Cooper was one of the first bomber pilots in World War I. After the war, he helped form the famous Kosciuszko Squadron in battle-torn Poland. He then turned his attention to producing documentary films that chronicled his hair-raising encounters with savage warriors, man-eating tigers, nomadic tribes, and elephant stampedes.

In addition to producing King Kong, he was the first to team Fred Astaire with Ginger Rogers, arranged Katharine Hepburn’s screen test, collaborated with John Ford on Hollywood’s greatest Westerns, and then changed the face of film forever with Cinerama, the original “virtual reality.” He returned to military service during World War II, serving with General Claire Chennault in China, flying missions into the heart of enemy territory.

With Peter Jackson's King Kong remake due in December, this boisterous, chest-thumping biography of film pioneer Cooper (1893–1973), producer-director of the original 1933 film, is certain to attract attention. Vaz (The Art of the Incredibles; etc.) captures the mythic magic of Cooper's cinematic creations, and Cooper himself emerges as an equally legendary character. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy, but left before graduating and joined the 1916 hunt for Pancho Villa. A 1921 newspaper article tallied his WWI experiences: "All Warsaw is at the feet of the American ace who was twice shot down from the clouds, twice endured the squalor of prison camps, twice was reported dead." Cooper and his partner Ernest Schoedsack traveled the world shooting documentaries, scoring a box-office hit with the Oscar-nominated Chang (1927) before moving on to dramatic filmmaking. After "human dynamo" Cooper took over as RKO studio chief, he joined the WWII Flying Tigers and received a U.S.A.F. brigadier general promotion. Launching Cinerama in 1952, he was awarded an honorary 1953 Oscar. An experienced writer on movie special effects and special-effects movies has put together a readable, frequently gripping biography of Merian C. Cooper (1893-1973), whose exploits sometimes put one in mind of Indiana Jones but who is best known as producer--director, with Ernest B. Schoedsack, of King Kong. Before that cinematic milestone, he had been a pilot in World War I and a POW in Germany. His career began with wildlife films that involved frequent journeys to remote regions and, occasionally, acute danger. Nor did he rest on his laurels after King Kong. He returned to flying in World War II, undertaking combat missions when nearly 50 years old as chief of staff of the Flying Tigers in China. After the war, he returned to Hollywood as a senior executive at RKO. The book offers abundant facts, adequate prose, a lavish selection of photographs, and remarks by a panoply of famous interviewees. An altogether appealing addition for film-history collections, even if Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson weren't about to release his own King Kong. Roland Green

A man's man.

For film buffs, this book is a must. Merian C. Cooper was an unbelievable "real life" character that no one has heard of. You couldn't make his life up. A World war One bomber pilot, who received 60 medals for valor, An Adventurer, who made African adventure films and documentaries. He was a founder of Pan American airways. As a director his first feature film was King Kong. A Studio Exec (RKO-MGM) who formed a partnership with Director John Ford and produced ALL of his best known westerns including the Searchers. In World War Two he re-enlisted in the Army Air Corps to become chief of Staff of Chinault's Flying Tigers and General MacArthur in the Phililpine campaign. Following the war he returned to film and the studio that made him. I can't recommend enough. This guy was the James Cameron of the 40's.

Heard of this on a Faith Middleton Book Review. Sounded good, so I bought it for my brother for Christmas. Of course I thumbed through it before wrapping it. What a Guy, that Merian C Cooper!

About the Author
C. Edward Sandifer received his AB from Dartmouth College 1973, and his MA, PhD, from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst 1975, 1980. He was Chair of the Northeastern Section of the MAA, 1998-2000, and Secretary of The Euler Society, 2002-present. He is also a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Mathematics, and the British Society for the History of Mathematics. He is one of the founding members of The Euler Society, and on the charter committee at the founding of the History of Mathematics Special Interest Group of the MAA (HoMSIGMAA). He has run 34 consecutive Boston Marathons and won the 1984 Northeastern (USA) Regional Marathon Championship.

Alan Cheuse Alan Cheuse has been reviewing books on All Things Considered since the 1980s.

Formally trained as a literary scholar, Alan also writes fiction and novels and publishes short stories. He is the author of three novels, two collections of short fiction, and the memoir Fall out of Heaven. With Caroline Marshall, he has edited two volumes of short stories. His most recent collection of his short fiction was published in September 1998 and his essay collection, Listening to the Page, appeared in 2001.

Alan splits his time between the two coasts, spending nine months of the year in Washington, D.C., where he teaches writing at George Mason University. His summers are spent in Santa Cruz, Calif. teaching writing at the Squaw Valley Community of Writers. Cheuse earned his Ph.D. in comparative literature with a focus on Latin American literature from Rutgers University in 1974.

"The greatest challenge of this work [at NPR]," he says, "is to make each two-minute review as fresh and interesting as you can while trying to focus on the essence of the book itself."

Nicholas Delbanco Nick Delbanco is the Robert Frost Distinguished University Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan, where he formerly directed the prestigious Hopwood Awards Program in creative writing and where the Delbanco Prize was established in his honor for students who need financial assistance to attend the Hopwood Program (only 25 students are admitted each year). He is also a co-founder (together with the late John Gardner) of the Bennington Writing Workshops

As the Delbanco Prize implies, Nick is a beloved teacher and through his teaching has been in the thick of the modern literary scene. His students have praised his enormous frame of literary reference, his eagerness to devour a new work, and his ability to home in on its weaknesses. Richard Tillinghast, a poet and colleague at Michigan, said of Nick, “When you have someone with an eye and ear like Nick's, you can really learn a lot about what talents you have and how to use them.”

Describing Nick’s teaching style, the New York Times said, “Mr. Delbanco delights in horrifying his students by urging them to imitate rather than innovate. He tells them that imitation is the surest route to originality and warns against self-expression, self-discovery.” His students also talk of his sociability (he loves a good story, to tell it and to hear it), his honesty, and his devotion to his students. One student said, “He gave me confidence when I had no confidence. He's also very blunt and honest. He has no problem tossing your manuscript back at you and saying, 'This stinks.' He would dismantle me and then take me into his office and tell me I could be a writer.”

Nick has won several awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, and two Writer’s Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. He is the author of twenty-four books of fiction and non-fiction, a frequent contributor to Harper’s, and often seen in the New York Times. Some have called him a “writer’s writer” --to which he replies “it's hard to see it as an insult at all. The worst you could say is that it's a kind way of saying nobody buys your books.” He has written a previous McGraw-Hill text, The Sincerest Form: Writing Fiction through Imitation. His most recent novel is The Count of Concord, a work of historical fiction that tells the tale of Count Rumford: inventor of the coffeepot, philosopher, and spy (among other things). The Chicago Sun says, “Novelist Nicholas Delbanco has done us a great service by rescuing Rumford from obscurity…In ‘The Count of Concord’ we see a veteran novelist working at the height of his powers.”

Worth the price for the anthology alone!

I bought this book for my Intro to Literature course, but I am keeping it for the sheer volume of reference material and anthologized works by amazing writers.

I actually really enjoy this book

I actually really enjoy this book. It is perhaps the first textbook I will consider keeping after my class is over.
A note- my intro to lit class for NICC heavily relies on this so it isn't a class you can skip buying the book for- the questions and terminology is specific and I imagine it isn't any different at other colleges. The older edition comes in three pieces and is different than this by quite a bit I believe, so you better stick with this edition and not try to save money.

At Last, an alternative to metaphysical cosmology!

I have been waiting for this book to be written for nearly 40 years. What philosophers and chatty mystics have been trying to model for thousands of years is now finally graspable in terms that readers can easily correlate to and corroborate with their activity as experiencers in the real world. Iain McGilchrist - part psychiatrist, brain scientist, philosopher - aptly points out how the two minds of the right-left brain can simultaneously respect and use properly those innate functions which enable a person to attend to the entirety of the experiential field while navigating its details. He offers data driven critiques of the overweening and corrosive emphasis that modern civilisation has been placing on the left-brain's ex post facto narratives while it short shrifts both the order and predominance of right-brain's initial apprehension of reality in the present moment. As a devoted practitioner of meditative practice, I have found it far easier to map the course of "The Way" on McGilchrist's neurophysiological terrain of consciousness, than upon the many archaic - albeit astoundingly useful - models of the old schools with all their magic dragons.

Excellent summary of divided brain research

This is basically a brief, summary version of the author's excellent longer book, The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World. The longer work is well-written, extremely interesting, goes into detail, and is definitely worth reading. But for those who want a shorter presentation of the results and implications of divided brain research -- how human beings have a left-brain and a right-brain, and how the difference (and sometimes conflict) between them accounts for many important aspects of our experience and culture, then this shorter work is very good. It covers all the main points of the longer work and is a genuine bargain. I would recommend this shorter work for all psychologists and philosophers, or anyone with a strong interest in either field. (And I would recommend the longer work also for people with a special interest in this important topic.)

Best short treatment of how left/right hemispheres make sense of the world by a psychiatrist-philosopher

Superb writing from a knowledgeable observer with years of clinical observations backing his conclusions. I've always had trouble with the some of the left-brain / right-brain distinctions, but McGilchrist makes a simplification that I can remember and believe in. He characterizes the left hemisphere as driven to come up with a consistent narrative about the world which brooks no ambiguity or uncertainty whereas the right hemisphere is fine with paradox, emotional shading and mystery. Profound insight into phenomenology with some implications for culture.

I want to give it a perfect rating but I can't

Make no mistake, this book is an excellent compendium to the Ghostbusters universe. It is a treasure trove of information. Initially, when I pre-ordered, I was under the assumption it would cover primarily the first movie. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have yet to sit down and read it (it's over 200 pages and hard bound) but here is what you can expect

1. Foreward by Dan Akroyd/Introduction by Ivan Reitman.
2. Complete overview of the original (original sketches/concept art of the baddies, storyboards, film shots you've never seen before, matte paintings, Ecto 1 illustrations., creature costumes and makeup, movie posters
3. Complete overview of the sequel (more of what you would expect in part except a lot more story book art and schematics).
3. Overview of the Real Ghostbusters, Extreme Ghostbusters, Ghostbuster Video Games, Ghostbuster Comics, Ghostbuster Merchandise

This is enough to make any hard core fan happy.

So what ruined this from being a 5 star rating from me: The extras.

Scattered throughout the book are film cells, business cards, sketches and artwork, storyboards, etc..

They are a welcome addition, but instead of including it in its own separate section, they are glued to the pages. The glue mostly comes off but it leaves an oily residue on the pages where it originally resided. I guess as a trade off you could not remove it, but then it's obstructing you from reading what's underneath it. I hope if they ever come out with a second printing they address is small nuisance to an otherwise perfect tabletop piece.

It has a wealth of content for fans

[[VIDEOID:bea8483745c9c32b12c177c54454f40]]Although I can't remember when was the first time I watched Ghostbusters as I was only three when the film came out. I must have caught one of those reruns. But I still remember that I was so fascinated by the film, the visuals and concept. I was also hooked on playing the Ghostbusters games when it came out on the SEGA system. The idea of ghosts running around and there are actually people who would go around catching these ghosts just seems wildly imaginative for me.

Going through this book brings back the sense of wonder and good memories of the first time I watched the films.

This 224-page hardcover is published by Insight Editions. The publisher has designed the book like a scrapbook with several removable items, such as the Ghostbuster name card, a questionnaire for those who watch the preview, booklet of storyboards, schematics of props, a transparent sheet with labels overlayed onto the slime blower tank prop, and other notes.

The removable items are a nice touch but they could have just been printed on the actual pages. They are sticked onto the pages and to read the content beneath you have to remove or push them away. Nice but not really necessary.

The book's divided into three parts, the first two parts cover the two films and the last part looks at the expanded universe.

There's a wealth of content in the form of lots of wonderful set photography, artworks and a detailed writeup into the making of the two films. It's a very satisfying read, especially when it comes to understanding how they actually create the ghosts, props and visual effects to make everything look believable. My favourite bits are for Slimer and Stay Puff marshmallow man who are my favourite characters. LOL. There are also lots of other ghosts featured, and the actors who have to wear the ghost suits.

The famous and iconic Ghostbusters car is also featured, of course. There's the original from the first film and the modified version in the second.

The last part for the expanded universe talks about the video games, toys, comics, animation and other merchandise. I don't follow Ghostbusters except for their films and that particular one game I played, so this section has a lot of things I'm seeing for the first time.

This really is a fantastic book for the fans.

An amazing book. The only thing missing seems to be a chapter on the Live Stage Show and Theme Park Presence from Universal Studios Florida. Otherwise, this book is a MUST HAVE for any Ghostbuster fan! I'll be ordered a second to leave in the shrink wrap, because I promise you I will wear the first copy out from pouring over it!

Absolutely Amazing

I absolutely, positively love the Mageri series by Dannika Dark. Part of me was super excited to read Shine and part of me was very sad because I knew it was the last book in the series. I actually read it very slowly over multiple days because I wanted to make it last. I know this will not be the last book about this world by Dannika, but I also feel like I am going to miss friends because she honestly makes these characters so real that I feel like I know them and Simon might drop by for game night one day. Dannika really out did herself with shine. She managed to tie up all the loose ends we needed tied up while still leaving things open for their future. I so want to tell you about all the amazing things that happened, but then this would be so full of spoilers you would probably be yelling at me through the screen. I will say my absolute favorite scene has to do with a rose, but that is all you are getting out of me. If you have read this series, go and grab this one. You will not be sorry. If you have not read it, you are in good luck because they are all complete so you can now start at book one and read them all the way through.

Great final installment... sad and sweet!

This is the last installment of my very favorite series (Mageri Series)… Can you imagine how emotional this made me? I was excited and a mess. I was a mess! I’m beyond grateful to learn that we will continue to see the Mageri world with new casts of characters. Yay. (Maybe some cameos ;))

From the beginning of the series there has been great character and plot growth. Something that I think sets Ms. Dark apart. Each book has been consistently entertaining and gut wrenching. So much develops in this book that it is hard to write about my favorite parts without posting spoilers, so as vaguely as possible….

*The amount of respect that Justus shows for Silver and her decisions is breathtaking. You know it had to be hard for him to watch and do nothing, but he wouldn’t shame her like that.

*Oh, Silver and Logan… awes

About the Author
Dr. Kurtz has been researching ultra-high molecular weight polyehtylene(UHMWPE) for use in orthopedics for over 10 years. He has published dozens of papers and several book chapters related to UHMWPE used in joint replacement. He has pioneered the development of new test methods for the material in orthopedics. Dr. Kurtz has authored national and international standards for medical upgrade UHMWPE.

As a principle engineer at Exponent, an international engineering and scientific consulting company, his research on UHMWPE is supported by several major orthopedic manufacturers. He has funding from the National Institutes for Health to stdy UHMWPE changes after implanatation in the body, as well as to develop new computer-based tools to predict the performance of new UHMWPE materials.

Dr. Kurtz is the Director of an orthopedic implant retrieval program in Philadelphia which is affiliated with Drexel University and Thomas Jefferson University. He teaches classes on the performance of orthopedic polymers (including UHMWPE) at Drexel, Temple, and Princeton Universities.
