About the Author
Lise Menn, PhD, Professor Emerita, University of Colorado, has taught courses in linguistics, language development, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics at the University of Colorado, Boulder and other schools since 1977. She has carried out collaborative research on aphasia with colleagues in many countries and has presented lectures, workshops, and short courses on the practical value of thinking psycholinguistically about language learning and language disorders in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, China and Taiwan, Finland, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

specifically aphasia. The book demonstrates how basic
language and reading skills are acquired, and ends with

Great Introduction to a generative analysis of language

For the longest time, I have been interested in generative linguistics, but I couldn't understand principles such as Extended Projection Principle (EPP) and the distinction of phrases (e.g., CP, IP, and DP). I like reading a lot of current published work in linguistics framed in Minimalism, so this book has really helped me understand the current concerns in linguistics by it explaining concepts such as from X-Bar (that was framed in Government and Binding) before preceding onto more current modes of analysis. Furthermore, it seems to help me analyze language too.

Hi Oxwood. Thank you for taking the time to comment on the book. As one of its co-editors, I'll try to address your points.

- Instrumentals were omitted to narrow the millions of choices. It's not a decision I necessarily support, but there was a rationale behind it.

- The index - while unconventional - is perfectly comprehensible, and the arranging of artists by first initials will be instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with iTunes.

- While I wouldn't dispute the worth of The Allman Brothers, they weren't a big deal in Britain (where the book was produced), so I'm afraid they didn't make the shortlist. (However, our US publishers didn't suggest them either.)

- The ten artists that you've highlighted are all represented in the book; some with, in our view, more interesting choices from the same album (e.g. "War Pigs," from Paranoid, "When the Levee Breaks," from Led Zeppelin IV, and "Bring the Noise" from It Takes A Nation of Millions...).

- I take full responsibility for including "Amazing" and not campaigning for "Dream On." As a long-time Aerosmith fan, I think "Amazing" is a much better song!

- Inevitably, given the millions of available choices, we were never going to satisfy every reader. However, as the book ranges from commercial smashes to cult hits, and from Mississippi to Mali, there's plenty to discover. I would urge you to listen to Elvis Presley's "Tomorrow is a Long Time" and Oumou Sangare's "Diaraby Nene" - both featured in the book, and both songs that I'm very happy to have heard before I die!

Great Resource for Exploring New Songs and Favorites

This book has a similar look and feel for those familiar with 1001 Albums with great pictures, nice format and layout, and interesting song and artist background. I found this to be a great resource for (re-)exploring both well known songs and lesser known nuggets. The selections cover a broad range of periods and styles. Many are obvious choices such as Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode, Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit.

I'd caution against expecting either the 1001 or "10,001 to Download" to be a definitive "best" song list. The variety of editors bring some great choices together, however such a task is just not possible, nor the intent, but this does mean that you will find some expected songs missing. Not making either list includes some of my personal favorites from Michael Jackson (Billie Jean), the Rolling Stones (Gimme Shelter), though about 30 Stones' songs make the 10,001, or Allman Brothers (Midnight Rider), or Joy Division (New Dawn Fades), while room for five Spice Girls songs on the 10,001 seemed generous in this context.

All in all, this doesn't knock it down from 5-stars for me, I know and listen to the songs I like without this book, but it gives me plenty to explore and enjoy, which is just what I had hoped for.

It's been five years since Robert Dimery compiled the collection "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" and now with the music world returning to its roots as a singles based medium, it's a perfect time for this series to surface the best songs of all time.

This completely subjective report (as Dimery gladly admits) is a veritable jukebox in book form. Spanning the decades from the pre-50's to the 00's, Dimery and his contributors have compiled a list ranging from the obvious (R.E.S.P.E.C.T.) to the obscure (Captain Beefheart's "Big Eyed Beans from Venus") to hundreds of musical slices in between.

Each of the selections are accompanied by a story of the history, the behind the scenes and/or the influence the song had on others. In addition to full credits, there are boxes on certain entries that indicate cover versions and which songs influenced which others. In all cases, the original releases provide the template, with later credits (samples, etc) added where appropriate. There is also an intro by famed Bowie producer, Tony Visconti.

The book concludes with a list of 10,000 songs (listings only) that you must download before you die. Though the book has a bit of an international lean in places (many songs from the UK, France, Africa, etc. are simply unknown in the states) it serves as both a treasure trove of great songs you may have forgotten from the past, as well as a jumping off point for a wide berth of new musical territory to explore for quite a while. Pure fun.

The body building diet works!

This book is excellent! I have been wanting to start exercising more and build more muscle and this book has taught me exactly how to do that. The author has listed different types of food and nutrients your body needs if you want to be a body builder. I have tried the tips listed in this book and I have already noticed a huge difference in my body after one week! I highly recommend this book, it is very informative!

As a self-described "champion of small uglies," English writer Gerald Durrell (1925-1995) devoted his life to writing and the preservation of wildlife, from the Mauritius pink pigeon to the Rodriques fruit bat. My Family and Other Animals was intended to embrace the natural history of the Greek island of Corfu, but ended up as a delightful account of his family's experiences that were, according to him, "rather like living in one of the more flamboyant and slapstick comic operas."

As a 10-year-old boy, Gerry left England for Corfu with "all those items that I thought necessary to relieve the tedium of a long journey: four books on natural history, a butterfly net, a dog, and a jam-jar full of caterpillars all in imminent danger of turning into chrysalids." Durrell's descriptions of his family and its many eccentric hangers-on (he stresses that "all the anecdotes about the island and the islanders are absolutely true") are highly entertaining, as is the procession of toads, scorpions, geckos, ladybugs, glowworms, octopuses, the puppies Widdle and Puke, and the Magenpies. This is a lovely book.

He was a passionate and persuasive advocate of the need for the conservation of animals and plants and their habitats. Written by the youngest of the Durrell brothers, this gem recreates with fantasy and humor five years of adventure that the family of five (following their early years in India and the death of their father) spent on Corfu before World War II. We see the budding naturalist, who would later become a distinguished figure in animal welfare and conservation as he first discovers, creates and then oversees an idyllic world inhabited by dogs, exotic birds, lizards, snakes and other wildlife. In his escapades young Gerald manages to avoid most formal tutoring and is accompanied by the perfect guide and mentor, an aging Greek father figure who encourages and participates in the mischief that fills these pages. The romps are at times outrageous and past the edge of credibility. But no matter; the fun is shared by all--except for the more famous and judgmental eldest brother, and barely noticed by their sweetly indulgent if also clueless mother. The short chapter called "The Rose-Beetle Man" contains one of the most beguiling and delightful creations to be found anywhere in early 20th century literature.

Corfu Trilogy - a Treat for your literary sense

These stories are incredible and because of them i traveled to Greece four times and painted for weeks on end. The books were written in the 50s, and i thought when i went in the 80s that the people would be different, but they were as he described in the three stories of living on Corfu. The food and music were also as he described . I am collecting first editions of Durrells's books if they have any story about that time just before WWII., for my library and i have introduced his writing to many other people.

Small book but immensely wonderful story

This is one of my all time favorite books. However I was unhappily surprised by the small size of the book and the number of typos. Perhaps I missed the size description when shopping but the typos are inexcusable. All that said I am happy to own a new copy that should last the many re-readings to come.

Great book...Cases are more difficult than the real test.

Used this book in preparation for oral boards and found it helpful. Overall, i would rate the cases on the moderate to difficult end when compared to actual test cases. The book is similar to Top3 and AuntMinnie atlas, which are also "classic" board review books.

EXCELLENT review book... Mainly to be used toward the latter years of residency. The cases are well presented and represented, and the accompanying text is to the point and riddled with high yield facts, appropriately divided into clinical and radiological signs... Further reading suggestions at the end of each case, help complete the task.

All in all one of these must-have books, that actually teaches you a way to think!!!
