About the Author
C. Radhakrishnan is one of the most reputed living writers of Malayalam. A scientist-turned writer, he has contributed to all branches of creative literature, mostly fiction, besides popular science. He is widely read and well recognized. He was given the Kerala Sahitya Akademi’s Annual Award for the Best Book Published in Malayalam during the year 1962 at the young age of 23, a record that stays. And the latest feather in his cap is the Murtidevi Award of the Bharatiya Gnanapith Trust for the best creative work in Indian languages. His works, deceptively simple and eminently readable, have been assessed to be creative contributions to the science-philosophy dialogue. He has done a commentary on Bhagavat Gita (Geetha Darshanam) critically approaching yogavidya in the light of modern science and, at he same time, also evaluating modern science vis-à-vis yogavidya. He helped launch and establish Science Toady (Times of India), the first popular science magazine of India, at a young age of 24, and later held senior positions with national print media organs. He is a filmmaker too – two of his four creations form part of the Indian Panorama of Feature Films. His forays into astrophysics have enabled him to suggest a fresh physical model for the universe. Poetry need not be lost in translation.
By Dr M.V.Pillai
C.Radhakrishnan's Malayalam novel " Munpe Parakkunna Pakshikal ( Birds that fly ahead ) when first published a quarter century ago, was praised as an inimitable constructional tour de force that maintained the twin qualities of a classic : universality and timelessness of its central theme. In today's politically turbulent world ,the novel attains renewed significance when many among the young and the restless resort to overt and covert wars at flash points of conflagration in this planet .Their goals may be ideological ,political or religious, but their commitment to the cause is absolute, dedication rock solid ,and conviction that end will justify the means, frightening to the civilized world.
It is the all time relevance and global dimension of this core subject that makes this novel an amazing mirror of contemporary times .The unique style of narration often erasing the separation between the genres of prose and poetry and creating prose poem provides the readers a feast of powerful imageries , symbols and motifs bewildering and ecstatic at the same time. The translator who skillfully transformed the original Malayalam novel to its fine English translation is at her best while preserving the prose poems and often challenging Robert Frost's famous lines " Poetry is what gets lost in translation..." In a unique experience of enjoying the English translation closely on the heels of my second reading of the original Malayalam novel , I was amazed at the everlasting value of creative works of excellence when well preserved through scholarly translations brimming with artistic charm...Yes..the old Latin tag is correct : Litera scripta manet...the written word remains ...and it remains with brilliance and poise in any language with the magic of human talent...

First Among Equals – A review of the novel ‘Birds That Fly Ahead’
By MWB Review
“Everybody is a book of blood; wherever we're opened, we're red.” - Clive Barker
Author C. Radhakrishnan’s novel ‘Birds That Fly Ahead’ is another book in a series centered around a lead protagonist chronicling the class struggle led by a left leaning extremist movement that mowed through India decades ago and the remnants of which can still be seen today in various trickles and forms. Arjun is a revolutionary, the state has charged him with various cases of murder and heists. But what is the truth? Did he commit all those murders as they claim? Can the murders and violence he perpetrated ever be justified? And if he’s not to blame, then who should be held accountable? These are some of the questions we seek answers to in this epic novel saddling both philosophical and political reverberations with ease.
The change in the mood of the narrative shifts dramatically with changes in the story, like a three act play you will see your own mood shift from end to the other while progressing through the set-up, the confrontation and eventual resolution. There’s also some wonderful dialogue writing in the book and this back and forth between characters is captivating to listen to. Some may call it a tad superficial, sure but when you are creating this magical narrative on paper, such illusions will have a bit of artificiality to them. But it will still leave you mesmerized and in awe of the language and the beauty of thoughts expressed. The best thing about Kairali Narayanan’s translation is that she has been able to absorb and present in entirety the earthy beauty of the author’s prose from Malayalam word for word.
Arjun is a byproduct of his circumstances and fate, he grows up quickly than his peers, his evolution speeded up as necessitated by the need to find a solution and escape from the life handed down to him. There’s an interesting array of secondary characters that provide stability and wholeness to the story. The author himself appears as the narrator/journalist who becomes the ears and mouth of the reader, hearing what Arjun has to say and asking him whatever’s on our mind. The three Urmilas’ along with Anuradha reveal the strength and complexity of womanhood and the echelon of love these species are capable of. The editor, the professor and the tribal headman form the trifecta of patriarchal wisdom and knowledge, their philosophical diatribes also reveal the writer’s mind and his attitude towards life. Their disclosures are as good any that you find in the eastern or western school of philosophy.
Though not discriminatory, the book’s narrative might be able to weave its magic among only a section of the audience even after it’s rebirth in the English language. Because Birds That Fly Ahead isn’t just a simple novel dealing with a sole emotion, it’s an epic book with mighty ambitions that makes you think hard and deep about life and one which succeeds in portraying hard hitting and raw emotions.

An Amazingly Creative Work
By Thampil Pankaj, Ph.D
This amazingly creative work which holds you in suspense from start to finish while also engaging you intellectually is a book that truly belongs to the category of "world class" litrature! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it in this English translation , almost as much as I enjoyed reading the original book in Malayalam some years ago.
MR. C. Radhakrishnan is a well-known writer in India who has won many regional and national awards for his novels and other writings, whose writing style is unique and most engaging, and his themes very enduring . But he is not much known outside India as his books, originally written in the regional Indian language Malayalam, have not been available in English. That gap is now being filled: at least two of his books have recently been translated into English, and " Birds That Fly Ahead ' is the third title available now. This is a valuable additon to world literature, and I hope more of his books will come out in English soon, so that readers all over the workd can enjoy his unique outstanding writings .
The Birds That Fly Ahead is about a group of young people who try to change the socio-economic and environmental order in their country and in the world at large through a social revolution, initially through violence, and later through more peaceful means . Their campaign is to stop exploiting Earth’s Natural resources and environmental balance for the advantage of a few , and to the loss for others in this and future generations. The story unfolds the whole drama about the life and struggles of these pioneers who have to live in hiding due to the forces against change, and due to the intitial violence the movement resorted to. There is intense conflict and suspense that engulfs their personal lives, with those who favor and strongly oppose their campaign for change, and CR's masterly writing weaves you into it and keeps you in a trance as you “ live through“ this book.
I agree with the book's blurb: This is a modern Indian classic, the work of a master craftsman , different in style, rich in content, revealing and invigorating!
It is a surprising concidence that the social philosphy which the revolutionaries in this book ( written about 30 years ago) tried to promote was very much like the recent message in Pope Francis's Encyclical on Environment , minus the violence!
