when boys leave home this would be a wonderful book to give them, so when they say, what did mom say about ironing my shirts, oh yea, here we go, step by step. Awesome information. Oh yea and I won't burn my shirt maybe as much!!!

Then we went into sports, every sport, how to throw a football, basketball, baseball, play golf then on to cars and then cooking. Finally we ended with tools.

This is such a fabulous resource. We must come up with something similar for girls. I really believe this is an excellent resource that they will come to rely on often until they get the hang of being on their own! Their friends might even borrow it!
