Great tuturial on how to write great software.

This book was reccomended to me by a freind. Initially, I was not thrilled. After all, I didnt know Pascal, and didn't care to learn Pascal. Pascal to me is a langauge only used by some academics and those stuck in the mainframe world.
I write in C, C++, Java, Perl. What relevance could Pascal have?
Boy was I wrong. It really isn't a book about Pascal, it's a book about writing good software. Pascal is immaterial to the reader. It is just a langauge that is being used to illustrate good software design.
I did most of the examples in Perl or C, and learned a good deal about good design and good coding.
The programs are a bit simple, but unlike other books the examples really build on each other and seem like useful programs. Unike the typical toy java program, that you see in books.
I would reccomend this to anyone who is starting out in programming and would like solid principles to start with.

Better than the Ratfor version

An excellent exposition of building useful tools for whatever operating system. I was able to build the tools easily, as is, on Linux with Free Pascal, with only a few modifications to the example primitives.

Kernighan does an excellent job sticking with the Pascal standard, and only using extensions when needed for I/O and command line arguments (buried in useful primitives). Standard Pascal has not changed since this book was written, (and most of Kernighan's criticisms of standard Pascal are still valid).

This book is so much better than the Ratfor version. Pascal is such a simpler, more elegant language than PL/I and Fortran. Fortran has changed so significantly than the Fortran used in the original Software Tools, that there's no longer a need for Ratfor. In fact, I found the Ratfor tools easier to write in modern Fortran given the explanations in Software Tools in Pascal than the native explanations in Software Tools.

Software Tools in Pascal is missing the subset Ratfor preprocessor, and the one-time-pad crypt utility, (which were in the Ratfor version). However, Ratfor is no longer needed (for Fortran or Pascal). As for the Ratfor crypt utility, it is useless on Windows, and even on Unix far better examples of cryptographic tools can be found in other texts for whatever platform.

However, as a criticism, the text is laced with C-like primitives that in many cases were not needed, and made the programs more complicated. It also is very Unix centric in some of the assumptions of the tool designs. Though the include program and macro processor provided useful additions to a strict standard Pascal, they were also sometimes the wrong approach in retrospect.

If new to Pascal, this book is actually a good starting point. Kernighan leaves nothing unexplained, has excellent bibliographic references at the end of each chapter, and introduces the Pascal syntax and data types within the text as needed. The overstrike command is an antique (see the POSIX asa utility, which makes a better design for the exercises), but most of the tools are still useful on modern systems.

The purpose of this book is to teach how to build a portable toolset. It succeeds, and provides an entertaining, informative, and detailed read. Pascal was a good choice to replace Ratfor, and the book's timelessness shows. Pascal's shortcomings are easily resolved with, and the tools easily translated to, Modula-2 if a more modern language is desired.

Excellent book, using it to learn software engineering

I had this book in my programming library and with some spare time I am implementing each program example from the text in Visual Basic 2010 console based applications, meant to use input output redirection and piping from the command line. There are mild problems with the program examples which are related to the authors using only UNIX systems for writing the programs in Pascal, like a CR is defined as 10 not 13, and is only one character, whereas in Windows a new line is a two character combination of a CR/LF. A new version of getc had to be written to deal with this, so even the very first example program to copy a file from standard input to standard output was flawed as it was written. However, in the last few days, I am finding I am able to learn a lot from the code in the book. It is easy to translate the structured control flow statements from the nonstandard Pascal used in the book to Visual Basic 2010, if you have a good VB textbook handy. The programs are meant to be run from the command line, so you have to know how to use Accessories to get to the command prompt in Windows. The chapters in the book cover simple programs like file copying, counting programs and getting rid of tabs or putting tabs in, then filter programs like a compare, compress, expand and translit program, followed by a files chapter with programs to include, concat, copy using file arguments and a powerful archive program. The next chapters deal with mainly one program per chapter, sorting, finding patterns in text, replacing patterns in text, a console based line editor and a simple formatter that can be expanded by adding additional commands. Using software metrics I have found that the programs are decomposed into routines of an average length of 66 words or 17 lines each and each routine takes me about 28 minutes to type in and test. I haven't found the program code on the Internet, despite it being on the Internet in the past. My main Pascal compiler on my computer is not compatible with the code in this book, especially in the file input and output routines. The choice of a string representation as an array of integers, starting at an index of 1 pervades the whole text, and using a different representation of strings makes writing the programs too difficult. I could translate all the Pascal control flow statements into VB except sets using "in" in Pascal. This I simulated with a boolean expression in an if then statement. The different stages of program design, development and testing are discussed about each program, not in specific chapters solely on design, testing or top-down design, however by implementing each program you learn quite a bit about these subjects from experience. I heartily recommend the book, rating it 5 out of 5.

Anyone intrigued by the history, methodology and results of the research done in the quest for the historical Jesus should read Powell's study. In his opening chapter, Powell notes that interest in the historical Jesus began in the 1700s due to Reimarus's volume that declared Jesus to be a messiah only in a worldly, political sense. He then explains how later scholars have influenced the search for the historical Jesus. The heart of the book lies in Powell's "snapshots" of Jesus, a sampling of the diverse portraits of the historical Jesus and of the scholars who are engaged in contemporary research, including: Jesus as social prophet (Richard A. Horsley); Jesus as charismatic Jew (Geza Vermes); Jesus as magician (Morton Smith); Jesus as Jewish sage (Ben Witherington III); and Jesus as cynic philosopher (F. Gerald Downing). He then presents what he regards as the six key players in the current quest for the historical Jesus?the participants in the Jesus Seminar, John Dominic Crossan, Marcus J. Borg, E.P. Sanders, John P. Meier and N.T. Wright?and offers critiques of their methods and findings. Powell concludes that the goal of our search for the historical Jesus should be "the Jesus of a story, a story of which history is but a part, sometimes a shadow."

Clear, scholarly, meaningful, and even devotional!

I couldn't get enough of this book. Powell is a wonderful writer, and he introduces us to the perspectives of Historical Jesus scholars of the last two centuries with absolute clarity and just the right details. I just had a lot of fun reading on the different scholarly views on who that ancient man of sorrows was. Powell seemingly has no axe to grind, seems completely competent to plough the terrain, and makes the whole trip worth it with the last two pages of the book....After this huge deluge of information about what Jesus did or did not say; after all of the guessing concerning Jesus message; after probing why Jesus has remained so controversial after 2000 years, Powell offers a tantalizing scenario concerning the very first Christian words ever penned on the last two pages (his only personal reflections in the book). I had to wipe the tears from my eyes after that.
This book is a 5 all the way. You won't be disappointed regardless of your view of who Jesus was (or is).

who do historians say that I am?

Who was Jesus of Nazareth? Today, few scholars doubt that Jesus actually existed, that he was a real historical figure. But exactly who or what was he? A raving madman? A prophet? A self-proclaimed Messiah? Or...?

This book, written by Mark Allan Powell (who is incidentally a Lutheran) doesn't give an answer to the question "who was Jesus". Rather, it describes the views of various scholars on the matter. Inevitably, there are many different views on Jesus within the scholarly community.

Powell begins by giving a short historical background. He describes how scholars during the 18th and 19th centuries attempted to cast Jesus in a "naturalist" mold. His miracles were really natural occurances, misunderstood by the superstitious disciples. The "kingdom of God" preached by Jesus was an earthly, political entity, not something supernatural and divine. And so on. The eschatological, apocalyptic and messianic elements of the Gospels were rejected as later ideas, and Jesus was transformed into a figure acceptable to 19th century agnostics or atheists. During the first half of the 20th century, Albert Schweitzer decisively challenged these ideas, "rediscovering" the eschatological ideas of Jesus, placing him once again in a firm 1st century Palestinian context. However, Schweitzer also believed that Jesus had failed in his mission, and that 20th century Christians must adopt an ultra-liberal, Social Gospel stance.

The main bulk of the book is devoted to contemporary scholars and their views of the historical Jesus. Powell does a good job in describing the various positions, the criticism levelled against them, and the often tricky methodological issues involved. For instance, how do we know which parts of the Gospels give the most trustworthy historical information about Jesus? How should apocryphal texts like "the Gospel of Thomas" be evaluated? What about the Talmud? Etc.

A particularly tricky criterion is the one called Dissimilarity. If a statement purported to be by Jesus is very different from 1st century Jewish conceptions, while also being potentially embarrasing to the early Church, it's usually deemed authentic. However, the Dissimilarity criterion gets problematic if taken to far. If the historical Jesus was neither "Jewish" nor "Christian", its difficult to explain why he recruited Jewish disciples who eventually founded the Christian Church! Dissimilarity risk turning Jesus into an inexplicable anomaly. In reality, there must have been at least some continuity between John the Baptist, Jesus and Paul. Why else would Jesus become a follower of John? And why else would Paul claim to act in Jesus name? Powell also points out another very common problem: those who attempt to reconstruct the "real" ideas of Jesus often end up with a Jesus whose ideas are similiar to their own! Leftist radicals end up with a leftist radical Jesus, Catholics with a Catholic Jesus, vegeterians with a vegetarian Jesus... Indeed, one of the things that made Schweitzer so remarkable was precisely that he came up with a Jesus he couldn't agree with.

The scholarly opinions described by Powell include those of John Dominic Crossan, Marcus J. Borg, E.P. Sanders, John P. Meier and N.T. Wright. Crossan and Borg are members of the Jesus Seminar and represent the "liberal" part of the spectrum, with Crossan speculating that Jesus was a kind of Cynic antinomian philosopher, more Hellenistic than Jewish, indeed, something of a 1st century hippie. By contrast, N.T. Wright openly defends the Biblical position, claiming that Jesus might very well have believed himself to be the God of Israel in the flesh. Of course, it's difficult to escape the suspiscion that Crossan is a hippie of sorts himself, while Wright is, of course, the bishop of Durham!

As already noted, the author of "Jesus as a figure in history" never answers that Question of Questions Jesus put to his disciples: "Who do you say that I am?". But at least, he has made it possible for the rest of us to contemplate the scholarly responses.

a clear explanation of a difficult and complex subject

Dr. Powell is head of the Historical Jesus section of the SBL. He not only is a New Testament scholar in his own right, he is also a respected colleague and friend of the Jesus Scholars he discusses. He not only has read their works, but he understands their positions from the inside.
In my experience, the study of the Historical Jesus is sometimes characterized by rhetoric, special pleading, and an unfruitful "us" vs. "them" attitude. While Powell is forthright about his own views when this is appropriate, he comes across as
surprisingly objective as he discusses the pros and cons of each position. This is aided by the fact that the Jesus scholars often disagree with each other - so he can just say "Wright would take issue with that", or "Crossan responds to this view
in this way."
Powell's writing style is refreshingly informal at times, and he obviously strives for clarity over the "scholar-speak" so often encountered. At the same time, he is obviously familiar with the technical concepts and not only throws the jargon around
but often explains it.
The book shows unusual restraint - Powell gives the reader room to formulate his/her own conclusions, while providing insight into both the issues and the scholars themselves.
I understand that this book is used in college courses as an introduction to the subject, and I can see why.
_Jesus As a Figure in History_ is a rare contribution: a clear explanation of a difficult and complex subject. I give it a 5.

No English in this book at all (just so you know); if you are planning to teach yourself, this may not be the best book for that

Very good book- since it's "immersion" that means there is absolutely NO English in here, whatsoever.... Which can make it tricky (if you're not in a class- perhaps impossible); but HEY when I look words up elsewhere, I remember them better, so maybe that's intentional. The example conversations on the CD are SO fast it is IMPOSSIBLE for a beginner to follow-- I think they did this so that we can get used to 'normal' conversation speed and different accents... however, as a person very new to Spanish, even in my third class and finishing up this book, it is still much too fast for me to understand. I can only understand 1 out of 20 words. I appreciate the desire to have us listen to current and contemporary conversation, but does EVERY conversation have to be 100 mph? Perhaps don't give your conversationalists espresso right before recording them! :) The only way I can find out what they're saying (they are also using words/phrases that aren't in our book, too, which our teacher then explains to us) is by reading the transcript from the teacher's book. Perhaps in the next version you can have every other conversation be fast if that's important to you, but please let some be relaxed- not boring, but not on speed, either. In normal English conversations people sometimes speak slowly and thoughtfully, and in a relaxed manner-- if this ever happens in Hispanic countries, please record conversations at this speed to represent those conversations as well as the fast ones.

It is also a story of the powerful families and their shaikhs who have had to lead their countries so rapidly into the modern world, all the while preserving their own socio-political traditions.

Dr Rosemarie Said Zahlan is a leading authority on the Gulf who has pioneered the development and understanding of the subject. She has written the first account of the Dubai Reform Movement (1970), the first comprehensive history of the United Arab Emirates, The Origins of the United Arab Emirates (1978) and the first history of Qatar, The Creation of Qatar (1969 and 1986), and a number of other works. Her forthcoming book, The Gulf States in the Twentieth Century: Isolation or Centre Stage?, will add considerably to our understanding of the history and politics of the Gulf States throughout the twentieth century.

A dry and uncritical introduction

Zahlan covers the history of the Gulf states with special emphasis on the history of the various monarchical families. Sadly, her attitude is unflinchingly fawning; she seems afraid to say one negative thing about these countries and their economic and political challenges. As well, the writing style is very dry and wooden. Her bias is symbolized by one of the maps showing the UAE as extending westward all the way to Dawhat as Salwa, at the southwest base of Qatar. This reflects absurdly ambitious territorial claims of the UAE at a time when the Saudis have claimed the coast in the vicinity of Khawr Duwayhin, southeast of Qatar. This map is emblematic of the book's flaws. A much better book despite its age (1980) is 'Arabia, the Gulf, & the West' by J.B. Kelly.

The Best Introduction Available

This is the best introduction available on the Gulf states, examining such critical themes as the British imperial legacy and the relationship between state, economy, and social classes. It certainly offers a non-Orientalist treatment and avoids the condescending and often bigoted discourse adopted by such colonial-minded writers as J.B. Kelly. The late Said-Zahlan had a full mastery of the British archives and extensive knowledge of the region. This is reflected in this valuable and concise introductory work.

Easy and neutral

I purchased this book for a graduate course on the Arab gulf states. It was used as an introductory book to read. I enjoined it because it was an easy read. However I was a little bit frustrated because I felt the author was trying too hard to remain objective on certain subjects like colonialism and rentierism, etc. This seemed to cause the author to gloss over certain subjects. Where rather than being objective she could have provided a bit more detail from one angle to help understand the region.

This is the most accurate book on the tabs for these songs that i have found so far... i cant really think of any bad things to put down on this product so if ur into tabs and metallica then get this book. But be sure to get the more expensive one. the cheaper one doesnt have the feature with the cut in holes and binded up spine so that it may just open and stay there without u having to push the page out or put something on it to stop the page from turning. its quite annoying when ur trying to play the tabs and the page keeps turning.

About the Author
Naomi Okamoto was born near Tokyo, Japan in 1951 and is a Member of the Federal Association of Artists (BBK). She studied painting, calligraphy, aesthetics, history of art and literature in Tokyo and moved to Germany in 1976. Naomi has studied under famous Japanese and Chinese masters of ink painting and works in various techniques from both the West and the East. She has exhibited in Tokyo, Kyoto, Westerland/Sylt, Hamburg, Dortmund, Bonn, Cologne, Mannheim, Saarbrücken, Stuttgart, Munich and Münster, and she teaches numerous courses in Germany, ink painting in Germany and the USA, and also under the pseudonym of Emi Akamatsu.

Incredible depth.

Compared to the walter foster series ones, this is simply a cut above and a fabulous source of inspiration and detailed instruction too. I like that lots of the illustrations show the work in progress, and give you directional arrows too.

Darlene Dawn, now retired from the corporate world of real estate association management, enjoys writing, music, and spending time with friends and family. She lives in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, with her husband and their Jack Russell terrier mix. They both have adult children from previous marriages who have blessed them with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Darlene Dawn is a pen name.

Belief, Unity and Love -- A How-to-Guide

The Inner Connection: A Spiritual Journey of Self-Discovery and Emotional Freedom, One Day at a Time is one part 12-steps, one part a Course in Miracles, and one part miscellaneous metaphysics (think “channeling,” for instance). The book functions as a how-to-guide for seeing the world from a new perspective: no more victims/victimizers, no more separation between humans and God, no more need to cling tight to our (often vain) attempts at control. A foundational premise of the book is that we can change our perspective (shifting from negative to positive) and change our interaction with the world.

Books of this nature can either be intriguing or go wildly off the rails into what feels like metaphysical absurdity. I have to admit, this one was intriguing. I got sober in a 12-step program, so some of the colloquialisms and pithy points-of-view on life were familiar; they worked for me, so I felt like the author and I were starting from common ground. Maybe that’s why it was relatively easy for me to follow her into completely unfamiliar spiritual terrain. Some of the aspects of the book made me raise an eyebrow; I am not sure where they fall in my system of beliefs. But the author seemed well aware that this skepticism would occur in some of her readers; she even encouraged being skeptical yet staying open to the possibility. I never felt like she was trying to sell me something. I just felt like she wanted to share a transcending peace that she has uncovered, one she believes is accessible to all.

I do wish the author had included more concrete, personal narrative examples of the way the principles in the book work in her life and in the lives of people she has encountered. There were some anecdotes in the book, but I didn’t find them particularly compelling. A strong narrative woven throughout would have made the book that much more engaging. And, while the reader will always know where the author obtained the sources she uses in the book, the way the source references are cited in the text disrupted the flow of the writing. I found myself trying to manifest footnotes about halfway through the book. (No luck on that one)

The workbook-type questions included at the end of each chapter give the reader a way to put the spiritual principles discussed into practice. I found myself thinking about some of the questions, and using some of the spiritual tools, throughout the day. I wanted to discuss this book with my partner. In fact, I may even read it again. It has a lot to offer.

Inner Connection

In The Inner Connection, the author shares her own story with addiction and her recovery. Her recovery was aided by the twelve step program, and she was greatly affected and helped by growing and strengthening her spiritual condition. She writes to show what steps and avenues helped her, and to inspire the same pursuit in spiritual growth in others going through similar circumstances. She took her own unique path, including using spiritual contacts, and has found a far deeper understanding of herself and her belief and approach to life.

I liked how the author was both offering information on what helped her on her path to recovery and becoming a stronger more spiritual person, but also remains positive and encouraging to the reader throughout the book. She freely admits that what she has done and found strength in may not work for everyone, and in her honesty and encouragement I think her message is all the more helpful and meaningful. She helps provide a wonderful frame of mind and thoughtful advice that I think all readers can use to help be more mindful and emotionally healthy.

Connect to your inner self

The Inner Connection was a very inspiring book as it follows one woman who is figuring out her “Higher Power” and how it can affect how she views herself. This book is like a self-help inspirational book that is good for anyone trying to give themselves a more positive outlook on life. If one has a more positive outlook on life then we are more likely to avoid addictive behaviors. Then if one is wrapped up in something addictive and dangerous the book gives insight on how to turn this into something productive and constructive, kind of like turning lemons into lemonade. The book could follow the “short and sweet” principle as many of the ideas expressed do not need a long explanation or description. I liked that this book came from someone who actually experienced these issues and is not a psychologist type wanting to “fix” someone. It gives the story that much more meaning to readers because they see that addiction can be overcome. I would recommend this book particularly for those struggling with any sort of addiction.
