I like this book
By ProfDPitt
I like this book. It was one of Kim's earlier books and is a romance. Enjoyed the setting (rural Michigan) and the characters. This is not as intense as Kim's later books, but it provided a good evening of reading by the fireside. I especially liked that Gable and Erin were more mature characters that I could better relate to. Definitely recommend for a nice read.Earl Grey and Baby Boy were a nice touch for us cat lovers too!

It's ok, but could be better
By G. Tansey
The author has undeniable skill in writing; she captures the reader at once and carries the story along very smoothly. The plot is believable, the dialogue is readable, and the characters are alive.

The problem: this is a basic 1980's Naiad girl-meets-girl. There's nothing wrong with having such a plot, particularly for those who are just coming out. The rest of us, who have already read many books of this type, hunger for something else.

This was a pleasant hour or two spent reading the book; it won't be staying in my library, though. I've donated this to the general lesbian community, for someone younger to appreciate. I hope author will write something else, and I'll be keeping her name on my "to buy" list.

Love Shall Overcome
By K. Johnson
Kim Baldwin is one of the truly consistent faces of lesbian literature. `Force of Nature,' one of her earlier books, was good for this reader even the second time through. I first enjoyed this story on the Internet in 2005. It was very enjoyable, so I bought the hardcopy when it was released. (Note - It obviously, and unfortunately, sat on my `to be read' shelf until recently.)

Take the oft-told story of two women. The first, firefighter Gable McCoy, has always known she's a lesbian but isn't out in the small mountain town she calls home. The second, schoolteacher Erin Richards, just hasn't figured it out yet. Erin meets Gable when the firefighter helps her through a natural disaster while waiting to be rescued. They feel an immediate connection, but are separated without exchanging contact information. When Erin seemingly disappears, Gable almost gives up on ever seeing Erin again. However, when Erin surprisingly shows up as the new rookie at the firehouse Gable regains the spring in her step.

Having strong feelings for the educator she learns to call friend, Gable finally musters the courage to tell Erin she's a lesbian. Erin, who has half-heartedly dated one of the male firefighters, accepts Gable's confession in stride. However, an inner turmoil starts for Erin as she struggles to reconcile Gable's news with her growing feelings for her friend.

Okay... I know this is pretty much a standard formula story. But Baldwin is such a skillful storyteller that this one doesn't feel like standard fare. Gable is so awkward that she's easy to love. Erin is so open-minded and willing to accept even herself, that she's a real gem.

Bottom line - On the surface, it sounds basic, but this one is clever and touching. Give it a shot, you'll be glad you did.
