The night that changes everything …
Life for Victoria Lacey should be perfect. And it is—perfectly boring. Agree to marry a lord who has yet to inspire a single, solitary tingle? Why, of course. Smile as though this is not the thousandth time he’s mentioned hounds and hunting? It’s all in a day’s work for the oh-so-proper sister of the Duke of Blackmore. Surely no one would suspect her secret longing for heart-racing, head-spinning passion. Except, perhaps, a dark stranger … on a terrace … at a ball where she should definitely not be kissing a man she has only just met.
The obsession that leads to ruin …
Hatred, not love, drives Lucien Wyatt, Viscount Atherbourne, to tempt the “Flower of Blackmore” into sin. Her brother has done unthinkable damage to Lucien’s family, and he intends to exact revenge in the only way left to him: Ruining his enemy’s sister, then stealing her from Blackmore by making her his own.
The woman who will set fire to her husband’s heart
As Lucien carries out his ruthless plan, tutoring his new bride in the finer points of pleasure, her surrender leaves him breathless … and soon a new obsession awakens—a scandalous fascination with his irresistible wife.

Formulaic but Enjoyable
By Joelle
No surprises here, and the plot comes straight from "Recency Romance 101". But the characters are likable, if predictable, and my only slight quarrel with the book stems from the often-used plot device of the wife whose physical urges betray her even when she is angry at her husband's churlish behavior. I think most married women will agree with me when I say that helpless rage toward one's spouse is a pretty good libido killer, even if said husband has smoldering eyes, broad shoulders, etc. But maybe that's just me... ;)

I finished it. That's the good news.

I managed to finish it though I had to skip some chunks of it to get through it. That's the good news. I can't remember the last time I disliked the main characters in a romance as much as I dislike these two. The only things they have in common are sex and being beautiful/handsome. The minute one of them puts on twenty pounds and gets a wrinkle or a gray hair it's over. There is absolutely no exploration of other elements of their lives that would explain the attraction. Lucien is a nasty man who is willing to continue using his wife to punish her brother for what he believes the brother did until he is proved wrong. At no point does he question his plan and the misery he causes Victoria before the brother is exonerated. He feels completely entitled to cause someone who has not harmed him a lifetime of misery as a weapon. Victoria is just about the most weak willed, shallow woman you can imagine. She is full of outrage and resentment and withdraws from Lucien - until he lays a hand on her, either hand anywhere on her body and she pretty much just lays down. Lucien's ultimate devotion is entirely dependent upon his not despising her brother anymore. If he gets angry at her relatives again I have no doubt he will do the same things to use her for revenge. The next book and the couple in it will be obvious a mile away and you don't have to get to the epilogue or the teaser for the next book to figure it out. SPOILER: Its going to be the sexy, powerful, aloof Duke and the glasses wearing, awkward book-worm-who-will-no-doubt-turn-into-a-butterfly. I mention this only to point out the complete lack of imagination in the writing and plot development. The writing itself is marginal. No character development, too much modern language and phraseology for the time period, some pretty tired devices to move the plot (blame most of his problems on Waterloo, the powerful social elite woman who fixes all the society problems, etc) just dumped in there when convenient to get the author out of a plot jam. Really, don't bother.

I want more from this author.
By Amazon Customer
Oh my, my, my. Could not put it down. Deep characters well drawn, complex plot that doesn't strain belief, beautiful writing and gripping dialogue between characters. An adult book and not in just the heat department. These characters are full grown and emotionally mature adults handling adult problems as adults would. I am so tired of the infantile writing and plots in many books I've bought and returned after the first chapter.
At first because of the heat level in the beginning, I thought this would be another of those books that has a skeletal plot and 2 dimensional characters on which to hang a lot of writing about sex. Nothing wrong with lots of sex, it's just that I need some substance with the froth. How wrong I was. I stuck with it as the writing was good - I love good writing of any kind.
I have waded through many so-so books for a while, trying new authors because my favorites, such as Grace Burrowes, Sherry Thomas and Meredith Duran are not putting them out as fast as I can read them. So it's been a dry spell until this one. I hope this is not a a one-time thing.
I anxiously await her next in this series, or anything else she publishes.
