Welcome to the world of the fabulously wealthy in London, 1909, where dresses and houses are overwhelmingly opulent, social class means everything, and women are taught to be nothing more than wives and mothers. Into this world comes 17-year-old Victoria Darling, who wants only to be an artist - a nearly impossible dream for a girl.
After Vicky poses nude for her illicit art class, she is expelled from her French finishing school. Shamed and scandalized, her parents try to marry her off to the wealthy Edmund Carrick-Humphrey. But Vicky has other things on her mind: her clandestine application to the Royal College of Art; her participation in the suffragette movement; and her growing attraction to a working-class boy who may be her muse - or may be the love of her life. As the world of debutante balls, corsets, and high-society obligations closes in around her, Vicky must figure out: Just how much is she willing to sacrifice to pursue her dreams?

YA Historical Fiction With Purpose
By Lisa from Read.Breathe.Relax.
Unlike almost all young adult historical fiction books I’ve read, A Mad, Wicked Folly does not remove the very limiting and unromantic aspects of women and their available futures in the early 1900s. Don’t get me wrong, this is a very romantic book with a love triangle for crying out loud, but it doesn’t shirk the very real and scary nature of women’s rights during that time.
I love books like Cinders and Sapphires, but it almost makes me feel sad about them now. I definitely enjoyed them so much, but seeing what options were available to women back in the day, it unromanticizes the fact that forced marriage was often the easiest and most comfortable choice.
Although this reality is more bleak than the “oh which beau will I try on today” scenes in many historical fiction books, A Mad, Wicked Folly still knew how to bring the action. Things did not go how I imagined they might during the book, but I think the author kept the events of the book upbeat and historically faithful.
In fact, one of my favorite parts of the book was the addendum at the back that listed some of the actual events that inspired the book’s happenings. Some were only changes slightly, while others had more liberty taken.
I was impressed with all the research and knowledge Waller included. It really added a great deal of depth an insight into a time I really didn’t know much about (not in England, at least).
Can I just say how much I HATED Vicky’s parents. Simply the worst set of parents I’ve ever heard described in a book. The worst part is their opinion of their daughter seems like the norm for that time. They could have been anyone’s parents. Yuck.
The only thing I had wished there had been more of was the supposed parties and balls that Vicky is supposed to attend. She is described in several situations as being at a gathering, but it’s without the usual frilly descriptions of the food and decor that I normally enjoy.
I understand why they were omitted, but I was hoping for them, thinking this book was similar to other historical type settings during this time period.
OVERALL:
This book is perfect for a strong dose of history, women’s rights and romance. Although you may feel conflicted about which one you want the most while reading, this standalone YA fiction will not disappoint. The very strong heroine and the rich historical details really set A Mad, Wicked Folly apart from the rest.

A Fun, Relatable Lead Character
By book beach bunny
I enjoyed this one and read it pretty quickly. Victoria Darling just wants to go to art school. In Paris she poses nude for an artists group that she's not even supposed to be in and promptly gets herself kicked back to London and an engagement that her obnoxious parents see fit to put her back on the right track. Meanwhile Vicky trying to get together the things she needs to get into college winds up working with the suffragettes and meeting a wonderful copper called Will and just generally having a coming of age story.
This book worked for me because well, in a lot of ways I related to Vicky. Yes, she does come off as a spoiled child who gets herself into plenty of trouble and she's very lucky with the people she meets but that was the time period and the way she was raised. She jumps to conclusions and kind of keeps the truth from Will because she simply can't bear to tell him. I thought she was very realistic as was all the women supporting characters and even her back and forth brother who kind of tries to help but really doesn't. Her father and would be father-in-law were so horrible I wanted to throw my Kindle against the wall. It's sadly true that I don't know a great deal about the time period so I appreciated the immersive writing and the book also includes little tidbits of information in the back.
My only small issue would be considering the time period I found Will just a bit to unbelievable. Like Prince Charming fell from a tree kind of unbelievable. Otherwise the book was a great read and I'd recommend it.

Refreshing and Exciting
By Morgan M.
4.5 stars. A Mad Wicked Folly was wonderful in so many ways. It was so refreshing to read a book set in the early 20th century that wasn't connected to either World War. Instead, it's a war for women's rights. The Women's Suffrage movement is a period I don't know much about, and I was happy to be educated in such an informed and entertaining way. It's still hard to believe this all took place a mere hundred years ago! The social rules and mores are as strict as the 19th century, and as infuriating. The way some of the male characters talked about and to female characters was rage inducing. Knowing that it was simply their viewpoint back then doesn't make it much better- it's just hard to wrap my head around the lack of respect for a woman's opinion. It was pretty cute when Vicky's father finally asked her for help using the newfangled telephone though :)
Vicky was the perfect character to relate to- she admires the WSPU, she wants to be involved, but she's still afraid of rocking the boat and how it will affect her. It was a treat to watch Vicky grow and stretch her wings. I also loved the focus on art and how passionate and resilient it made Vicky. This is an interesting novel- it has serious subject matter in the foreground but it also has beautiful dresses, balls, and a very adorable love interest! It's the perfect mix of fluff and substance. I took of half a star because I can't stand when characters string each other along and withhold vital information- it's so irritating! But this was such a pleasure to read and I would highly recommend it to fans of historical fiction, strong heroines, and British history!
