KEITH FERRAZZI is founder and CEO of the training and consulting company Ferrazzi Greenlight and a contributor to Inc., the Wall Street Journal, and Harvard Business Review. Amazing book!

This book is amazing. What I learned from it: When you meet someone for the first time, don't ask them boring questions like where they're from or where they work. Ask what they are passionate about. Then offer to help them, either by doing something for them or connecting them with someone else you know who can help them. Also make a plan for what you want to accomplish, and who you need to meet to accomplish it.

During the past decade a substantial body of experimental data on thermodynamic and transport properties of water has been produced and published by research groups in the USSR, Great Britain, Czechoslovakia, Canada and the United States. This book presents the results of a new and independent correlation of all this new thermodynamic data and all previously existing data. It is a new work to replace the well-known and widely used Keenan and Keyes tables. The tables in this new book are based upon a unique accomplishment. For the first time the whole body of high-quality experimental data on liquid and vapor water has been faithfully represented by a single fundamental equation. From this equation all thermodynamic properties can be calculated for any state. This equation is believed to extrapolate dependably in temperature from the upper limit of precise measurement (about 1500°F) to about 2400°F. Because of the increasing importance to both the practicing engineer and the student of a wide variety of problems that cannot be approximated by steady-flow idealization, internal energies are tabulated for all states: saturated liquid and vapor, compressed liquid, and superheated vapor. A reasonable range of metastable states is covered as extensions of the superheated-vapor and compressed-liquid tables. The Mollier and temperature-entropy charts are extended to substantially higher pressures and temperatures. This book also includes a table for ice-vapor equilibrium, an improved chart of isentropic exponents, charts of Prandtl number, a set of charts of heat capacity of liquid and vapor, and extensive tables of viscosity and thermal conductivity reproduced from the documents of the Sixth International Conference on the Properties of Steam. The book features legible type set by a computer-controlled typesetting machine. This results in accuracy, compactness, and convenience.

During the past decade a substantial body of experimental data on thermodynamic and transport properties of water has been produced and published by research groups in the USSR, Great Britain, Czechoslovakia, Canada and the United States. This book presents the results of a new and independent correlation of all this new thermodynamic data and all previously existing data. It is a new work to replace the well-known and widely used Keenan and Keyes tables. The tables in this new book are based upon a unique accomplishment. For the first time the whole body of high-quality experimental data on liquid and vapor water has been faithfully represented by a single fundamental equation. From this equation all thermodynamic properties can be calculated for any state. This equation is believed to extrapolate dependably in temperature from the upper limit of precise measurement (about 1500°F) to about 2400°F. Because of the increasing importance to both the practicing engineer and the student of a wide variety of problems that cannot be approximated by steady-flow idealization, internal energies are tabulated for all states: saturated liquid and vapor, compressed liquid, and superheated vapor. A reasonable range of metastable states is covered as extensions of the superheated-vapor and compressed-liquid tables. The Mollier and temperature-entropy charts are extended to substantially higher pressures and temperatures. This book also includes a table for ice-vapor equilibrium, an improved chart of isentropic exponents, charts of Prandtl number, a set of charts of heat capacity of liquid and vapor, and extensive tables of viscosity and thermal conductivity reproduced from the documents of the Sixth International Conference on the Properties of Steam. The book features legible type set by a computer-controlled typesetting machine. This results in accuracy, compactness, and convenience.

How About A CD With XML Formatted Data?

Generations of engineers, and not a few chemists and physicists either, have depended on this book as the standard reference for the properties of water.
This is the 1969 edition, and there is no more recent edition. Which should give you some idea of how definitively the authors described their subject.
Perhaps the only suggestion for improvement is for a CD version that has the tables in some XML format that can be easily integrated into a computer program. Notice that this is different from other books which might have a CD version that duplicates the contents of the hardcopy. There, the CD's main advantage might be the ability to have a comprehensive all-word index. Here, where most of the book are tables of numbers, that need is not really relevant. Instead, where there are tables, the best use of CD would be to hold XML formatted tables.

After being captured by the Super Friends Dr. Insano failed to stay current on the Mt.Doom Laboratory/Hideout. As such my self and the other research assistants were locked out by the landlord. As we wait for the writ of reentry to work its way through the court system we are forced to make do without our mainframes, reel to reels and magnetic tapes full of experimental data. In light of our predicament this book is a good back-to-basics compilation of steam data, with enough resolution as to eliminate the need for interpolation in most cases. It doesn't matter if you are a Mad Scientist working on his(or her, MORE GIRLS IN S.T.E.M.S !) next doomsday device, a Mad Grad student working on his/her dissertation on mayhem this book is a God send.

Valuable tool for dispatching thermodynamic problems

I'm not a fan of crunching engineering problems. However, if one can simply the process, I'm all for it.

I've made this purchase on the advice of some colleague's experience and I've benefited the tip. In short, this will help save you from the arduous tasks of interpolating during test situation.

It's arguable that software can iterate and solve faster. Until you are actually running numbers for a company and able to justify a purchased program, I think this book is very handy.

An Observers Delight

Stephan James O'Meara has done it again! In the fashion of his book on Mesier Objects, he has again produced a book that will guide and inform the lover of the night sky armed with a telescope. In chapter one he begins with a story involving an old man and Arcturus which deeply moved me, and later my wife when I read it to her, and which lead naturally into why we observe the night sky so passionately. The bulk of the text, however, is in the second chapter where the author describes each of the 109 Caldwell objects in detail. Each object has a astrophotograph, his eyepeice impression drawing, a finder chart and visual description done in such elegance that everytime I read it I am awed all the more by what I am observing. In addition, Stephan has included interesting historical and astrophysical information about each of the objects. As I observe firsthand these objects with his book on my lap I am amazed at what I can see that I would not have seen without Stephan's guidance. This is a masterpeice for the avid observer! Thanks, Stephan.

"Armchair Astronomers" will love this book!

When Sir Patrick Caldwell-Moore had his list of interesting objects , 109 in all , published in the December , 1995 issue of Sky and Telescope magazine , it became an instant "hit" with the amateur astronomical community. The list "mirrors" the list of Messier objects in number , and offers a real challenge to neophyte "deep sky" observers.
The list compiled by Sir Patrick covers a wide variety of objects , as well as a range of difficulty that makes observation of all items on the list a problematic. Many of the objects are found in the skies of the Southern Hemisphere , adding some spice to the already great challenge. Included are some very attractive star clusters , really awesome bright nebulae , distant galaxies , and many "planetary" nebulae.
Author O'Meara has done an excellent job with this second volume of Deep Sky Companions , better that the first ; many of the objects will probably never be seen by many amateur astronomers unwilling or unable to travel to Australia or South America to see the South Circimpolar Caldwell objects , hence my title to this review!
As in the previous volume on the Messier objects , each entry includes a photograph , a sky chart (too small a scale!) , a sketch made by the author at the eyepiece, and an excellent textual description and astrophysical analysis.
This book is definitely a "must own" for every serious backyard observer. It is not without a few flaws : i.e. the scale of the charts being next to useless , and the somewhat over optimistic description of what the average observer might be able to see.
Still worthy of a strong 4 stars. Recommended!

Great background for the AL Caldwell list

I read this book in great detail when I was running the Caldwell list across several months at a dark sky site in Texas. It was a great resource for understanding why each object was of importance or interest - one of the requirements in reporting the list.

The science behind the speed

This is an excellent book about how NASCAR race cars are engineered to perform like they do. The author is a college Physics professor and the book is written to explain with basic scientific terms and knowledge that the average reader can understand written in a very interesting manner.

The areas discussed include aerodynamics, materials,engines, fuels, tires, shocks, drivetrain and others, and the author spent time with Elliott Sadler and the 19 team both at the shop and the track to help the NASCAR fan understand how things work like they do. I am a long time fan and also an engineer and there was a lot of info that I can use when I give fans pit road and garage tours at Michigan Intl Speedway. This book will help me explain things to the fans in a easy way.

This would also be a great book for a high school aged race car enthusiast/budding engineer to help them understand how school subjects like Physics can have exciting real world applications. I was a big racing fan when I was taking physics in high school and engineering courses in college and the textbook problems we had did not seem very relevant or interesting. A book like this would have made those subjects a lot more fun.
I own many many NASCAR and racing books and this is one of the best. Highly recommended!

I'm not a NASCAR fan by any stretch of the imagination. But this book's title intrigued me. Browsing through it and seeing all the interesting diagrams convinced me that I should buy it and read it. I did and I was not disappointed. The author, a physicist, is a gifted expositor of scientific principles at a level ideal for the general reader. She explains, using many useful analogies (and no mathematics), the finer points involved in building an automobile suitable for racing the NASCAR circuits. The book could just as easily have been entitled "The Science of NASCAR" since sciences other than physics are also involved and explained, e.g., chemistry, metallurgy, aerodynamics, engineering, biology, etc. In addition to the science, the author gives a fascinating overview of some of the dedicated people who are involved in building and racing a potentially winning car as they do their work before, during and after a race. The writing style is clear, authoritative, very accessible and quite engaging. Based on the way this book is written, it can be enjoyed by absolutely anyone, not only science buffs or NASCAR fans.

Don't wait for the movie

This book would translate nicely into a Discovery Channel series. You know, high-interest, science-to-the-masses kind of stuff. Give it a year; it's going to happen! I am a fan of "The Physics Of.." books, and some disappoint: they can be so thorough [read hyper-mathematic] as to resemble homework; or they can be so simplified they read like a children's book. Most land somewhere in between. Take, for instance,Adair's book on the Physics of Baseball: it's fantastic, but I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone. It contains more mathematics than the average Joe (or Jane) is equipped to handle. But this book, The Physics of NASCAR, follows the Goldilocks Principle: it's just right. Not too pithy, not too watered down. High interest, easy access, entertaining insights. If you like popular science, you'll enjoy this book. Personally, I love the way the author pulls in characters from the NASCAR family. It gives the book personality! She does a great job with the science as well. There were a couple of bobbles here and there, but she covered a LOT of ground. This book is really a text in applied physics (and biology and chemistry), sans the quantitative rigor. I would love to adapt it to my high school curriculum--it would certainly grab my students' attention. If you teach physics at the high school or college level, this book is the perfect supplement to a course on physics for non-majors, or simply a means to raise the interest/relevance level for the concepts you teach. Buy it. If it doesn't work out, then re-sell it on Amazon's Marketplace. Now there's a win-win situation! Hope that helps...
