Really an informative book. The book covers briefly the history of the coffee bean and uses. Then the book covers the science of coffee and concluding with the variations of making coffee. This book would be good for the beginner to the experienced coffee expert.

Well written, incredibly informative

I cannot say enough good things about this book. If you are a coffee connoisseur (or pretend to be), this book with give you more knowledge about the bean than anything I have ever read. The illustrations are fantastic, the information is great, and it caused me to consume 10 CUPS IN A MATTER OF MINUTES. Caffeine not included.

This book is a surprisingly short read, but informative ...

This book is a surprisingly short read, but informative. The information contained within seems accurate and is generally helpful to a beginning coffee enthusiast. That said, I found it frustrating how poorly the figures translated into the Kindle version. It appears that many of them don't show up at all, as in the last section of the book it jumps from Figure 1 to 4, then 7, 8, etc. Not all the figures are needed to understand a brewing method but it seems a glaring omission.

Best Modiano book I've read so far.

This is my favorite Patrick Modiano book so far. I would write this in French, but I'm afraid I may not be up to that yet. I am about 20 pages from the end but decided to go ahead and write it now. I will finish the book. I've read a couple of other of his books before this one and to me the most interesting thing is how much it parallels with his novels though this one is about his life. I think it best to read at least a couple of his novels 1st. I've read Rue de boulevards obscures and Dora Bruder so far and listented to l'herbe de nuit (and will read it later). I really enjoy this author because I feel like I really get a feel for some things that are going on or went on with 1. refugees, 2. jewish French in WWII, 3. writers trying to make it. 4. French culture. One of my favorite authors. Some of his books (Dora Bruder) are pretty deeply moving (disturbing - that's a better word - in a good way as should be disturbed and wonder if one would do any better in similar circumstances in helping people in the holocaust). I can see why he won the nobel prize in literature. And they're all well written. Personally my writing style would be a little more direct and less nuanced, but that's just me. Maybe that's why I'm not a great writer. I guess I'm lucky if I can write my name. I really like the cover of this book, too. As does my wife.

Would recommend to everyone who feels adventurous

This book has a ton of data that a reader doesn't need to remember (like names of people, streets, etc.) but it works in creating a feel that the author as a child was living. Usually when I read books with excessive number of characters I feel overwhelmed and loose the track of who's who, which can lead to my lost of interest. This book, however, creates a unique feeling while you're reading it because of the way it is written, and as long as you don't get hung up on remembering the characters it is very enjoyable. Its style is as hectic as the childhood of the author was. I felt that it was a rewarding read. Would recommend to everyone who feels adventurous.

C'était le deuxième livre de Modiano que je lisais. J'avais bien aimé "Rue des boutiques obscures". Je n'ai pas du tout aimé "Un pédigrée". Il est écrit comme un catalogue d'évènements: grandes vacances, changements de pensionnats etc, décrits très brièvement. Il est difficile de s'intéresser à l'histoire.

Arvin's portrait of Melville snagged a National Book Award (NBA) in 1950 and is still a leading title on the sailor turned author. Germaine de Stael vigorously opposed Napoleon and had affairs with the leading intellectuals of her day, all of which are marvelously detailed in Herold's 1958 volume, which also won an NBA. Though not a prize winner, Turnbull's portrait of the short, unhappy life of Scott Fitzgerald was the leading biography of its time (1962) before being bested by Matthew Bruccoli's Some Sort of Epic Grandeur in 1981. All of these volumes are worthy editions to public and academic library collections.

This biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald is now fifty years old, but it wears well and I could not ask for more in a biography. Andrew Turnbull set out to write a biography that focused on Fitzgerald's personality (as opposed to his literary works), and he succeeded admirably.

In preparation for this work Turnbull interviewed or corresponded with literally hundreds of people. (At the Plaza Hotel in New York he found only one person who remembered Fitzgerald - a bellboy.) Turnbull was aided, and no doubt inspired, by his own recollections of Fitzgerald. They met when he was eleven, Fitzgerald was thirty-six, and Fitzgerald rented an old Victorian house on the Turnbull family estate outside Baltimore. Fitzgerald and his daughter Scottie, joined for periods by Zelda (when she was not in a sanatorium in Baltimore), lived there for about two years, during which time Fitzgerald was quite accessible to and friendly with the Turnbull family.

Fitzgerald could be a showman and a show-off, and frequently he was a boor - especially when he was drunk (a state more common for him than for most people, even more common than for most writers). But the essential Fitzgerald was a Romantic and an archetypal Irishman, a combination that perhaps made the alcoholism inevitable. He was unusually magnanimous, both with his money and his time and attention. He was devoted to Zelda, even after she slipped the traces and drifted off into her own worlds of schizophrenia. He promoted and encouraged numerous other writers. And, of course, he was a brilliant writer himself. Among the tributes from Turnbull: "No one had written more gorgeously than he of America's last fling at adolescence. The gay chic of his style, with the wit and tenderness constantly breaking through, had suited a time whose very tawdriness, in a work like 'Gatsby', he had transformed into lasting beauty."

Turnbull pays due attention to Fitzgerald's relationships with other literary luminaries of the time, especially his friendships with Edmund Wilson and Ernest Hemingway. For a time Hemingway had no bigger fan than Fitzgerald, but Papa did not repay Scott in kind. Towards the end, Scott realized that Hemingway "is quite as nervously broken down as I am but it manifests itself in different ways. His inclination is towards megalomania and mine toward melancholy."

And, of course, much of the book deals with Scott and Zelda. "It was hard to say whether he or she was the leader in this chaos. They complemented each other like gin and vermouth in a martini, each making the other more powerful in their war with dullness and convention. * * * Both were unstable; when they should have called a halt, they egged each other on. They faced life not ignobly but with a mad sort of daring, committed to doing as they pleased and never counting the cost." They both flamed out, in different ways. The book includes a letter that Zelda wrote to Scott in 1936, during one of her lucid moments while at the Highland Mental Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina (where she died, eight years after Scott, in a fire in 1948). It is one of the most poignant letters I have ever encountered. As a beautiful, mystical, yet tragic love letter, it ranks with anything that Heloise wrote to Abelard. It alone is worth the price of the book.

SCOTT FITZGERALD is a sensitive, affectionate portrayal of one of America's quintessential writers. Plus, it is superbly written and very readable. Anyone looking for a "non-literary" biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald need look no further.

ADDENDUM (25 July 2012): I just finished reading "Hemingway Vs. Fitzgerald", by Scott Donaldson. It was written almost forty years after Turnbull's biography, with access to many letters and papers that were not available to Turnbull. In it, Scott Fitzgerald is somewhat shabbier and a little less noble than in Turnbull's biography, and the dreadful alcoholic that he became receives more attention. Also, in Donaldson's book Zelda Fitzgerald is zanier and less likeable than she is in Turnbull's. That said, I still recommend Turnbull's biography.

A Great Biography

Andrew Turnbull's well-written biography brings F. Scott Fitzgerald to life. While the book is well researched and organized, ultimately it is Turnbull's wonderful language that makes this book shine. He carefully and lyrically describes, not just people's physical characteristics, but also their personalities and personal energy. And Turnbull focuses his book's attention on his subjects' most lively and engaging interactions, quoting letters and discussions at length only when they are truly fascinating. Turnbull, who knew Fitzgerald personally and considered him a friend, obviously loved the subject of this book - and that love helped to bring its subject to life. It helps, of course, that Fitzgerald led a wild, legendary existence.

The best I can do, to give a sense of this book, I think, is to quote a few passages, half-randomly, directly from Turnbull's prose:

In describing Fitzgerald's school headmaster: "He was almost pure albino with thin flaxen hair, white eyebrows and lashes, and pink watery eyes that jiggled behind thick lenses. His soft bulk, his round face with a button nose surmounting several rolls of chin -anyone could see that Fay liked to eat" (Turnbull 1962, 39).

In describing Fitzgerald's final years: "Now was the time of hospitals, nurses, night sweats, sedatives, and despair. Fitzgerald seemed to be slipping back into the morass of 1935-6. Half-crazed with worry and isolation, he was also blocked in his work and 'a writer not writing,' he once remarked, 'is practically a maniac within himself'" (Turnbull 1962, 298).

In describing Zelda, Fitzgerald's wife: "Zelda, too, was acting strangely. With her angry sidelong glances and barbed remarks there was something crouching and inimical in her posture. She was a wily antagonist who lay in wait for you conversationally and gave compliments that turned out to be brickbats. 'Did you ever see a woman's face with so many fine, large teeth in it?' she might say of some one she didn't like - after which she would retreat into herself. But the Murphy's remained fond of her and she of them" (Turnbull 1962, 165-166) . . . "Her willfulness had modulated into a bizarre petishness. Out with a group of friends, she would suddenly want fresh strawberries or watercress sandwiches and make everyone thoroughly uncomfortable until she got them" (Turnbull 1962, 177).

I'm pretty sure I won't be putting some of them into ...

The full title of this book is "How to Build Self-Discipline, Resist Temptations and Reach Your Long-Term Goals." It is filled with interesting ideas. I'm pretty sure I won't be putting some of them into practice (like the suggestion to take ice-cold showers), but I do understand the concept behind them.

While not a step-by-step guide, the book does give advice on how to change behavior; either eliminating an unwanted behavior or making a desired behavior a habit. Much of the book focuses on neuroplasticity, although that word does not appear in the text. While Meadows aims to avoid technical details (to allow the reader to get the most out of the book in the shortest time possible), it does have a few technical references. For those interested in learning more, the book is also well annotated.

If you find your mind gets in the way of your achievement, this book may encourage you and help you get your mind out of your way. If you are serious about building self-discipline, resisting temptations and reaching your long-term goals, you may need to supplement this book with some additional reading.

He has done it and writes from his own experience

If you are contemplating reading this, you are likely to already have the mindset that is ready for change, or you are looking for a way to do better in your life. Martin will help you: he has done it. The biggest plus to this book is that Martin uses examples form his own life, together with a lot of research (that is referenced) to support the statements he is making. The book is easy to read, the concepts are easy to grasp, and putting things into practice is not difficult. I have read quite a few self-published books, and I have to say that this is one of the best written, which means that annoying errors don't distract from the content. Even if all you want to do is to make a relatively minor change in your life it will still be a useful and motivating book to read. I did not check the sources for his research, but a lot of it sounded familiar to me from other sites/articles I've read. At times I found Martin a bit extreme - he fasts for most of the 24 hour daily cycle, allowing himself only a small window of 4-6 hours in which to eat. However, he makes it very clear that this is something he chooses to do for his own purposes and he does not advocate that this is a must. I particularly like the fact that after each chapter there is a one page summary of the main points - I've seen this done in other books, and find it extremely helpful, and of course it's a well documented method for embedding information in the memory. Highly recommended.

Something that every goal-minded individual should read!

If one seeks to achieve things, they must set goals, have a strategy and a vision. Meadows' book clearly explains in a simple, easy-to-understand way exactly what it takes to maintain self-discipline. By using a combination of the science, psychology, and philosophy behind self-discipline, he shows how anyone can achieve it by following some of the techniques he recommends. One of the things he explains is how to meditate. While i have read about different types of meditations before, I really enjoyed the way he explained it in such a simple manner, and made it easy to understand how to do it. Meadows gives several excellent examples for building self-discipline, including diet and exercise. I can relate to both of these issues, as well as probably many people that are interested in reading this book, as I have struggled with both of these over the years. Meadows' explanation of the Dunning-Kruger effect was my personal favorite part of the entire book, as it reminds me of someone I know (read: ex-sister-in-law). Ironically, this book tied in perfectly with another book that I was also reading about fasting every other day (the Dodo diet), so the advice in this book made perfect sense. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever struggled with diet, exercise, money problems, or anyone who ever has a difficult time saying "no" to anyone or anything.

Okay Beginner Level Book

If you are relatively new to PhotoShop and are looking for a quick, relatively easy intro to B&W photo restoration, this isn't a bad little book. I wanted to love it, but I can't.

Pros: Deals with the basic tools and walks you through the process of using them to fix some problems. Easy to refer to the examples and apply to your scans. Short and easy to use. Inexpensive.
Cons: The printing is on uncoated paper so the example photos aren't always clear. The writing is sub par. No editing was done. The instructions were a little muddled in a couple of the examples. Doesn't address facial restoration if there is a lot of damage. One of his examples shows a family photo, with a big area of damage and he completely ignores how to repair that. Instead he focuses on blurring the background. It cries for information about how he repaired the faces and clothing of the damaged people, but he says not a word except that it will require a lot of work. (See photo of page from book.)

As a quick intro to see if you want to take on the task of repairing family heirlooms, this is a decent place to start. You won't be overwhelmed by all of the tools and choices PhotoShop provides. It's a painless beginning.

I recommend: Photo Restoration—From Snapshots to Great Shots by Robert Correll as the next step to increasing your skills.
Well written (even funny in places), easy to follow, addresses color as well as B&W. Yet not intimidating or overwhelming if you follow along the steps and examples of what he did to repair & improve the photos.

The Bible of photo restoration is: CTEIN's Digital Restoration From Start to Finish. Though it's getting a bit dated. It's an excellent advanced book.

Informative Introduction

This book helps explain a lot of the basics of how extrusion dies are optimized for superior cooling and flow performance. It gets into a good level of detail but is not written with too high a required knowledge going into the book. It is useful for any entry level engineer or tool designer in understanding more about the process. I purchased this as I work in the plastics industry and desired to get a more in depth mathematical understanding in order to solve some real extrusion problems, such as warping during cool.

The book starts with basics of material properties and how they interact with extrusion. It then goes into basic flow equations, not much more than you probably got in college, but then expands it to topics such as Melt Fracture. Then it goes into the CFD, or flow field, part when they talk about optimizing shape of the die to improve the velocity profile.

The meat of this book is in its discussion of various die designs for monoextrusion and coextrusion of thermoplastics and elastomers. There is then a short 10 page section on heating of the die.

The ending is on basics of calibration, operation, mechanical design, and maintaining of dies.

Wise and witty verse you'll return to again and again!

Joan van Poznak writes with youthful vigor and mischievous wit about the perils and pitfalls of old age. She also looks back on her youth with a rueful eye. The best test of poetry is: do you repeatedly make your loved ones stop what they are doing to listen to you read a passage aloud? Why isn't this lady more famous? Reading between the lines of her delightful verse, I think it's because she was too busy living life to the full as a performer, then wife and mother, to publish or market her verse. Well, as she herself writes, 80 isn't too old to be discovered!

These poems are a delight.

Always witty, often poignant, these poems are a tonic. The writer is brilliant with word-play: the poems are as much about the pleasures of language as the trials of ageing. Anyone who reads one will want to read all of these charming and heartfelt looks at life's journey.
