Susan Brigden's new work is the fifth entry in the nine-volume Penguin History of Britain, a series that features a number of leading lights (Kishlansky, Colley, Cannadine, etc.), and it provides a spirited introduction to this fertile period. Political and religious themes predominate, as befits a student of the late Sir Geoffrey Elton, but the author avoids the brilliant turgidity of her former teacher. Operating within the series' standard conceptual framework (dynastic change shaping the structure, right up until the fall of Mrs. Thatcher), Brigden writes with mature and engaging sobriety. She is fully conscious of the oppressive potential of English government, "whose superiority was "evident only to the English," and gives substantial attention to the disasters that befell the Irish. Indeed, her claim to speak "more of kings, and queens, than cabbages" is a little self-deprecating. The plight of the poor, prone to disease and catastrophic famine, is rarely far from the surface; astonishingly, we learn that one-third of the population of Norwich died during a plague epidemic in 1579. Equal attention is paid to popular religion to the lost world of English Catholicism, witch crazes and mystery plays and to family life and friendship. This is a well-balanced if fairly traditional history and will make for an ideal textbook when it appears in paper.

This is a splendid piece of scholarship that engages the reader's imagination; Brigden's (history, Lincoln Coll., Oxford) extensive research has paid off in spades. While readers may find themselves running to the OED to check words and concepts long forgotten, the chase is worth it. The title hints at the lost worlds of this dramatic era in Britain, beginning with the early years of Henry VII and carrying forward through the fascinating dynastic and religious struggles of Henry VIII; Mary, Queen of Scots; and Elizabeth I. The book covers not only England but Ireland, Scotland, and Wales as well, and scholars of this period will come away with refreshing insights into this remarkable period. General readers will be equally delighted because the writing is so fluid and accessible. The chapter on social life and customs, "Family and Friends," could stand alone as a single book on Tudor times. Highly recommended for all academic and larger public libraries. Detail you may or may not want

Not a page turner, but if you have an existing interest in the subject, worth the effort. Much of the book concerns the peripheral subjects... Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Holland, France, Spain, the Pope. The common people of England are also examined, as they struggled with famine, plague, loss of land, and the shifting tsunamis of the religious world. Thus the motives of the powerful people around the English throne in the 1500s are brightly illuminated. Those "common knowledge" high points of history are brought into sharper focus by the detail provided of occurrences between the landmark events.

I carried it around!

Others have written that this book is not a page-turner, but I respectfully disagree. Once started, I took this book with me everywhere I went so that I could continue reading every time a few spare minutes came along. Brigden's work is so carefully organized that my reading didn't seem to suffer at all from my piecemeal approach. I agree that there is a not a lot of heavy didacticism in Brigden's analysis, but I appreciate having the wealth of information she presents organized in such a way that I can readily see connections between people and events and draw my own conclusions.

Wow! This is a great history of one of the most exciting periods of english history. Brigden does a fantastic job integrating politics, religion, popular culture, discoveries and exploration and so on. She has a natural talent for compelling narrative and detailed description. Buy this book, and you won't be sorry!

To put things broadly, this small collections by Ranciere is essentially a critique of "The Society of the Spectator." Ranciere's dialectical aesthetics of politics employs nuanced "aesthetic regimes" in order to unearth internal logics of political/aesthetic transformation. In particular, his comments in `The Intolerable Image,' go a long way in launching a critique of the work of art as a dispositif of visibility. That is, the very notion that the image can serve as the simultaneous link between representation, knowledge, and action is revealed as a groundless politics. A highly thoughtful and rich text.

Ranciere on art and the political.

This is a good book and the translation reads well. I don't know where the third essay in this book comes from ("Aesthetic Separation, Aesthetic Community"). It is not from Le spectateur émancipé. It is not indicated in the book, but it here replaces the third essay in the French edition and that essay, "Les paradoxes de l'art politique" which is not here. While there is an essay entitled "The Paradoxes of Political Art" in the collection "Dissensus," that does not seem to be the same essay as the one from Le spectateur émancipé.

But aside from this bit of confusion, the text is great and the different essays still cover roughly the same territory of thought. The "Aesthetic Separation, Aesthetic Community" essay is in fact particularly enlightening for outlining his understanding of the aesthetics of knowledge. The first essay, "The Emancipated Spectator," is another highlight in terms of developing Rancière's thinking on aesthetics and politics.

Although the book is written well, it is somewhat more brief than expected. Additionally, considering all of the radiology websites that now exist, it didn't explain much. I think for a medical student or junior resident doing a brief rotation would be appropriate for this book.

This book is great to have by your side while reading Brain MRI or CT. Its a quick reference guide with very good differential diagnosis. Pictures are great! Has been an asset to my Neuroradiology rotation. I recommend it to any resident.

6 oz (170 g) Practice Buttercream Icing

#46 or #48 basketweave tip
12-in (30.5 cm) flex pastry bag or lightweight pastry bag
8-in (20.32 cm) round Styrofoam attached to a 10-in (25.40 cm) cardboard round

Although basket weaving is an old-world technique, it is still commonly used and produces a stunning cake without a lot of effort. Amateurs and pros alike can give a tailored look to a cake with basket weave. With a little effort, your basket weave cake can be a work of art.

Basket weaving can be accomplished with several types of icing tips. Although the #46 and #48 are popular tips and often used to create this look, you can use round tips (#7, #8, #9, #10, #12), star tips (#16, #18, #20, #21, #22), or even petal-shaped tips (#101, #102, #103, or #104).

I have been long awaiting the arrival of this second edition book by the most talented Toba Garrett, and it has been worth the wait! Though Chef Garrett has published other fine books in the baking field, the first edition book of "Professional Cake Decorating" published in 2006, had been the one that came initially from the requests of her students; something to consolidate the overwhelming mountains of teaching in this field. The 2006 edition encompassed the techniques of cake decorating, though much can be used in other areas of culinary decorating (cookies, cupcakes, etc). Having the first edition book well-worn, I feel confident in my opinion that this second edition far exceeds all that she offered in the first.

She has updated and reorganized this excellent teaching tome, by steamlining some aspects and intensifying others. With the initial target audience of students, those who are comfortable in their cake decorating skills, as well as a patient beginner, can certainly embrace the joyous challenges as she takes you through a myriad of more detailed lessons and techniques. To compliment the serious attention that she gives this artform, there is an accompanying instructor's manual as well.

The photography is crisp and clear, the drawing clean, the text straight forward. Charts, colored and B&W photographs, with the steps needed to achieve the end results, are given. Having said this, there is an assumption that you have some skill base already. With each lesson, she provides you with the prep/set-up, the instructions, lesson reviews, and even performance tests to help build your confidence by practicing. Each lesson introduction page will list everything you will need to complete that section.

INTERMEDIATE PIPING SKILLS: Buttercream flowers, shells, swags, bows, weaves, etc.

ADVANCED PIPING SKILLS: This was one of my favorite chapters in that I love the Lambeth-style of cake decorating. If you enjoy the overlay or overpiping style, you will love this chapter too. I feel that this is the basics of building your Lambeth abilities. And even if you just want a most elegant and 3-D effect, this is definitely your chapter!

THE ART OF WRITING AND PAINTING: One of the things that I appreciate the most is when a truly talented cake decorator can write! There is nothing more disappointing than seeing writing that is child-like or poorly piped; it ruins a cake (this was a personal frustration in my skills). So to learn, this is an invaluable chapter; using templates she provides, you can quickly learn some of the most beautiful cake "penmanship" and not just block letters. I'm talking calligraphy and cursive in different styles. (She included "Food Color Painting" at the end of this lesson though I felt this would have been better in her Lesson 8 "Design Skills").

ROYAL ICING PIPED FLOWERS: This lesson has about 7 different flowers.

ROYAL ICING DESIGN SKILLS: This chapter is wonderful; you learn design transfer methods which is great for those who aren't good at free-hand design, as well as different embroideries and cornelli lace.

HAND MODELLING SKILLS: Fruit marzipan.

MARZIPAN AND CHOCOLATE MODELING: Marzipan and chocolate animals and roses.

ADVANCED ROYAL ICING PIPING AND DESIGN SKILLS: I am absolutely in love with this chapter; I would have bought this book just for this chapter alone. For myself, it had been very hard to find anything solid in Lambeth-style education related to Joseph Lambeth; he was an incredibly gifted man who was a Master of this delicate, layered old school work. The only person I feel is equal to him is Eddie Spence, MBE, who has written a definitive book on this subject called "The Art of Royal Icing". I greatly digress..........this is simply a fantastic chapter that teaches you the intricasies of runouts (flooding) piping, extension work, lace designs, ring designs (love this!), trelliswork, lattice work, and collars. Divine!

ROLLED ICING DESIGN: Working with fondant to drape or decorate a prepped cake.

PASTILLAGE CONSTRUCTION: Making plaques.

GUMPASTE FLOWERS: The basics of flowers.

ADVANCED GUMPASTE FLOWERS: The next level of flowers.

MINI CAKES AND COOKIES: I was expecting mini cakes and a bit more elaborate cookies but this was petit fours and basic cookies. To get a more intense lesson on cookies decorating, I would suggest her book, "The Well-Decorated Cookie".

CAKE and CONFECTIONARY GALLERY: Here's where you put everything together and see how much you learned. The end results of all the lessons rolled into projects.

RECIPES: All kinds of recipes for buttercreams and icings, fondants and pastes, cakes, cookies, curds, and fillings, plus templates, patterns, cutting guides, and alphabets for writing.

This is a wonderful teaching book and if you had to choose between the first and second edition, of course I would suggest this one. There are so many great books out there but when you can get one that has this much detail so that you have everything pretty much laid out for you, I think it would be worth the investment. Peace!

Amazing

This book is so complete that it would probably be the only one you need in your cake library. Some of the 'lessons' are a bit advanced, but then again, the book is called "Professional Cake Decorating". I decorate cakes as a hobby and I'm always looking to learn new ideas and 'tricks of the trade'. If you are like me, this book is essential for you.

Could use more pictures

This book is wonderful- it includes in-depth writing about almost any technique or cake decorating thing you would care to do. The one drawback I have found is that it does not have enough pictures. I am a visual learner, and even pictures of the finished decoration would be helpful. So far, I have just been reading it like a book, and it is sometimes difficult to visualize what she is trying to say. I have the feeling that once I start going through the lessons, I will have a better grip on what she is writing about.
I have worked in a bakery before, so many of the terms are familiar, but the book might read like a textbook to a newbie, which could be another drawback.

Outstanding!

I read this book in one sitting (3hrs) and can now say that I finally understand accounting and financial analysis and am even quite excited by them! The creators of this book bring accounting to life via the art of story-telling and wonderful use of colour / visual aids - the learnings being embedded on multiple layers. I particularly like the fact that they've stayed away from the classic use of RED and BLACK!!

Being in the organisational development field, I recommend this book be made compulsory reading for Managers and Leaders within the corporate arena. To all budding Entrepreneurs this book is a must for your business toolkit.

I understand that there is an associated workshop and I shall be signing up for that and recommending it to my company's CFO.

This book transforms the way accounting is taught!

Wow! - I get it! I finally understand Accounting!!!!

The book uses effective color themes and a simple story (parable) to take the reader through a gradual learning process. Starting off with easy to understand, basic accounting concepts, and gradually moving on to use formal accounting terms and principles like Income statements and Balance Sheets - always applying the simple color concepts to help the reader apply and understand the basic accounting principles.

The second part of the book actually covers financial analysis! So on completion of this book, one has a thorough understanding of accounts in general, income statements and balance sheets AND the ability to analyze the health of a company.

What a wonderful approach to learning and understanding accounting!
